You set the tone of the wedding through the invitations, if you want a more casual wedding use more casual invitations.  The rest will follow or they will call you and ask (which they will do no matter what, for the most part, LOL)

I’d put something on your website and then spread the fact that you want a more casual affair by word-of-mouth.

Please join us on August 11, 2012 at 3:00pm at _________, ON.

The Ceremony will take place outside to be followed by an evening of food, games, music, dancing, and laughter.

Guests are encouraged to dress creatively and comfortably. Please keep in mind that we are planning a fun filled outdoor ceremony. High heels and uncomfortable formal wear are not recommended.

if you want to put a dress code on your invites do so on the bottom corner. I know a lot of people don’t like dress codes but I figure that Will and Kate did, so I don’t see why anyone else shouldn’t!

Perhaps go for “summer chic” or “smart casual” or something more fun. I’ve mentioned before that I got an invite once that said “suits and sparkles”, maybe you could come up with your own.
