Don't get too excited. Lots of parents have no idea how much weddings actually cost. If you really are interested in having them contribute, you should get a set dollar amount and plan off of that.
My parents want to help out more than they can financially afford. They would give me the moon and the stars if they could, but I know that financially speaking the FI and I will have to foot a large part of the bill. Thats okay with me... the most important part is that they are present.
@MamaHusky3: Your parents rock, yay for you!
@mcnetn3: You're right, my excitement from earlier has lessened greatly. I allowed myself to have some grand vision in my head that probably cost $20K (ummmm, way too much money for me & my parents), but realistically I know it's not possible. Even if I cut that in half, a huge part of me feels crazy for wanting to spend that much on one day. I'm so frugal it's not even funny. Knowing my dad, he's probably thinking a few thousand for a nice wedding, but I can't see that happening for some reason. All the little things add up, and I've never been good with sticking to a budget, lol.
@Whimsical.Sprite: Your parents sound like sweethearts! If we eloped, I would definitely want mine up there, too. At first I thought we'd go up there alone and then surprise everyone afterwards, but the more I think about it, my parents need to be involved.
@ChicChick: Thanks, girl! I know that my wedding will turn out beautiful no matter how big or small it is, and I'm just so happy that he finally asked me to be his wife. Yay!
That is exciting! The way I see it, any contribution is helpful, right? FI and I are paying the bulk of the wedding ourselves, but we have been happily surprised by certain "gifts" along the way. Since we weren't expecting them, we really appreciated them!
My mom paid for my dress ($1,200), shoes ($125) and offered Monday to pay for our catering. I was definitely not expecting that. FI's parents paid for the ceremony site rental too as a Christmas gift, so that was helpful!
That's awesome!! I love nice surprises!! I'll keep my fingers crossed. I'm sure what ever type of wedding you have it will beautiful!

My fiance and I have always thought we'd just elope up to the mountains in Gatlinburg, TN for a cheap but intimate ceremony. We're not exactly rolling in the dough, and I figured my dad & step-mom wouldn't be able to help financially either.
But after I called them to tell them about my Halloween engagement, my dad laughed and said, "Finally, one of our daughters is going to get married!" I have 2 younger step-sisters who don't seem interested in marriage at all. Then I joked around and asked if he'd pay for a wedding, and get this.........he said, "Maybe."
Wow. Just wow. Guess I need to sit down with my parents and re-evaluate my wedding plans. I'd love to have a real wedding with a reception and guests and great food and everything else, but I never thought it would be possible. Yay, I'm getting a little bit excited now, so everyone cross your fingers please!
