Has anyone here had experience with intermittent fasting? I know it’s supposed to help signficantly with fat loss.
There are a few styles of intermittent fasting: feast/fast, 24 hr, Warrior, 16/8 (leangains), all which work, but are done slightly differently. I think I am going to be trying LeanGains, as it seems to fit in nicely with my lifestyle, and many people seem to like this format.
Have you tried IF? Did you like or dislike it? If you haven’t, would you like to try orlike the idea?

This seems dangerous to me. I know if I skip food for too long I faint, especially if I throw in exercising. I’m hypoglycemic though.

I’m going to keep an eye on this topic because I am also interested in the answers. I’ve read that some doctors swear by it, but others think it’s ineffective or even dangerous. I’m thinking about trying it, but I’d love to see the feedback (positive or negative) from bees who’ve done it.

I think you’ll find that ‘some doctors’ swear by ANYTHING out there.
I do not see how this would be beneficial. Just eat clean, manage portions, and exercise.

I did Leangains for awhile, lost weight, gained muscle. But, I also stopped doing it and continued to lose weight and gain muscle. So I’m under the impression that I can lose weight not doing that.

I’ve done leangains almost my whole life. I very rarely eat breakfast (even as a child I didn’t), so I don’t eat my first meal until about 12:30, and I’m usually done eating for the day around 8:30/9. I didn’t know this had a name until I met with a nutrionist about a year ago. She said that as long as I’m meeting my daily calorie requirements and like eating on that schedule, then to stick with it. (She did say that she doesn’t like the other styles of IF though.) I’m just never hungry before lunch time. There are so many people who told me I should eat 5-6 small meals every few hours starting at breakfast, but I hated forcing myself to eat so early in the morning, and I ended up eating over my calories for the day when I did. What I like about leangains is that I have a lot of calories to eat after I workout because I’m ravenous after I workout. As with anything fitness related, I think you just need to find what works for you. Try it, and if you like it, then stick with it. 🙂

I did fasting when I was younger, and it works, but if not done correctly, it can be dangerous. I wish you luck if you try it out!

My dad recommended IF, but given I go a bit loopy when my blood sugar starts dropping… not the plan for me.

@elle_z: It is ok to “jump start” your weght loss if you need the psychological boost of seeing immediate weight loss. I definitely would not fast and exercise together.

I just recently watched a programme on this subject on the BBC. In the programme the presenter (who is also a Dr) explored the benefits of various forms of calorie restriction, including IF (and variations on it). He found that when he did a version called the 5:2 (5 days eating normally with 2 days of ‘fast’ per week) not only did he lose weight (14lbs) over a 5 week period, but he also decreased his blood glucose, cholesterol and IGF-1 (which has been linked to cancer). I am definately going to try it as it seems that there are lots of benefits (not only weight) including perhaps lower cancer, heart disease and dementia.

Oo, I really like Michael Mosley. I saw his programme on exercise and high intensity bursts, and it was really interesting. As I have borderline impaired glucose tolerance (which is something he addresses in that programme) I find it really helpful.

I am doing 14/10, because I read that the 16/8 is too stressful for women. I will admit that I don’t stick strictly by the 14/10. I basically tell myself no eating after 8 pm, which means I can eat again at 10 am. I try not to eat before 10 am, but if I’m not hungry at that time, I don’t force myself to eat. Like today, I wasn’t hungry until after 11:30 am, so I just waiting until I knew I was actually hungry.
One of the reasons this kind of fast works is because it gives your body time to burn the fat your body has stored. When your body constantly has food in its stomach, it will use the energy from the food you’ve eaten rather than going to its fat stores.
I’ve been doing it for a month, and I’ve never had so much energy. Even my husband has noticed the difference. I had hit a plateau, which lasted pretty much the entire month of July, and when I switch to IF, I started losing weight again. I even lost weight during my period–something I NEVER do. It’s been coming off slowly 1-2 pounds per week, but that’s fine with me.
This is something I can do very easily. I’m on 1200 calorie diet, and it was so hard to divide those calories into 3 meals and 3 snack, which is what most diets recommend. Now I can eat a good, well-balanced healthy meal in the morning and do the same in the evening with a snack in between if I want, and even some chocolate at night. I’m completely satisfied and haven’t had any ill effects, and I’m hypoglycemic, so I was prepared for this not to work.
ETA: Since I started this, I’ve also noticed that I’m losing my cankles, something I was really trying to get rid of!

I am interested in this program because my loss not only slowed, but I am more interested in losing fat than weight, and eating at a deficit plus working out don’t seem to be doing much as it is. I want to kick-start myself and see if I can break the plateau. To me, leangains seems reasonable — eating 8 hrs and fasting 16 — especially because you already fast 8 hours just by sleeping. I can see how starving yourself is super unhealthy, but IF isn’t starving yourself, it’s just limiting the times you eat.
