My husband and I definitely wanted songs that most of our guests probably haven't heard before or at least haven't heard at a wedding. I also payed close attention because I wanted them to have some meaning for us. Our first dance was to Staind's "Tangled Up In You" off of their The Illusion of Progress album. I was cracking up after the wedding because my dad was asking me what our first dance was so he could download it. Two other songs/artists we thought about were "Your Guardian Angel" by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (but my sister said she thought about using that song if she ever got married so I didn't want to take that option away from her) and Ray LaMontagne.
For the cake cutting we used "Until You" by Dave Barnes. I had never heard of him before I started searching for songs for the wedding, but he has several I like. It was really hard for me to pick songs because a lot of the bands I listen to the most don't exactly have slower songs and if they do, they aren't about people finding someone they love and getting to be with that person. Good luck!
My FI and I are dancing to Aux Armes et Cetera by Serge Gainsboug. It's a reggae version of the French national anthem, sung in French of course. We were driving in the car one day listening to one of our Ipods, talking about our first dance, and there was a break between songs. He said "whatever the next song is that's our first dance." I agreed, thinking that we would hear some terrible hardcore song, and instead it was Aux Armes et Cetera...
Here are some other suggestions:
Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair covered by the Twilight Singers
A Love Supreme covered by The Twilight Singers
Joga by Bjork
All is full of Love by Bjork
Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs-it has a fast beat but it's sung slowly.
Un Baiser D'enfant by Kate Bush, just don't listen to the English version :)
It's not Indie but it is sort of alternative....'Night Swimming' by REM..
We walked in to an acoustic version of "In the Aeroplane" and we danced to Cat Power's "Sea of Love." It's a little melancholy, but it had a couple of things going for it: it's short (2 mins?) and we got married at the beach. A few people came up afterward and said what a great choice it was.
We danced to "With Whom to Dance?" by the Magnetic Fields. We got sooooooooo many compliments. And the brother of one of our guests is in the Magnetic Fields, so our wedding gift was a pair of tickets to an upcoming show. Score!
I love Band of Horses and we closed the night (i.e. our last dance song) was "I go to the barn because I like the..." That one also got a lot of compliments. We had to have it becuase we've danced around the kitchen for years to that one...Instant romance.
Some bands you may or may not know.
Ash - Shining Light http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZGcNx8nV8U
Blur - Tender http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNy0ZRLrtis
The Cure - Just like Heaven http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5StFADI9NM
The La's - There she goes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBZ4j0Rz-F0
The Proclaimers - I'm gonna be (500 Miles) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM0sTNtWDiI
I've struggled to find some that aren't about being broken hearted and I don't know if you'll have heard of Ash or Blur.
Other groups of interest: Oasis, The Fratellis, Muse, Snow Patrol, Stereophonics
I hope this helps in some way.
We're doing "By Your Side" by Sade. It was the only Sade song I knew when I met him and the only song he didn't know. I had loved it and when he heard it he loved it to.
We are having "September" from Earth Wind & Fire be out "introduction" song because when I first heard it, he introduced me into the world of real music, not just top hits, I said how much I liked it and asked if it could be "our song" and he said, "sure, as long as we can play it at our wedding". This was a few months in when we were still figuring eachother out. At that moment, a psuedo proposal, I knew I was going to marry him and it is one of the clearest memories I have to this day. That song brings me right back to that moment.
My friend had "I'll follow you into the dark" - Death Cab for her walking down the isle song and I cried and cried and cried.....it was beautiful.
For the rest we're doing a lot of Frank Sinatra stuff to appease our older guests and who doesn't like Frank?! You can't not dance to him!
It is so ridiculous how many songs I have looked through and searched for the first dance song. Here is what I have it narrowed down to:
Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats (The Knife Cover)
Nick Drake - Northern Sky
Cat Power - Sea of Love (Phil Phillips Cover)
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova - Falling Slowly
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Lay and Love
Department of Eagles - Love Me (Elvis Cover)
Ben Gibbard with Ben Barnett - Joga (Bjork Cover)
Sia - My Love
Ray Lamontagne - Hold You In My Arms
Van Morrison - I'll Be Your Lover Too
Mozella - Amazed
Iron & Wine - Such Great Heights (Postal Service Cover)
The Acorn - Lullaby (I think this is what we will do cause my fiancee likes this song the best)
"The way I am" By: Ingrid Michaelson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJOzdLwvTHA
"Cant help falling in Love with you" By: Ingrid Michaelson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4LlyhrLEuI
"Make you feel my Love" By: Adele http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fnn9JlqqTE4
"She likes me for me" By: Blessid Union of souls http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU5c7zhOmY0
"Better together" By: Jack Johnson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u57d4_b_YgI
My fiance and I are leaving toward "First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes. I'm still open to other suggestions though. Any other really good ones?
We'll be dancing to Baby I'm Yours by Artic Monkeys...AAAAhhh! Soo excited! It's an amazing cover!
We are going to dance to 311 "Love Song", we adore this song, FI picked it out. I guess you could call it alternative.
We danced to the Greenhornes "Hold Me." Has an old school 60s slow dance vibe.
We are using the Nataly Dawn cover of "Book of Love". It's great.
The rest of this is kinda all over the place:
Air - You Make it Easy
The Divine Comedy - Songs of Love
Portishead - Glory Box
Hum - Dreamboat
Belle and Sebastian - Waiting for the Moon to Rise
Mountain Goats - Going to Georgia
Tanya Donnelly - Days of Grace
Nevershine - Breathe
Screeching Weasel - Guest List
Catherine Wheel - Delicious
We're doing Wait, by K's Choice. I think they're considered alternative enough. :-) It's our first "our" song, and I really love it. :-)
I just have to say that I love all the great ideas in this post!
For our first dance we're either doing "The Weather"-Built to Spill or "Jesus, etc."-Wilco. "Such Great Heights"-Iron and Wine almost made the cut but was way too slow.
I'm pretty set having The Cure's Six Different Ways as our first dance song. But I also really really want the Talking Heads' This Must Be the Place. Both sweet songs :)
I love this song by Ry Cuming- Always Remember Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQSU5nn76hM
And by any chance if your having a winter wedding, I'm crazy about the Winter Song by Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson:

I have no idea what genre the Avett Brothers are (they have been called rock, folk etc) but we are thinking about using "Swept Away" (sentimental version).
