Does anyone have some kick-butt south indian (or north) recipes they'd like to share? :>

i don't know of any links, but go out and buy yourself madhur jaffrey's cookbook(s)! i find her recipes are simple, easy to follow, and she gives great suggestions for substitutions if you can't find the real ingredients and for toning up or down the spice level.

I know this is totally not authentic, but in a pinch (and for a non-cook like me), Trader Joe's makes some pretty good simmer sauces.  You just saute the meat and veg and then add the sauce.  I know we have the masala sauce and at least one more (maybe the green curry) in our fridge right now.  I realize that's not a real recipe, but for someone like me who can't cook, they're a cheaper alternative to Indian takeout. :)

I love Trader Joes.  Their frozen naan is ridiculously good. Thanks!

I got this cookbook for Christmas

    http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?r=1&ISBN=9780811853422&ourl=5-Spices-50-Dishes%2FRuta-Kahate&cm_mmc=yahoossp-_-plp-_-books2-_-5-Spices-50-Dishes-9780811853422

It's great and SUPER easy. I love that it's only 5 spices. Makes it easy to make stuff. The Railway Potatoes were SO good!

I've posted this on here before, but here it is again. I could go for some right now... it's my bff/MOH's mother's recipe for channa masala (chickpea curry). I got the channa masala packet of spice/curry at an Indian grocery store.

    1 medium onion

    2 tablespoons oil

    1/2 teaspoon cumin

    14.5 oz can diced tomatoes

    1 spoon tomato paste

    1/2 spoon salt

    1/2 teaspoon chili powder

    1/2 teaspoon coriander powder

    Can of garbanzo beans

1/2 and 1/4 teaspoon channa masala

    Lime juice

    Basmati rice

Saute onion, oil and cumin together over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes. Add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, 1/2 spoon of salt, chili powder and coriander powder. Cover and cook for 5 - 6 minutes. Meanwhile, wash and mince a handful of garbanzo beans. Add the minced beans, the rest of the garbanzo beans, 1/2 teaspoon of channa masala. Cover and sit for 10 minutes - stirring occasionally. Add salt to taste. Turn the heat off. Add 1/4 teaspoon of channa masala. Add some lime juice. Mix it all together. Serve with basmati rice.

MMM! Thanks!  I use a similar recipe for channa masala (or chhole) but because I hate measuring, I end up using MTR brand chhole seasoning along with sambhar powder.  Learned it from my favorite Tamil!  I'm going to use this one and see how it differs though! :)
