We have a small (61 made it to guest list) wedding.
We were going to ipod it yada, yada long story short we think due to the intimate size we need a D.J more than ever to keep things flowing, announce dances, wrap up early to let guests know we’re wrapping up, etc.
I found 11 good reviews, no bad reviews but still want to meet him in person, see how he presents himself, talk about his style and our view, etc.
Umm….is that normal!? LOL I think I read somewhere about asking for referencs and meeting vendors…I did in fact ask for 3 refrences from recent wedding/events…
He’s affordable, almost to good to be true, but I don’t want to sign on the line without meeting the dude..
Will the etiquette police get me?

Hi – We just hired our DJ this weekend, so I can relate. I looked @ reviews, got recommendation from DOC, and then we met him. I asked several questions about things I was concerned with, and paid attention to his answers, I sort of checked out his style. FI and I spent over an hour with him, and then we went off and discussed things. We took it pretty seriously since for us at least this person is more or less the host of our wedding, and we really wanted the right tone to be set. I don’t think it’s unusual; there is a recent post on here from a DJ about this subject, you could check that as well.

I’d definitely suggest you meet the DJ, or at least speak with the ones you’re considering. Good reviews does not guarantee a good connection between the two of you.
In searching for our DJ, I spoke with a few people. Many I spoke with sounded like they would be great at what they do, though their personality felt kind of ehh to me…definitely a clashing for me, and luckily my fiance didn’t mind me doing the filtering. The person we ended up going with was someone we both felt really comfortable with, and felt like there was a good personality click.
So, anyway…I wouldn’t go just by reviews, because good reviews doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be a good match for what you’re seeking.

Maybe I’m just picky, but I find a large portion of DJ’s to be chachy, so I would definitely want to meet them beforehand.

We met with a few DJs and I enjoyed the experience. We got to watch a video of one company of actual weddings and see how they introduce you and things like that. I thought it was fun to meet with DJs, plus those I didn’t pick gave me packets to help me get organized that I still refer to.

Definitely normal! We’ve met with one DJ and are trying to line up schedules to meet with another before we make our decison.

Absolutely interview DJ’s! You would be crazy not to! We found a guy who sounded amazing on paper and online but when we met him we realized he wasn’t even kinda right for us. And the person who looked kinda “meh” on paper and online was awesome when we talked to him and were able to see sample videos of him working. We went with that guy.
