I feel your pain as a Canadian doing my MA in the UK. I’m allowed to work 20h/wk on my visa, but the job market here is incredibly bad, so I’ve just been focusing on school while my poor FI is working. Can’t wait to finish my thesis and get back to Canada to get married, and for both of us to be in decent jobs!

Good luck with everything. It’ll get better eventually, right? 🙂

What about waiting tables? That’s basically cash. Or babysitting? Cleaning houses or offices? I’d probably find a way to work under the table.

@MissVisuality:

I know what you mean. Have you tried working in nursing or residential homes? The pay is alright but it’s back breaking work.

@fabange:  I’m really not suited for any kind of healthcare work. Not being picky, but let’s just say when I accompanied my mom (an RN who works in Critical Care and Trauma) for “Take Your Kid to Work Day” when I was younger, I had to sit down a lot for fear of passing out.
I’m at the end of my MA now, so looking for work is pretty pointless. I’m already applying for every job I find back home, though!

@MissVisuality:  lol ok, I know it can be hard. I am sure with your MA you will get something better back home. GL

Reverse situation, I studied in Canada as an international student and (at the time) I too couldn’t work outside campus, not even a co-op or internship.  Just hang in there if I made it so can you =)  A few other suggestions include: tutoring and studies.  Don’t know where you are about but at my university there were lots of psychology studies (no needles and drugs lol) with varied pay depending on how long it was.  There are medical studies too but I’d steer away from them!
