Hi ladies, I'm opening a bridal salon in Chesterton, IN this year. I'm trying to obtain some information on where girls purchase their dresses and accessories. For those of you that have already bought your dress and/or accessories and would willing to provide some info, the following would be very helpful - in addition to the poll question about how many miles you traveled.

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store?

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories?

    Thanks a lot!

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend? Have got bracelet and earrings from a jewellery store. But will be buying veil and shoes from there. Shoes cost £70/$109

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store? I was going to but I want a Dessy chiffon dress and it's not stocked in the shop my dress is from so will get it from a shop in my hometown (where we're getting married) or order it on-line, which a bee recommended me a website yesterday.

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories? Dress is £1225/$1900

The shop where my dress is from is about 5 miles away. I travelled 75 miles to my hometown to try on dresses and I was willing to travel more than 100 miles to get a lace dress (Enzoani Cambridge to be precise) before I realised lace didn't look WOW on me.

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?  I haven't gotten my accessories yet, but I doubt I will get them there b/c they are ridiculously expensive :(

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store?  Yes, because the ladies got 20% off the dress, plus 20% off mine!

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories? My dress was originally $1129 but got it for $967 total.  Not sure about accessories yet since I haven't bought them but hopefully no more than an add'l $100-150

1 - No because they did not the kind of jewelry I was looking for. Otherwise I probably would have.

2 - No we could not get the dress we wanted in the correct color so we had them custom made. The bridal store offered 10% for BM dresses and 20% for mom dress which made us really want to buy there.

3 - $1250 for the dress and they had a deal where if I paid in full they would cover the sales tax. I drove over 100 miles to go to this shop because they had a large selection.

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?  I don't have them all yet but I bought my shoes online and my sara gabriel hair flower on ebay for much cheaper. I will try on veils when I go for my first fitting (or maybe sooner) and then decide what to do with that. Also haven't decided on earrings but online seems to be a cheaper option. My bridal salon was very expensive with accessories

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store?  No I got mine from JCrew for $70 each - wayyy less than the $150-200 avg at the salon

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories? My dress was $850 and that includes all alterations. My shoes I think were $100 and the hair flower was $50. EDIT: I forgot that I also bought flats for the reception for $60

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?  I bought my veil at the same store but no other accessories (they were insane expensive for what they were).  I don't remember how much my veil was but it was quite plain and simple and one of their least expensive ones (but I only wanted plain and simple so it worked for me).

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store?  No - I really didn't like the bridal party dresses there.  I actually didn't get my bridal party dresses from any bridal store as I found that I could get the identical dresses online for WAY cheaper (even after bridal stores offered me discounts for buying all 6 at once, etc).

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories? My dress was around $700 (I think), shoes were $65 and $80 (I was a 2 shoe bride), jewelery that I didn't already own ran me about $300 (Macy's for all of it), hairpiece was about $20, I don't remember what my veil cost.

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?

No, I bought my dress in NYC (I'm in DC) because my 2 best friends live there and my mom could get a direct flight there easily (She's in San Fran).  I'm getting my accessories from Etsy.

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store?

No, I got custom bridesmaid dresses because I wanted a specific fabric (seersucker).

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories?

I spent approx $1000 on the dress and will spend no more than $75 on accessories.

My bridal store is about 10 miles from my house. We bought my dress, 7 bridesmaid dresses, and 1 junior bridesmaid dress there. We are also renting our tuxedos from them. I really liked that the more bridesmaids you had, the cheaper the dresses were, which really helped out my girls since I have a large bridal party.

I ended up finding shoes I loved at DSW before I even looked at the shoes in the store. I did look several times at veils and really wanted to buy one from them, but they are ridiculously expensive in bridal salons so I will probably be purchasing one online. I plan on wearing my own jewelry. Hope this helps somewhat!

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?

I bought my veil. The cost was $180 but the owner gave me a discount, so I only pay $120. I bought other accessories online like ebay and etsy, more choices (more unique design) and cheaper!!!

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store?

No because my BM lives far far far away. She buys the dress near where she lives.

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories?

    Dress: $1600 (not included alteration)

    Necklace: 100

    Earrings: $10

    Bracelet: $40

    Veil: $120

    Shoes: $10 (crazy blowout sale)

Since you are opening a bridal store, I just want to say according to my experience, I like:

-Stores with light and warm colour (dark really affects the mood of shopping)

-Don't ignore your customers and help them try the dresses on

-provide enough space for changing rooms

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?

I'm thinking that I will buy my veil from the boutique where I got my dress, but I will probably go to Nordstrom to get jewelry.  Ordered shoes from Zappos--I ordered 7 pairs to try on, and there's no tax and free shipping both ways so why not?

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store?

No, I'm getting my bridesmaids dresses from a store closer to my house.  I already knew the brand I wanted them to wear (enzoani, same as my dress) so I just found a local store that had it.  For my 2 bridesmaids who don't live near here, I found stores near them that carried the brand and they ordered locally.

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories?

Dress: $2500 (including alterations).  Shoes: $90.  Jewelry: hoping to spend less than $200.  Veil: No clue--the boutique said I can pick out a designer style and they'll make it for me, but I don't know what they charge.

First of all all of the prices are NYC prices

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?

So far no. I bought my shoes at another bridal salon however they were ~$600

The salon had very cute accessories though so my veil and maybe some jewelry will come from there.

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store?

No, the boutique I bought my dress at did not carry bridesmaids dresses.

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories?

    Dress - $4,900

    Alterations $600 (at designer's showroom)

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?

I haven't bought my jewelry or shoes yet.  I picked out my dress about 10 months before the wedding, and I had no clue at that time what accessories I would want.  I will probably end up borrowing some jewelry from family members. I got my veil new on Ebay.

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store?

Nope-They are picking out the dresses on their own.

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories?

Dress was about $740 (not including alterations). Veil was $18!

    1. Haven't bought the accessories yet, but I don't plan to get them at the bridal shop. Way to expensive, and not really the ones I'm looking for.

    2. Still working out the BM dress selection. We are considering dresses from the shop where I got my gown, because they can get a 20% discount. I'd still prefer it if we could just find them in a department store because even with the discount, a department store would probably be less expensive. However, the color I'm looking for is difficult to find in department stores.

    3. My dress was about $2000. Way more than I had originally planned to spend, but I really loved the dress. I still sometimes wish I'd gone for a less expensive one, though.

My dress was about 400 miles from my  house but it was near my hometown that I often go home to visit, so it wasn't out of the way in that regard.  I bought it during a trunk show so I got a tiny discount.

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?

Nope, the hair flowers I tried on there were really expensive (and the veils!), I will probably make my own or buy it somewhere else.

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store?

Not yet, I might.  I have awhile yet :)

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories?

So far I have only purchased the dress, it was about $880 (with tax and minus 10% off for a trunk show) and my shoes ($40ish?).

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?

No way. If I would have wanted a veil, I might have considered it, but $75 for a brooch and some feathers just wouldn't fly.

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store?

Yep! We almost didn't, but the discount cinched it for us. If they hadn't offered the discount because I bought my dress there, I wouldn't have.

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories?

    $1,500

I traveled 300 miles to find my dress. I live in an area where all I have to choose from is Davids Bridal. Since it was so far away, I did not buy my jewelry or bridesmaids dresses from the store. Nor did I do my alterations there.

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store? No, we bought ours from davids bridal only because we had a big bridal party and everyone lives in either different city or state

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories? my dress total was $1,300 not including alterations veil $140 and Headpeice $98

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store? I haven't gotten to this yet, we will definitely try dresses there but we may/may not end up purchasing.

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories? So far I've spent $800 on the dress. Alterations will be another $200, and then the veil is $100. Probably somewhere around the $1,100 mark.

1- No I got my bracelet, earrings and necklace from 3 different stores. Reason being I hate to be too matchy matchy and bridal store markup their jewelry too high so knowing that I purposely looked for jewelry at boutiques and TJ Maxx and other cute small shops that have a fine jewelry section.

2- No I bought BM dresses online

    3-Total about $2000

I traveled about 70 miles to get my dress!  I kinda live in the boonies so I had to travel quite a wasy to get to a boutique that had the designers I wanted! :)

1 - Did you buy your accessories at the same store as your dress, if so approximately how much did you spend?   Yes, I did.  I spent about $1,400 on necklace, bracelet, hair pins (for the reception,) cage veil and a custom flower fascinator (for the ceremony.) I am a sucker for accessories! :)

2 - Did you order your bridal party dresses from the same store? Yes, I did. She had the exact dresses that I wanted! They were $240 each, if I remember correctly.

3 - How much did you spend on your dress and/or accessories? My dress was about $3,800

She gave me 10% off of everything.

    Some advice...
For me the ambience played a role in where I decided to purchase my dress. I really like the intimate boutique feel with subtle lighting, antique decorations, and pretty painted walls. The owner was awesome too.  She was great at picking dresses that flattered me and bringing lots of accessories for me to try on! Plus, I didn't feel rushed at all. I think I was there for like 4 hours...haha!

I went to a couple of other stores where it was all fluorescent lighting, harsh white walls, and you were on display with a big row of mirrors for everyone to see you try on dresses.  It ruined the experience for me.  I felt really rushed at a couple of places as well...that's not a good feeling either.

    @Topolino:

Thanks for the suggestions, I agree. I've visited a number of salons pretending to be a bride to be, gathering information on what to do and not to do and was amazed at the number of bad salons out there. The nice ones really make you feel so much better when you walk in the door.
