Our wedding is April 2010...we actually for our venue almost a month or two after our engagement because we knew it was a popular place and didn't want to lose our spot! But nothing else until April when the dress shopping and trying on begins!! I'm so excited for that! And I may have bought invitations already! LOL! They were 45 for $15! I said WOW! and bought them! HEHE! Congrats and good luck with your planning.
Now I'm almost exactly 1 year away -- but it will be 20 full months of engagement by the time we're done. We did a lot of things in the first few months because I am going to be traveling for three months and when I get back it's "only" 8 months until the wedding. And during those 8 months -- we have 8 weddings before our own!! My advice - since you have so much time - is to do it step by step. Like you said, start with the location, then I'd move onto the dress, then the photographers, etc etc ... people will book out as far as you want. Just make sure their contracts will last more then a year!
Good luck and have fun!
I also have a sept. 2010 wedding. We got engaged in August and booked the venue in early November. We could have waited logner but I wanted labor day weekend and it books up fast. Other than that, I havent done much else. I think at the beginning of 2009, I will start registering and planning my engagement party which is in June. I've also begun to lose weight (hopefully I can keep it off for 2 years). Actually I started before the engagement when we got a Wii Fit in June. I've lost 15 lbs. since June (its now December). I think I'm at an ideal weight now. I started out at 115, which is high for me as I am only 5'1'' and am now 100. Any tips?
I'm Sept. 2010 too! In total, we'll have been engaged for a full 3 yearsa and one month almost exactly to the day. We planned a long engagement for long distance planning purposes but could not have made it any shorter if we wanted our venue because they book up January 2nd the year before. I'm counting down these last few days so we can finally have a venue and date confirmed but we have been able to use this time to take advantage of sales on things like centerpiece flower pots, facvors, etc. I've even bought my dress and we just ordered the ties for the groomsmen! Considering, we only plan to be in the state of our wedding 3 more times before the actual wedding, I don't feel like we have a lot of time to plan but I do feel like the engagement has been forever! Good luck planning month twins!
Im newly engaged(NYE) and we're planning a Sept 25th 2010 wedding. For the next few months we're just going to worry about the big things like venue and bridal party, Im also hoping to have engagement photos taken this spring...then around September we'll have to start the major other things like Dresses and invitations and such...This is all very new to me as havent been around weddings or wedding planning that much :/
Hooray Sept 2010 brides! I really do love having a lot of time to check out sales on invitations, favors, etc. without feeling pressured to make an immediate decision.
@ HumarockBride: thanks for the contract tip! I guess I assumed that most vendors besides the venuedon't book out that far, but now I can really get started checking out photographers and caterers.
@ ibblues: I love the Wii Fit too! congrats on your weight loss!
I guess I'm also a little unsure about buying items, then wanting to change my mind... did you guys feel really comfortable about making decisions so far out? What did you change your mind about, if anything?
Thats why I'm not looking for the dress until this summer/fall. I don't know what I will like in 20 months and I think styles will change as well.
I think the big things to book for now are the venue and then the band and photographer. Those are really the only vendors who can only do one wedding at a time.
Also, my engagement party is in June so I'm going to start planning for that.
I've changed my mind on accent colors but my dress is very classic so I don't worry that it will go out of style. We bought decor and favors, etc. because we found some great sales that we didn't want to pass up on the things we planned to buy anyway if that makes sense. I guess we should start looking for a caterer more seriously and a photog.
Hi gals! I'm also a Sept 2010 bride! My FI and I got engaged last week and are still trying to determine a venue, even though we have decided on a date - 9/18/10. I'm very excited! Hopefully we'll nail down the ceremony/reception location within the next few weeks.
Hi! We got engaged in January and have set a date of 9/25/10. Kinda freaking out about all the stuff to do but that's what's great about a long engagement right?
Hi! My <3 and I got engaged on Feb. 5th 2009 and we are planning our wedding for September 25th 2010 - It looks like there are a bunch of us getting married on the same day:) We wanted to set the date far in advance so we could plan without feeling rushed. I think it's a good idea to start looking at things early, because then you have time to mull over everything and make sure that you're making the right decisions...
Congrats everyone :)
@ Chreee123 We're actually doing the same day too :) We actually picked the date because it would be 5 years to the day of when we started dating and I needed a longer engagement so that it wouldn't be too stressful planning everything while I'm still in school.
Hi bees!
I am a Bay Area bride and also thinking of Labor Day Sunday 2010...things book up so fast. Hopefully getting out venue this weekend!
Hi, month twins! I'm glad to see that more people are embracing the longer engagement. We are loving it! We have had a ton of fun planning the wedding so far, and I have not felt rushed or stressed for ANYTHING so far. It is actually my plan to have everything done planning and creating wise a year from now so that we can spend the last 6 months of our engagement taking care of ourselves in a stress free and memorable time.
We got engaged in August of 2008, so that means we have a 25 month engagement. We planned this because I'm in school right now, and that has been pretty taxing on my time and energy.
I'm a September 18th, 2010 bride...any other 9/18/10 brides?
I'm also planning a September 2010 wedding. We've already been engaged for 6 months at this point and I'm in no rush. I figure the long engagement will give us more time for all the DIY projects I want to do!!!
i'm planning a september 2010 wedding. we just booked our venue last week and i'm estatic!!! i'm working full time and going to grad school part time, so i'm super busy all the time. i'm graduating in december, so that gives us 9 months to do the hard core wedding planning stuff after that. also gives us lots of time to save up moolah.
Hi there! New to the site so thought I'd say hi in this thread. I'm planning a Sept 2010 wedding - we went for Labor Day weekend because we have a lot of people traveling. Plus, it's cheaper to get married on the Sunday of a holiday weekend (esp. in the NY Metro area). We got engaged in Feb of this year, so it's a pretty long engagement too -- almost 20 months!! It does help when you're planning - sure it gives us time to save $$ but also more time to look around and really check out vendors! I stink at DIY but I really do LOVE some of the ideas I got from this site.

I may be the only girl on here who's planning a wedding almost 2 years out... but I'm just enjoying all the fantastic ideas on here for now. The only serious planning thing I might do really early is book a venue, since places in the bay area fill up quickly, but other than that I'm saving the hardcore planning for about a year before the wedding.
Anyone else in the same boat?
