Well, this article is not really about ultimatums. It's about talking about marriage. Which I think should happen one way or the other if one of you wants to head in that direction. You need to know if you are on the same page about things that you want, that are important to you. And not just marriage. Eventually, if you see yourself together long term, you will have to talk about whether you want children, how you want to live, how you handle finances, who is going to do the dishes, and many other things.
FI and I were on the same page early on that we wanted to get married some day. He was the one to initiate those talks. Between the first time he seriously said that someday we're getting married... and someday happening next spring, more than four years will have gone by.
