My fiance and I are not very well traveled and we’ve really never been on a vacation so planning our honeymoon is daunting.
I’ve always wanted a Disney Honeymoon! But my fiance pointed out that Disney is not very romantic and he’s probably right.
But I have a really hard time laying on a beach for a week straight. I think it would be boring and I would get restless. So places like Hawaii or the Bahamas don’t really appeal to me.
What do you guys think? Has anyone been on a “beachy” vacation that was very interesting and upbeat? Does anyone have any alternative ideas or suggestions? Our price range is about 5,000-7,000, airfare included. Anything lower would be highly, highly preferred, but we’re expecting a higher amount.

@lindseynicole: how far do you want to travel? how long do you have? if you have more than 2 weeks, i would suggest going to europe (london, paris, rome, spain).
if you only have a week, i would suggest going to the riviera maya. there are so many things to do; water sports (snorkling, scuba diving), culture and history (chichen itza, tulum), adventure parks, shopping, etc. also, there are many amazing all-inclusive resorts that have amazing beaches, services, food, etc.

Like mypinkshoes said, there are tons of activities you can do in many beach locations. I would recommend going to Cancun, Cozumel or Playa Del Carmen (Riviera Maya.)

I think it really just depends upon what your idea of interesting and upbeat is. Do you want outdoor adventure? Then Costa Rica may be a good fit. Picture perect scenery? What about the Greek Islands? Something a little closer to home? As the other posters stated, Mexico is a fantastic option.

Isn’t Mexico dangerous though?
Or does it just depend on where you stay?

@lindseynicole: You want to go to Disney Land, why not head over to France? You can stay there for a few days, but then also see Paris and perhaps drive around a little – it’s not that long a drive to get down to the Mediterranean! Plus, you can easily head over to surrounding countries. You can get tickets for the two of you for just over $2000, and the rest can be used for accommodation (check Air B&B) and fun stuff! So much better than spending 2 weeks on the beach, at least that’s my opinion. 🙂

Im a big fan of cruises and we’ll be taking a 7 day cruise for our honeymoon to Nassau, St Thomas, San Juan and Grand Turk for approx $1900, not inlcuding gas to drive to port/park. I like cruises because I can still get some beach time but have a TON of other things to do. I can’t lay on a beach for a week either so this was a perfect fit for us!

@lindseynicole: the resort areas are safe along the riviera maya. typically it’s the tourists looking for trouble that get into trouble (if you know what i mean). i have a house a few hours from there so i am there all of the time. i have never had an issue.
as any place you travel, be safe, stay alert and travel smart.

A few years ago I went on a mediterranean cruise (Venice Italy, Croatia, Greece) and it was spectacular because everytime you get off the boat, you’re in a new place. I think the ones in Europe that go to Ireland, London, and Scotland would be equally neat.
Otherwise, here are some of my favorite places I’ve ever been:
1 – Italy (Venice and Florence)
2 – Austria (Vienna and Salzburg)
3- South Africa (if you want to go on an epic safari, go to Arathusa Game Reserve south of Kruger national park. It’s “lion country” and we saw 16 in 3 days!)
4 – Kyoto, Japan
feel free to ping me for more. All of these places were way better than a beach vacation and have beautiful photography, great food, and interesting historic or adventure things to do.

@mypinkshoes: thisthisthis! In mexico you can do the beach thing, but also explore ancient ruins and jungles and stuff.
Also it’s not beachy but Kyoto is super romantic and there’s a ton of exciting stuff to do. (Had proposal vacation there.)

I also have traveled a lot and can’t just lay around so we did Hawaii for our honeymoon, and either Riviera Maya or Belize for our 1 year anniversary, which is also because we are big scuba divers. My dream travels that also have both relaxing and adventuring elements are the Virgin Islands, a cruise, Greek Islands, Croatian coast, Thailand, and an African safari.

I would recommend Thailand, Croatia and New Zealand! All places that are beautiful and you could relax on the beach but also a lot of other stuff to do. Let me know if you want any recommendations on what to do there.
