Hello UK bees! And if you're new here, welcome. :)

I thought it might be nice to have a permanent thread where we can introduce ourselves and maybe have it as a sticky at the top of the UK board to welcome new UK bees with. I feel it's a little lonely over here sometimes but I've met some great UK bees and I think it'd be lovely to make an extra big effort to be welcoming to new UK bees as they stumble across the UK board for the first time.

So, just for fun, here's a few questions and it'd be fun if folks (whether new or old to the UK board) could post their replies down below.

    1. Whereabouts in the UK do you live now? (just your county will do if you're not comfortable being more specific)

    2. Whereabouts in the UK (or elsewhere) are you from originally?

    3. Are you married, engaged or one of our waiting bees?

    4. What do you and your SO do for a living?

    5. Any kids?

    6. Where did you/where will you get married?

    7. What do you think is most different about UK weddings to other countries' weddings?

    8. What's your favourite UK city?

    9. Can you recommend any good UK holiday locations?

    10. What are your favourite UK TV programmes?

I'm always up for these things!

    1. Whereabouts in the UK do you live now? Fife (although I work in Edinburgh)

    2. Whereabouts in the UK (or elsewhere) are you from originally? Edinburgh

    3. Are you married, engaged or one of our waiting bees? Engaged with less than five months to go.

    4. What do you and your SO do for a living? I work for the Government and he's an IT techie

    5. Any kids? Not yet!

    6. Where did you/where will you get married? Fingask Castle, Perthshire

    7. What do you think is most different about UK weddings to other countries' weddings? The day and evening separation seems to be fairly unique. We're having 140ish people during the day and 250+ at night.

    8. What's your favourite UK city? Edinburgh (sorry, it's the best).

    9. Can you recommend any good UK holiday locations? Elie in Fife is a really lovely place to stay and all the tourists tend to be Scottish. Fabulous little foodie haven.

    10. What are your favourite UK TV programmes? "Yes, Minister", "Don't Tell The Bride!", "Threesome", "Strictly Come Dancing" amongst others.

    11. After starting it, are you going to reply Vicky?

@SpecialSundae: Yes, I am, I just needed a breather after typing all that!

    1. Whereabouts in the UK do you live now? (just your county will do if you're not comfortable being more specific) Yorkshire.

    2. Whereabouts in the UK (or elsewhere) are you from originally? Cambridgeshire.

    3. Are you married, engaged or one of our waiting bees? I'm a waiting bee.

    4. What do you and your SO do for a living? I work in community fundraising and he works in IT.

    5. Any kids? Not yet.

    6. Where did you/where will you get married? In the UK... probably Cambridgeshire.

    7. What do you think is most different about UK weddings to other countries' weddings? The indoor thing... and how long they last. I'm really glad our weddings are long though and that we don't have lots of expensive showers to throw and attend.

    8. What's your favourite UK city? It's hard to say. I like big cities (I'm a bit biased because I just moved to one) but I also adore pretty, little cities like York, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Oxford and I'm dying to visit Bath.

    9. Can you recommend any good UK holiday locations? County Antrim in Northern Ireland - the Northern coastline there is so gorgeous. Also Cornwall, of course, for surfing (or trying but failing to surf and just walking around dressed in cool surfer fashion anyway).

    10. What are your favourite UK TV programmes? I'm ashamed to admit just how much TV I actually watch but some of my favourites are Don't Tell The Bride (of course... I talk about it enough on here), Him & Her, The Apprentice, Doctor Who, Being Human, Silent Witness, New Tricks, Fresh Meat and Shameless (series 1 and James McAvoy will always have my heart, though). I also watch terrible things like Eastenders, Hollyoaks, Waterloo Road and X Factor from time to time.

    Hey!

    1. Whereabouts in the UK do you live now? (just your county will do if you're not comfortable being more specific) Leicester

    2. Whereabouts in the UK (or elsewhere) are you from originally? Worcester

    3. Are you married, engaged or one of our waiting bees? Married

    4. What do you and your SO do for a living? He's an electrical engineer and I work in resource admin

    5. Any kids? SO has a son

    6. Where did you/where will you get married? We got married in Worcester

    7. What do you think is most different about UK weddings to other countries' weddings? We don't traditionally send save-the-dates and I've noticed in the US that weddings tend to start ater in the afternoon.

    8. What's your favourite UK city? Manchester, though would like to visit Edinburgh

    9. Can you recommend any good UK holiday locations? Lake District, London

    10. What are your favourite UK TV programmes? Don't Tell The Bride and Motorway Cops

@VickyAurea: The indoor thing is an English thing rather than a UK thing. (I'm forever pointing that out.)

Ooh! A couple of Scottish wedding quirks are the ceilidh and the pourout!

@SpecialSundae: Oh dear! I even know that you're forever pointing that out. Sorry!

    I am ceilidh-mad. What's a pourout again? I'm sure I know but have forgotten.

    1. London

    2. Originally from CA, most recently from NYC (moved to London at the beginning of Oct). So I'm an ex-pat.

    3. Recently married

    4. I am currently looking for a job, have been since I got here. DH works in the computer field

    5. No kids, but we have a wonderful 3 yr old cat who we just brought over from the USA. What an ordeal that is!

    6. We got married at the end of September on the coast of Maine, USA

    7. From what I've seen, the fact that bridesmaids come in after the bride rather than before. That and most weddings have a "wedding breakfast" (I've been watching a fiar bit of Four Weddings).

    8. London... I haven't been anywhere else in the UK yet...

    9. Nope, but would love to see recommendations!

    10. Faves probably are Life's Too Short, an Idiot Abroad, and The Ricky Gervais show. Karl Pilkington and Ricky Gervais are hilarious. I also watch Come Dine with Me, Don't Tell the Bride, and A Very British Party and that's all I've really watched that's British. Otherwise I've been watching American TV (Royal Pains, Terra Nova, Game of Thrones, etc).

I'm one of the American expats, but I still live here so I'm going to answer!

    1. Whereabouts in the UK do you live now? (just your county will do if you're not comfortable being more specific) Norfolk
    2. Whereabouts in the UK (or elsewhere) are you from originally? The US. St. Louis, MO
    3. Are you married, engaged or one of our waiting bees? I'm married. We celebrated our 1 year anniversary on October 30th.
    4. What do you and your SO do for a living? DH is US Air Force stationed here in England. I am a SAHW/soon-to-be mom
    5. Where did you/where will you get married? St. Louis, MO
    6. What do you think is most different about UK weddings to other countries' weddings? No idea, since I'm American.
    7. What's your favourite UK city? So far, Cambridge
    8. Can you recommend any good UK holiday locations? No idea since we've only been here 4 months. I really want to go to the Lake District though.
    9. What are your favourite UK TV programmes? QI, Black Books, Doctor Who, Don't Tell the Bride, Life on Mars, and Top Gear are a few that we watch/have watched.

@KatNYC2011: I was thinking of you and of zippylef (though she's lived here longer so has maybe explored plenty) when I wrote the question about UK-based holiday places so you could explore further than London for you and Norfolk for zippylef.

As for bridesmaids, sometimes they come in before the bride because we've been watching lots of American TV and think that's the tradition. But in the Catholic church it has to be after, I think, and lots of brides are surprised when they learn it's not our true tradition here.

    1. Whereabouts in the UK do you live now? Cambridge

    2. Whereabouts in the UK (or elsewhere) are you from originally? East Sussex (south coast).

    3. Are you married, engaged or one of our waiting bees? Married :)

    4. What do you and your SO do for a living? I am a full time student (hence the location). My DH is partner in a building company.

    5. Any kids? Not yet.

    6. Where did you/where will you get married? We got married in our home town in East Sussex.

    7. What do you think is most different about UK weddings to other countries' weddings? I guess alot of the traditions and etiquette are different here. There seems to be much more emphasis put on etiquette by US brides on the bee, than i have experienced in the UK.

    8. What's your favourite UK city? I love London, Brighton, Cambridge and Manchester.

    9. Can you recommend any good UK holiday locations? I am ashamed to say that we very rarely stay in the UK for our holidays (shame on us!).

    10. What are your favourite UK TV programmes? Dont tell the Bride, The Apprentice, X-factor and a lot of channel 4 rubbish haha!

@VickyAurea: Oh, I didn't know it was a Catholic tradition to have the bridesmaids come after.

I've been about an hour or so out into the country for horseback riding, but I haven't really explored outside London yet.

I'm hoping to go to the lake district as I hear it's beautiful.

@VickyAurea: We've been here since the end of July. I haven't gotten out much yet. Been to Dover, Cambridge, Norwich, MK and around in the countryside of Norfolk/Suffolk/Cambridgeshire a bit. We are possibly driving to Birmingham this weekend. DH got to London on business, so he's been but I haven't.

I really want to go to the Lake District and I'm itching for Scotland as soon as we can.

If any of you want to visit Edinburgh, I'm always happy to help with accommodation recommendations, restaurant reviews and a generally friendly face.

@VickyAurea: A pourout is where the bride and groom throw money to local children as they leave church after the ceremony. It was a very strong tradition until recently.

@zippylef: How did I forget Dr Who? I'm having a TARDIS at my wedding!

@Elolith: Are you asking if you count as a UK bee? I just said UK because the board is called UK but of course you are very, very welcome too! (I think we have an honourary UK bee in Greece or somewhere, anyway, because they didn't have a board)

@zippylef: You need to get yourself to London! There's so much to see, though.... not sure you can really capture it except by walking around for many days, which is probably time you don't have and something a pregnant lady in London doesn't care to do.

    1. Whereabouts in the UK do you live now? (just your county will do if you're not comfortable being more specific) I live in Leixlip Ireland. So. Almost UK. I am half Brittish though, does that count?

    2. Whereabouts in the UK (or elsewhere) are you from originally? I only live in Ireland, my dad was born in Manchester.

    3. Are you married, engaged or one of our waiting bees? Engaged!

    4. What do you and your SO do for a living?I do IT engineering for the hardware side and my FI is a SW engineer mainly focusing on Linux systems. He got a promotion today actually. We both work for the same company just a few desks away from eachother.

    5. Any kids? I have one, Wilhelm  3,5 yrs old from a previous relationship.

    6. Where did you/where will you get married? Civil union in Ireland, Church wedding in Norway. FI's request :)

    7. What do you think is most different about UK weddings to other countries' weddings? I can't say, I think Scandinavian weddings differ, in US and UK seems to have more elaborate, detailed weddings. Scandinavian weddings are very modest in my opinion compared to some seen here :D I still love those weddings though!!

    8. What's your favourite UK city? Dorset with all the beautiful gardens!

    9. Can you recommend any good UK holiday locations? No. I can't in UK. But I can recommend Killarney and Cliffs of Moher as well as Donegal in Eire.

@ladyartichoke: Oh awesome! So, excuse my ignorance, but is that along the lines of lighting design, sound design, etc?

I love theater. My sister got us tickets to see One Man Two Govners when she's here and my mom is getting DH and I tickets to Matilda for Christmas as well so I'm excited to see some good theater.

We saw Pygmalion in the summer and it was great.

Exactly like Lighting Design (in fact, thats what the title of my degree is, but people never seem to get what I mean).  I've heard good things about One Man Two Govners AND I'm hoping to see Matilda next month (I love Tim Minchin; and it's such a fun story!)

Incidentally, Stratford-upon-Avon is another great UK holiday/exploring/daytrip recommendation from me!

DH and I went to see Matilda a couple of weeks ago.. it was AMAZING! I really really recommend it. Tim Minchin's songs are fantastic, and the actor who plays Miss Trunchball was beyond talented.

Although we were the only two over 18s in the saturday matinee not accompaning children haha!
