@elysion:  Okay, I am not a total help, but you do need the letters JAPAN or CHINA writen in English. That is how the post office figures out where to send it.

Here is an example from a blog: http://danielkonold.com/blog/2009/10/mailing-address-in-china/

For my addresses, I wrote them in Spanish with the word Spain on the bottom. I figured that the native language is best because that is what people will read. I think letters are fine for Japan.

I know for Japan you can write it in English. I had a few sent there just fine in English 🙂

This probably doesn’t help, but we sent one to Hong Kong in regular “English” and it got there just fine.

I am not positive but after speaking with my fmil (who is from Taiwan) she said I can write everything in English. I am curious if anyone had problems with invites getting there bc of the address not in Mandarin.  I do know that I will need to fill out a customs form even though I am just sending invites.  Just a heads up on that, you may want to check with your post office to see if you will need to do that as well.
