Have you tried second hand dress websites or even the WB classified section. You'll probably find a gorgeous dress close to your budget thats worth much more. Good luck with your search.
@Jenofdnile: Iw as in the same boat and found that I have really high taste. I got mine from David's Bridal. I learned a neat trick to ask for the out of season dresses. my dress was originally 1200.00 and I paid 340 with tax alterations were 120. Iw as really excited because it's a really nice dress but a cheap price. The orginal price was outrages but worth it!!!
If you are willing to drive a little, there is a store in O'Fallon IL called Bonnie's Formal Fashions, they sell new dresses, but they have a great bargain rack area, and they also sell pre-owned dresses on consignment. They actually have a list of their consignment dresses on their website.
You could go to Wedding Belles in Barrington. They have all sample dresses and previously worn dresses. Unfortunately, that means most of the sizes are 10 or 8, a few 12s. The people are really nice. Prices are varied depending on the original price of the gown, but you might be able to find something that works!
I actually ended up getting my dress at David's Bridal for $250, so I second the bee who suggested trying a DB shop, too!
Also - regular bridal shops may have some sample or discontinued dresses. I went to A'Lamour, also in Barrington, and they had a dress marked down from $1200 to $300!
There's a thrift store called "House of Hope" in Barrington. At the end of the bridal season (whenever that is), a bunch of bridal stores in the area donate their sample dresses (and get a big tax write-off). The House of Hope chops out the tags and sells each dress for $50. I got my dress there, and it looks like it's never been tried on! Also, all the proceeds to go the House of Hope charity, which benefits struggling families in the area.
Just call them ahead of time -- I know that they periodically clear out all the old dresses. My mom went a few weeks ago and they didn't have any dresses, but they will be getting more in the future. Call them and they can tell you when :) From what I could find online, here's their number: 847-756-4673

I am struggling with my budget, so I am hoping to save money on the dress. Can anyone recommend some places near Chicago or in the surrounding suburbs where I can find a really inexpensive dress? I am hoping to spend under 500 with alterations. I would like a nice dress but can't imagine paying more than that.
I was thinking about going to a consignment or resale shop? Dis anyone try on dresses at one of these types of places or buy a dress from one?
