Bredenbecks, and Night Kitchen make some really cool stuff. In the Chestnut Hill section of the city. They were both on one of those cake shows, and I go to them regularly for other baked goods. Will probably go with Night Kitchen for mine.
We are using the Night Kitchen for our wedding. Ours is a fairly standard round, three-layer cake, but they have pictures of many other interestingly-shaped cakes (including books, Google the Night Kitchen and check the children's birthday cakes album under Specialty Cakes)
My best friend is a pastry chef and has AMAZING skill at making unique cakes/designs. http://www.dianemichellecakes.com/gallery.html#
She can do ANYTHING with fondant. I don't think she would have trouble with a stack of books! (In fact, I have a feeling that my shower cake will involve something like that - being a librarian and all!) She is right outside of Philly, I only know of one other bakery near Philly that does specialty cakes, and they may have closed.
I have seen a few things that I found great with this baker:
Karolyn's Kakes, LLC
Try her, she has some good stuff.
I vouch for LibraryBride's recommendation - she is making my cake, and though it isn't super complicated, her cakes TASTE absolutely delcious! And I have seen her really nice fondant cakes and they are great :)

Hey Philly bees. I'm curious if any of you know Philadelphia-area bakers who are capable of making interestingly-shaped cakes - that is, not just the multi-tiered cake with a design. Specifically we would like a cake shaped and decorated like a stack of books - probably involving fondant - and all the bakers I've had recommended to me so far don't seem able to do work like that. Do you know anybody who can?
