We just realized this, and some of you may know and others may not care…
Check out your credit card company’s fee policy before you leave or start charging your wedding expenses. We’ve been charging wedding thing on our American Express and were getting a 2% “international” charge. With the new credit card rules that just went in place, you don’t need to be on foreign soil, like before. Now, as long as your purchase involves a business outside of the US, it’s an international surcharge. So, when you’re paying your resort, caterer, florist, whomever, from your computer at home you’ll get this charge on your card.
So far, we’ve paid around $400 in fees (resort, photographer, hair/make up…) and will probably end up paying at least a couple hundred more.
Our Am-ex is 2% and our Wells Fargo Visa is 3%… if you just use a Visa card it’s only 1%, so that is really the best option (WellsFargo tacks on 2% just for them). For our ATM cards, it’ll be a $5 fee + 2% of whatever we take out.
Something also to pass along to guests, in any pre-wedding emails or whatever, just so they aren’t blindsided when they get their statement after traveling. It probably won’t break the bank, but it’s annoying.
