@MrsRuby: This seems pretty realistic to me. I never knew how expensive everything was until I started pricing it out. Holy Moly.

So glad I’m getting married in NJ. I mean who doesn’t love having the 4th most expensive state/area?

Things like this make me wonder what exactly is being included. Like, my wedding itself costs X amount, but if you add in the car we rented and hotel for the wedding night, the rehearsal dinner, and our rings, it’s a totally different story.

That’s not really representative of it though. Think about who that leaves out at the top of the scale and (predominantly) the bottom. It’s based on self-reporting through two wedding-focused sites. That means their only data is coming from brides who are interested enough in the wedding planning process to seek out the sites and register for them. Add on top of it that they have to care enough about the wedding process to feel the need to respond to a survey after the wedding is over.
It’s not that I don’t think brides don’t care about their weddings at all, but it’s just such a self-selected group. A bride with an unlimited budget and wedding planner from the very beginning probably isn’t trolling sites deeply enough to register & give enough information for them to follow up in a survey. A bride whose parents pay for everything might not know enough to be able to respond to the survey. And a couple who goes to the courthouse and then throws one hell of an afterparty may not be searching the two sites that host this survey.
Just something to think about.

@Keltaena: I know! I always wonder what people even here on wedding bee mean when they ask “what is your wedding budget”. Some people include rings, some don’t, some include honeymoon, others don’t. The list is endless!

As far as the wedding we are planning so far, I do want to point out that the big numbers including the venue (and ATM estimated) flowers, DJ, ceremony and photographer seem to line up with what I’ve found. I’m guesstimating our wedding will be 35-40 in northern NJ for about 175 people. The venue (which includes food, cake, linens, tables, chairs) is the bulk of that cost at 23-28k (depending on where we end up between the minimum of 165 and maximum of 200 people). We’re doing a very formal affair, but we chose the cheapest venue given all that it includes.
