I posted about this on my blog, but thought you ladies might also enjoy it.

I love this "money tree", "silver dollar tree", "lunaria" vase! I think it looks so cool and it would be a great addition to either our favor table or guestbook table. (Although I have yet to decide what will actually be on either of those tables).

Inspiration to Reality: FAIL: Tell me yours : wedding Terranea Wedding 08 So FI and I went to Michaels to see what we could find... and I found a great tall vase and 10 lunaria stems....I was feeling good that this EASY DIY project would take just a few minutes.....SO then I put it together and.......

Bummer!! So not as cool as I wanted! I'll have to buy more stems.....any tips on how to make if fluffier?

Any DIY projects that you tried and failed?

I would try a vase that's a little shorter and that has a wider opening.  You'll definitely need more branches, but I think it would have a fuller look.

I'll be posting about my DIY fail pretty soon. Don't feel bad!

I agree with kiddosc about the vase, but also, maybe you could put those things closer to the top. I noticed in your inspiration picture that you can't even see the stems at all... I bet they're in one of those floral ball cage things. Can you pick one up at Michaels and see if it works?

ok by no means am I a crafy DIY kind of person so feel free to tell me that my idea is crazy but here is what i suggest.

From the inspiration picture it looks like the stems are not all sticking straight up but are placed in the vase at different angles to achieve a fuller look.  I would get a vase with a slightly wider opening and place some sort of styrophom thingly at the top.  Get a lot more branches and cut the bottoms down and stick them in the styrophone at different angles.  you can then wrap the very top of the vase in a wide (white) ribbon or lace to cover the foam but it also shouldn't be very visible because of all the fluff.  I think the fact that all of yours stick up instead of out is the main problem.  Also other stores (especially wholesale places) are likely to sell fluffier branches.

@kidd: I think you are right about the vase, I need one that has a more sloping top. I'll probably just exchange it at Michaels.

@ oyster: That is a great idea! I was thinking about cutting them and wiring them together, but I like that idea much better!

I think if you had a few more, and had the stems rest more at the mouth of the vase they would be more blooming. Oyster had a great idea with the floral ball cage thing.

I think @Arachna is right on those branches in the original inpiration photo are curled for sure, look at the shape. Do your branches have a bend to them? can you soak them and reshape them like with curly willow? I don't know if that would mess up the leaves though.

The stems aren't wrapped wire? I would have thought you could have bent them somehow. The stems in the inspiration photo also look like they're from two different sources, some look white and some look brown, but that could also just be a trick of lighting. You definitely need a wider vase and a heck of a lot more stems too!

    Great ideas everyone!

The stems don't bend, they are plastic-y. I was thinking about adding wire to them to get them to bend. I think I'll try the floral ball thing and get a different vase. OH and buy way more stems. i thought this project was going to be cheap and easy and now it's turning into a whole different ball game. thanks for all the suggestions! They are exactly what I needed.

Maybe you could find brown floral wire (does that exist?) and wrap them like you suggested. That would be the easiest fix. Have you looked online to see if you can find ones with wire stems? Then you could just return those ones to Michaels.

I agree with those who say the ones you bought cannot be made to look like the ones in the picture. The stems are too short and too stiff. Good luck finding the right ones! It is a pretty look.
