Hi, I am the groom in an upcoming wedding in Houston (my family and I are from Pittsburgh, PA).  I've got a rather difficult situation, but not so difficult that someone won't be able to help!

My family has modest means and cannot afford anything fancy for the rehearsal dinner, but due to the size of the bride's family, the wedding is going to be quite large.  My fiance would like to invite all the out of town guests and bridal party, totalling about 120 people (estimated from a 200 person wedding). The dinner doesn't need to be fancy, but has to be good food.

Is there a place that we can fit this many people and still keep it under say $4,000?  I saw a similar topic, but many of the responses don't seem to accomodate this many people.

    In sum I need:

-A venue under $4,000 (including food, could do outdoor catering if someone has an idea for that)

    - That can accomodate 120 people.

    - And will be fun!

    Thanks so much!

I don't know the area, but I still wanted to recommend this.  You should look into Chinese banquet restaurants that serve family style.  They can customize a menu for you to be anywhere from $100-crazy expensive per table.  And they are typically use to large size weddings.  If you don't mind sharing the space and just having a portion of a restaurant, that's another way to cut down on cost.

Ohh.  And I forgot to mention.  The reception is going to be on the Rice University Campus, so somewhere near the University Place / Southside place areas would be great!

You might consider Guadalajara for Mexican food . . . on 59 near Kirby.  I'm not sure what the Armadillo Palace would charge.  Since it's lots of out of town people, I would suggest BBQ or Tex Mex (that's what I did--wanted something more regional).  If you had a venue (like a hall at the church), Tortuga does a great job of catering fajitas for a very reasonable price.

If you have a place outdoors, that would be the best.  If you need more specifics, pm me.

Zydeco's downtown or Treebeard's downtown (not that close, but not that far away either) might also be reasonable choices.

I am getting married in September 2011 and I am currently looking around for places to have the rehearsal dinner. I can not even imagine what you are going through trying to accomodate 120 people.

Well since you are coming to Houston you need to have you dinner at a mexican restaurant. I am leaning towards Los Cucos On Westheimer in the Galleria Area. They are doing a buffet for me and they are charging 12 per person. They have a private room that they can arrange tables in a circle or in different areas. It would be easy for you to move around and greet your guests. The price to book the room is only 100$ and is included in the balance for the food. Los Cusos originated in Katy TX and has very good food and variety... chicken, beef, pork, vegitarian dishes.

I also looked at the Cadillac Bar on I 10 in the heights. They are a bit more expensive; however you can customize your menu and create a menu of your own. Just bring it to the restaurant and the guests will pick from... let say... the 4 or 5 entrees you have included. I know its a lot to do, but it can be a fun project to do with your bride to be.

Check Urbanspoon/ houston tx and they will have all the restaurants in the are you are interested in.

Some restaurants in the Montrose/ River Oaks/ Rise University area are: Chuy's (fun an inexpensive. You MUST have the creamy jalapeno sauce with chips!!), Cafe Adobe, Ones a Meal (I'm Greek... so this is a great greek restaurant), El Patio (They have a fantastic patio and in October the weather is great. Try the Blue Margarita... only 1 will do the trick- everclear shot:) )

I can go on and on... but check out the things I mentioned above and good luck!!
