Hello Boston hive!
Are there any brides out there that are planning/have planned/have attended a very small wedding in Boston (downtown Boston, South End, Back Bay, or Jamaica Plain areas perhaps)?
We’re hoping to have an intimate, immediate family-and-closest-friends-only wedding of about 25 (or so) guests, and I’d love to hear about ceremony and/or reception venues that let this sort of wedding (a tiny one!) really shine in its own right. Any good or bad reviews of venues that are appropriate for such a small group?
And if it helps at all, we’re envisioning a classically elegant, slightly vintage-styled wedding without much fuss. It’ll be pretty casual — a good reason to put on a cocktail dress, but as low stress as possible for both us and our guests.
Thanks for any and all ideas!

We had our ceremony (for a dozen people) in Winchester, and our reception at the Legal Sea Foods in Burlington, if that would be helpful. We have a wedding recap here, and vendor reviews here.

I can’t help with the ceremony but we had our reception at Les Zygomates Wine Bar in downtown Boston (a 2 minute walk from South Station). Our group was larger, about 70 people, but they do have a private room which might work for you. We had a really fantastic experience! The food was wonderful and their coordinator was super easy to work with. PM me if you’d like some more info.

I’m not from Boston but the intimate weddings website has a venue finder that might be of help.
http://www.intimateweddings.com (I think!)
Good luck! I’m having my intimate wedding (50ppl) in NJ.

Our wedding was 60 ppl total (including us). And we had it at Hampshire House near the public garden downtown and it was just way amazing. It is definitely a perfect place for a small wedding and reception. It’s like having a wedding in someone’s very new england home.
If you want to check out the place, they have jazz brunch on Sundays. Pretty decent food and you can get a feel of the ambiance.

I’d be just a bit nervous about the http://www.intimateweddings.com thing, as it appears to be all paid advertising–users cannot submit venues. That’s usually a bad thing if you’re on a budget–the ones that can afford to advertise often have higher rates.

I heard good things about Les Zygomates near South Station is a great place to have a small wedding. It’s a cute restaurant and it’s very cute. In Cambridge, you can try Upstairs in the Square or Henrietta’s Table at the Charles Hotel. Hope this helps!

I live in the Boston area and hope to have an intimate wedding (13 total). But I have no concrete plans yet. I’d love to see what you come up with!

What about Mistral: http://www.mistralbistro.com/salon.htm
I haven’t been there, but I’ve heard good things about it and it looks really nice! 🙂

@sarahnyc23…wow…I just checked out Mistral..it looks really nice!
Oh, and I went to Upstairs on the Square in October for my birthday…its beautiful!!! Definitely a funky yet classy place to have a reception. It would be perfect for a small wedding. I might have it there, though I haven’t had up my mind

Thanks everyone! I had no idea that I got so many replies (I failed to subscribe to the updates!). These places are all great! I’ve put in requests for proposals at Les Zygomates, Stixx Boston/33 Restaurant and Lounge, and Gaslight (among a few others). And now that our guest list has ballooned to 50 guests, I think these places might be even more appropriate. We’re going for a swanky/cocktail style reception (as opposed to a formal sit down dinner), so Les Zygomates could be perfect! I’ll definitely check out Mistral and Hampshire House too, thanks!
@Luli29 — you should check out some of the boutique hotels in the area. Some of them have the perfect space for very intimate weddings. Before our guest list jumped to its final number of 50, I thought about the Lenox Hotel and their restaurant called Azure. This bride and groom on Intimate Weddings tipped me off to the hotel: http://www.intimateweddings.com/blog/real-weddings-darcy-jasons-wedding-at-a-boston-boutique-hotel/

I’d also recommend checking out the Old State House. We had our ceremony there, and it was packed at 75 guests. 50 or so guests would fit very comfortably, and it has that great old fashioned feel. We love love loved it. You can rent the whole place out too if you want to have your reception there as well (we considered it, but 75 people was just too large a group for sit down and dancing and such, which we wanted).

I absolutely recommend the venue I’m using for my wedding, even though it will be a little bigger than yours. the Hampshire House (http://www.hampshirehouse.com). It’s on Beacon Hill right across from the Gardens/Boston Common, and it’s gorgeous! They are also a pleasure to work with – our coordinator Michele is great!
The room where we’re having our cocktail hour would be perfect for a wedding your size, I think.

I second (or 3rd!) Hampshire House It’s such a beautifull place and the food and service is outstanding. It might be a little pricey, though. I love that place.

Just curious – where did you end up deciding?
