Is it sad that I'm not surprised or shocked by this? I should be, but I know that they are still narrow minded people out there who feel this way. Such archaic thinking! (other words I can think of...but I'll keep it clean)
This makes me want to cry. It makes me sick to my stomach that people think this way & whats worse is that this is someone in a position of authority. Shameful.
How disgusting.
His defense? "I'm not racist! I have piles and piles of black friends"
My favorite line: "They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom." Well, how very nice of you to let "them" use your bathroom. Disgusting.
@Eaq219: It's just unbelievable. That line made me want to puke. You can't get much more ignorant.
I've dealt with racism my entire life and, while it does make me mad at times, I tend not to take ignorance/stupidity/bigotry personally. But these viewpoints are just so backwards and sound so like something from the 60s, and are such an hinderance to societal progress.
I'm aware that when FH was born, our marriage would have been illegal in most states. But this, happening today, is absolutely disgusting and based on SO MUCH ignorance.
Besides, what's he afraid of? So many things could happen to an interracial child! Maybe he'd grow up to become, I don't know, the PRESIDENT? ?!?!
You know, we were denied a public restroom at a gas station in Arkansas b/c my mom was "a chink woman". Um, my mom is half korean you dumbass and "chink" is offensive. And if you'e ever seen my mom, you'd know she's just gorgeous, not to mention she loves everyone, works with the elderly and has worked with handicapped kids. Biggest heart ever.
Right after we were told no, we saw a big white woman come waddling out.
Talk about culture shock..."welcome to the midwest you californians!" thanks. geesh.
What a terrible man! And he's suppose to be doing the Lord's work? What a joke! Who the hell does he think he is to tell someone they can't get married cuz "he doesn't believe in mixing races that way". Wtf? Who the hell died and made you God?
Ugh! see it ppl like this that make you just wanna reach out and touch someone!
We are a mixed race couple...me a black girl and he a white man and our son is absolutely beautiful so wtf does he mean "I think those children suffer and I won't help put them through it". Wtf? I can't say wtf enough!
This man needs to be slapped with a combination of the reality stick and the whoop ass stick!
Wow. I wonder if the Justice of the Peace is elected or appointed in LA? Because if he was elected, I hope there is so much back lash that he isn't elected again.
I read this earlier!! What a creep!!!! Who is he to decide who can marry and WHY?? Grrrr!!!!
can anyone say law suit..... what saddens me is this guy is going to have supporters of his attitude
seriously, love and marriage isnt about colour, nationality or gender
@mitla: hahaha good point! Its safe to say he didn't vote for President Obama.
This really saddens me. More shoked how open he is to admit such idea.
... I"m having a really hard time swallowing this whole thing. Absolutely heart breaking.
Personally, I believe this is the most ironic line of all:
"I try to treat everyone equally"
That's really disgusting. I hope his license to be a justice of the peace is yanked...
lol-thank you for letting black people use your bathroom, you definitely must not be a racist.. Silly man
I'm with Mr. Bee on this. I really hope that license gets taken away. And I hope people boycott going to him.
It's just terrible that this shit exists.
coming to louisiana from a "northern" state i can tell you that racism exists here like no other. the parish that they are talking about has a very small black population. i actually live in the parish where the kkk was founded. it's pretty sickening here and m deals with it more than me because he is a pipe fitter. he actually had someone spit their tobacco in his tool box after calling him a boy.. let's just say he almost stuck his wrench up their ass (and this was only a few months ago)... for me it is foreign because at home people are people. here you are a black person and oh my you are actually intelligent, you don't speak with slurs, you're an exception, when actually i'm the norm... you can actually tell who the people are that are racist because they look at you with a sort of smirk then they start at your feet and work their way back up with the same smirk (and THEY HAVE NO FRIGGIN' TEETH) so you think to yourself, you've got to be f'g kidding me. and after having been in interracial relationships it is funny because i don't see people like that. but this is also the city that denied the adoption of a same-sex couple (they had the child and were moving or something like that from nyc and the courts wouldn't acknowledge that they were the parents, even though nyc had acknowledged it) so i'm not surprised at all. louisiana is the most backwards place in the world in terms of thinking, especially in the smaller parishes. i mean i almost moved to a small city, but i looked up how diverse the area was, we would have been the ONLY black people in the city. OMG i never even knew all white cities still existed?!
@ Diva: Yeah, it's maddeningly frustrating! I am pretty scared just to visit the Deep South with dark skin, let alone settle there! It just reminds me how young the US is. Serious discrimination was the norm only one generation ago: the elders I work with in the clinics can tell some pretty horrifying stories. But yeah, I too would be terrified that my interracial child might one day grow up to be elected president by a wide margin. :)
I'm sure that all those black friends this (hopefully former) JoP has won't be coming over for dinner or using his bathroom again anytime soon.
@babyboo: Yeah, he treats everyone equally...just some more equally than others!
I am actually shocked by this. It kind of makes me sick. And sad.
That is horrific. I like the comments about letting black people use his bathroom at home! What the hell? Does that make you ok with black people?
It astounds me that a place like New Orleans is still so popular for conventions, etc.
Unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me that some "people" still have this attitude. Quite frankly, I doubt this JP has ever investigated his own geneology.
What would sadden me more is if the state did not start proceedings to remove him from his position as JP. It makes you question his impartiality when handling other matters.
It is quite an un-defensible lawsuit on its way.
I'm not American - so I don't know how the system works...but how is it legal to deny someone a marriage license on the basis of race? Aren't there anti-discrimination clauses? In my province, For example, if a government official in my home province is part of a religious group that does not believe in same sex marriage...they do not have the ability to deny marriage license based on their own personal views. As a representative of the government, it is their duty to represent the views of the government. Is the situation different in Louisiana? I really am curious.
By the way...FI and I are from different races and it just makes me sick to think there are some places in this world where we can still not get married.
I'm guessing most people probably just say "ok", get mad, and find someone else. They're getting married; i doubt the last thing they want to deal with is a lawsuit over a petty and ignorant man. I doubt any interracial couple wants to be married by this fool, so they just go as far away as they can from him. But yeah, i was wondering how he's managed to NOT get a formal complaint filed. Or if this is like the whole Plan B with pharmacists thing--where, as a justice of the priest, you can deny someone marriage based on your personal beliefs? I guess I thought we had anti-discrimination laws in place, too, but apparently there was a system failure.
Yeah, there are crappy people out there like this unfortunately. I see it too often in Missouri and I've had people tell me how much "harder" those kids have it. Um, kids with glasses have it hard, too! And with braces....and poor kids and fat kids and Muslim kids and vegetarians. I mean, seriously.
He (the JP) actually has some pretty solid legal backing on his side though. The popularity of the Defense of Marriage Act pretty much says that the Government CAN tell americans who they can and cannot marry.
@Dragonsus...I was under the impression that The Defense of Marriage Act related specifically to same-sex marriage and specifically how a same-sex marriage in one state does not have to be recognized in another state. Can you explain how the Defense of Marriage Act pertains to biracial couples? Again...I'm not American, but I was under the impression that Loving vs. Virginia made miscegeny laws in all states illegal. I personally support same-sex marriage and am happy 2 consenting adults regardless of gender are able to marry in my province. But can you explain how the DMA relates specifically to interracial couples in a legal sense?
A form of the defense of marriage act was used in the early-mid 20th century to prevent interracial couples from marrying. It stated that the children from these unions would be socially harmed by their parent's genetic makeup, because they would not be accepted in either community. (I.e. Exactly what the Louisiana Judge stated as his reason for not marrying the couple). The current DOMAs (and they do vary) have among many other reasons stated that since gay/lesbian couples cannot produce children they should not be recognized as marriages. To my way of thinking (and I admit, I may be directed by passion rather than complete legal sense) that means that any hetero couple who cannot produce children shouldn't be allowed to marry either, which opens a whole other can of worms.
The thing is, that the resurgence of the DOMAs opens the doors for all sorts of things to be legal again - and the JP in Louisiana is probably just the start.
I can't believe there are still people here who are so ignorant and horrible. I was so shocked & saddened to read that article, but thanks for sharing this with us.
@Dragonsus Thanks for the clarification. I was unaware that there were different variations of the act and the history behind it.
Stupid person. He goes on saying that he has friends that are black but that he can't marry interracial couples because the children aren't fully accepted! I'm sorry but that's pretty much going completely against what you said before about liking black people. Who cares about race? People are people and you should love them all!
This upsets me so much! It hits home because my fiance is black and I'm white. We don't see too many overt forms of racism but we know it still exists and its disgusting! I have a friend who hasn't spoken to me since we started dating because her family doesn't approve. I worry about our future children being accepted :(
