In the past month I interviewed for a job, I didn’t originally hear back from the company so I assumed I didn’t get the job. They later called me to tell me that they had filled the position with an internal candidate.
The interesting part of the phone call is that they said while they had filled this position there was another position they were considering me for and wanted me to apply for. I was told on the phone that they had only called back a few candidates from the original interview for this other job so I felt really great about the whole thing. (I had this stated to me both over the phone and by e-mail).
I applied for the job and now have received no further communication about scheduling an interview when I should have heard by now. I’m very perplexed why they would have asked me to apply but not even given me the chance to interview. I realize that I may still not have been offered the job, but part of me wants to know why? Do you think it would be appropriate to ask? I guess I’m just stuck on the fact that they asked me to apply and now apparently aren’t interested seems strange.

How long ago did you apply for the second job?

Whether or not you should say something depends on how long it’s been since you applied. I would absolutely never ask them why you didn’t get the job after they asked you to apply, or any variation of that. I do think it would be appropriate to send them an email just as a follow up to thank them for their consideration and to let them know you are still interested and that you look forward to hearing from them. That way if they have already filled the position, they will probably tell you, but if they haven’t, it will remind them of you!

I would phone the person who asked you to apply and let them know you have done so. If it has been under a week, I would ask if they need any further information for this new position or some other question to make it clear you are interested. If it has been 2 weeks, I would ask when you should expect further information related to your new application. Making contact would also give them the chance to let you know if they don’t have your application or if the position has already been filled.
