Just as the title says… FI is turning 30 next month and right now we are super broke…. I”m in school and living off of savings. FI just started a new job in January and is STILL awaiting his first paycheck. So needless to say, we have more debt than we’re worth and are just scraping by at this moment. I don’t mind spending $100 or so for him – I normally wouldn’t want to spend that much considering our finances, but he’ll only turn 30 once, and it’s a big birthday.
We live near the Toronto area, so if there’s suggestions of somewhere to go that could be fun? We are also planning to go to Ottawa and spend his birthday weekend with his older brother and go out for dinner and drinks with some of FI’s friends who live there.
I would really like to still do something special with/for him that is just from me, with me.
FI is super into helicopters, planes, anything with electronics etc. He loves hockey (although hardly ever gets to play anymore), outdoors stuff, etc. But he’s a bit of a prep – not the redneck type (although he would probably love to claim that he is) lol.
Any suggestions? I love DIY stuff, any suggestions are welcome – sweet, raunchy, outgoing, romantic… I’ll take whatever you’ve got!

@MrsPhilly: I have no suggestions for the area, but check out groupon!
You can find great deals, activities, experiences, dining etc for discounted prices and all in your area.
Any concerts in your area going on that he might like?
Maybe you could get him a new hover helicopter, the ones with the cameras on it? if he doesn’t already have one.
You could also get a lot of little presents he might like (you would be surprised what you find at the dollar store!) and goodies and hide them all over the place for the day. In his car, his lunch, on the bed in the morning etc. And maybe a bigger gift in the evening at a special dinner (whether out or home-cooked with candles lit)
SO is turning 30 this year too! AND its our anniversary that month – so I will be watching this thread for ideas!

@MrsPhilly: How about giving him 30 gifts? They wouldn’t need to be materialistic – there could be vouchers for a massage (by you), etc.
In terms of planes / helicoptors. Some airports have great decks to watch the planes. Maybe you could pack a nice picknick basket and go watch planes for two hours or whatever …

Ok so I think I’ve got it… Just waiting for one place to call me back.
We are travelling 6 hours to Ottawa to spend the weekend with FI’s brother and his fam.
We’ll start the day with a delish homey breakfast, then I’m going to take him into town for a 1hr hot stone massage (purchased on Groupon). Afterwards, we’ll meet up with BIL and SIL and maybe a couple friends at this huge indoor rock climbing center and spend a couple hours climbing boulders and climbing throughout their massive facility (another groupon find). FI used to talk often about wanting to try rock climbing.
Then, depending on time and how tired we are, maybe skating on the canal, or home to shower and chill for a bit.
Then we’re meeting up with FIL & his gf, and some of FI’s friends down town for dinner and drinks at a nice pub.
What do you think? Is it enough? Should I do more?
