I would appreaciate any input peopl have regarding some independent ot independent artist that perform love songs for our first dance. We love metric, weezer, the raconteurs to name a few. All I can find is anti love songs. So, I am looking for some help.
It's not really indie, but it was different. We danced to Use Somebody by Kings of Leon and everyone thought that it was awesome. Which is kind of funny, because when I told people that we planned to dance to it, they wrinkled their nose.
You might like White Stripes: We're Going to be Friends. That new Weezer song is a love song too.....but it's a little fast for a slow dance.
I'm very Indie, but went with Nina Simone's "My baby just cares for me" for the first dance... We played Indie songs the rest of the night.
We're narrowing down some different songs. Our top picks are:
I'll Follow You Into the Dark- Death Cab for Cutie
The First Day of My Life- Bright Eyes
I'll Catch You- The Get-Up Kids
By the Way That They Dance- Jmp, Little Children
I also like "Ballad for my one true love" by Mason Jennings, but the lyrics of the chorus are kind of awkward, and "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel, but it has some awkward lyrics as well and may or may not be about the Holocaust... yikes.
I was recently at a wedding where they played "Do you realize" by the flaming lips. It was such a great first dance.
I'll Follow You Into the Dark was one of our top picks for the first dance, but whenever we played it for people who weren't familiar with the song, they totally got the message wrong and thought the whole song was just about dying....so we nixed it. You could always run the songs by people who don't know them, and gague their reactions.
"Do You Realize" is a great choice!
Also, anything by Band of Horses!!
Oh yes I second Band of Horses or anything from Bon Iver (Skinny Love). Also, check out Tegan and Sara, they have a bunch of good songs. And Jose Gonzalez's cover of "Heartbeats."
I wouldn't think of Band of Horses - when we first started dating, my fiance gave me a mix CD of his favorite songs and "The Funeral" by Band of Horses was on it. To this day, we still wonder why I continued to date him. How unromantic.
I think I'll either go to "I'll catch you" by the get up kids or a ben folds song
yes, sometimes it's hard to find alternative songs that aren't dark or vulgar for weddings!
We did Aqualung's Brighter Than Sunshine
In our ceremony we also had Old 97s & The Way I am by Ingrid Michaelson + some latin/jazz VSQ & some traditional wedding music, we are all for variety!
indie covers are also a great way to go. A few off the top of my head
M Ward "Let My Love Open the Door"
Katie Melua "Just Like Heaven"
Jem "Yellow"
Nouvelle Vogue "Melt With You"
A few more of my favorites
"Honey and the Moon" by Joseph Arthur
"Have a Little Faith in Me" by John Hiatt
"Loving You" by Paolo Nutini
our first dance is going to be "Bright Smile" by Josh Ritter.
@mouse - My FI and I's first song is "No One's Gonna Love You (More Than I Do)" by Band Of Horses.
But some other suggestions are: Pretty much anything by Sia, Cat Power's cover of "Sea of Love", Feist has a couple of good love songs, Kings of Convenience, Arcade Fire's "Crown of Love" is a good tune (it starts out slow, then you can boogie, good mix), Magnetic Fields does a cover of Peter Gabriel's "Book of Love." Ray LeMontagne (is he still considered indie?) he has a ton of love songs. Hope this helps!
A fellow Weezer fan! I always wanted "Only in Dreams" when I was younger, but it's like 7 minutes long lol. I like a lot of the songs the other bees listed, I think you'll have a lot to choose from!
blueshoes - "Only in Dreams" was the song that my FI wanted, but I had to say no because of it being so long. I'm already nervous about being the center of attention, I don't think I can handle 7 minutes of everyone watching my poor dancing skills. :)
Those that mentioned Band of Horses. Is No One's Going to Love You More Than I Do about staying together or breaking up? I love the song and the video (bro love!) but can't tell from the lyrics. Also the first line is a bit WTF for a wedding song.
If I knew how to dance, I would be all over Michael Franti & Spearhead's Say Hey.
It is amazing how sometimes you are having such difficulty thinking of something. Then you go on weddingbee and whats that...a message board with helpful posts! Such great timing!!!
No an Indie or Alternative band, but we're using Pearl Jam's "Just Breathe" for our first song. It has a really sweet, Indie-ish vibe to it, and Pearl Jam is FI's favorite band.
So they're not really indie, and only a little alternative, but the FI and I are both huge Coldplay fans. Our first dance will probably be "Yellow," but "Till Kingdom Come" is a great song that Johnny Cash originally wrote, and it's a hidden track on "X&Y." Also check out "Green Eyes," "One I Love," "Lovers in Japan," "Strawberry Swing."
Seconded for acoustic versions of "Everlong" and "Such Great Heights," two of my favorite songs.
As far as Weezer goes, it's not a slow song, but "My Best Friend" off their "Make Believe" album is SO adorable. Lyrical sample: "you're my best friend, and I love you, I love you, yes I do..."
A couple of Muse songs: "Invincible," and "I Belong to You."
Ingrid Michaelson's "The Way I Am," and my personal favorite "You and I."
"Chasing Cars" and "Crack the Shutters" by Snow Patrol
"Question," The Old 97s (my FI's roommate actually played this one for us and it brought tears to my eyes because he's such a not-sappy guy, but he knew it suited us so well)
"Stellar," Incubus... they have a handful of other sweet ones, too.
We're big fans of alternative music, so when I hear a sweet song, I definitely take note :)
@dollylava
I see what you are saying, but my FI and I take it as, even when times are tough, no one will love you more than I do. The part where he talks about "someone should have warned you," to me, means, that someone should have told you its not easy. And when he talks about "I never want to hear you say, that you'd be better off, or you like it that way," to me means that I don't want to hear you give up.
Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what it means to us.
And I can't believe I forgot this one: "Miracle," by the Foo Fighters. Amazing song, slow-dance-able, and I heart Dave Grohl.
We had to put Band of Horses aside due to lyrics. I still think The Funeral is one of the best songs ever... but we did use the Great Salt Lake in our cocktail hour music.
Well, I'm sorry the lyrics in mine and my FI's song don't really speak to everyone the same way, but it means something to us. And, its our first dance. I mean, when someone suggested Sigur Ros, no one made a big deal about the lyrics being Icelandic. The melodies are beautiful, and if someone wants to dance to it, they should be allowed to.
We were thinking about Cat Power's cover of "Sea of Love" for awhile, (I know someone mentioned it above...) but eventually decided that it was maybe a little too melancholy... and went with "Dearest" by Buddy Holly.
Here are some we were looking at:
Love it All - The Kooks (I love this song!)
Only You - Joshua Radin
You are the Best Thing - Ray LaMontagna
And I love Love and Some Verses by Iron and Wine and Gracie by Ben Folds but not for the first dance
I should add--I am walking in to an acoustic version (Iron and Wine) of Such Great Heights :)
Heh, I was discussing this topic with an indie-loving friend of mine, how there is hardly any happy-in-love music by indie bands. Really makes you realize what depressing stuff we're listening to most of the time!
A few gems I've culled:
Ben Folds, The Luckiest
Basia Bulat, Oh My Darling
Belle and Sebastian, Funny Little Frog
Blitzen Trapper, Furr
Calexico and Iron and Wine, Sixteen Maybe Less (Okay, I wouldn't do this for a first dance since it's about an old married man reminiscing about a teenage fling who is NOT his wife, but it's still very sweet)
David Bowie, Moonage Daydream (...what? Okay, maybe that's just FI and me :) )
Swell Season, Falling Slowly
Practically anything by Joshua Radin
The Little Ones, Morning Tide
Kevin Devine, Just Stay
Michael Franti, Say Hey (I Love You)
Old Crow Medicine Show, Wagon Wheel
Patty Griffin, Heavenly Day
Stars, Ageless Beauty
Van Morrison, Into the Mystic (also Crazy Love and These Dreams of You)
I think Such Great Heights would be really good for a first dance. Or Death Cab's Soul Meets Body. Or not sure if this is very indie but Adele's version of Just To Feel Your Love is beautiful. Good luck!
There are some amazing suggestions on here, so I won't repeat, but I don't think anyone mentioned Ben Fold's The Luckiest - that's a great one!
Yeah, honestly I made the decision early on to not care about lyrics at all when it came to our wedding music. I mean, really, the songs aren't about you so what does it matter? We chose songs based on mood, melody, and how they make us feel when we listen to them. We got no complaints about our selections. :)
this verges on pop............... but our song is hero/heroine by boys like girls............ so as cheesy as that is, we will probably dance to that
How about "That teenage feeling" by Neko Case, "Love and Some Verses" by Iron & Wine, "Love Like Laughter" by Beth Orton - although it's tough cuz the lyrics are more complex in most indie songs vs pop songs. I also love "ice cream" by Sarah McLachlan, although I don't think she qualifies as indie :) Let us know what you come up with!
I love this post. We are NOT Top 40 people at all so choosing the ceremony music has been a challenge! This will most likely change, but here is the current line-up for the Ceremony/Reception music (and you'll see it's full of some indie faves):
Processional (parents/grandparents): 'How Deep Is Your Love'- Bird and the Bee
Bridal Party: 'On Your Side'- Pete Yorn
Bride & Dad walk down the aisle: 'Honey and the Moon'- Joseph Arthur
Recessional: 'Walking On A Dream'- Empire of the Sun
First Dance: 'Fade Into You'- Mazzy Star
Cake Cutting- 'Ice Cream'- Sarah McLachlan
Last Dance- 'After Hours'- We Are Scientists
Yea, there are some holes to fill... but the music is being worked on as it's more important to us than even the friggin' photographer. :) Here are some other songs we may swap out with the ones above or somehow else incorporate into our day:
'M'- Chantal Kreviazuk
'Day Too Soon'- Sia
'Right There'- Alana Davis (fave musician of all time!!)
'Colors'- Amos Lee
'Right Next To You'- Elizabeth & The Catapault
'Grace'- Jeff Buckley
'Forever and Ever Amen'- 8mm
'Count On Me'- Lucy Schwartz
'Dream'- Priscilla Ahn
'Somersault'- Zero 7
'Little Heaven'- Toad The Wet Sprocket (hee... reminds me of my college years!)
There are actually MANY more to the list above. I commute to work so I have an hour drive in the morning and evening where all I do is listen to music and compile song lists/ideas in my head. So far, our music has been the one thing I'm stressing the most about. I just want to music and ceremony to be perfect!! Like what you see in the movies!! lol...
