Just wanted to introduce myself – I’m new to the Bee (although I’ve been lurking around the boards for some time!).
My finace proposed this past summer while we were vacationing in Spain. We walked to the central park in Madrid, where he rented a rowboat for us and set out to find the perfect, secluded, spot. He even managed to get down on one knee!
We decided that rather than spend the money on a large wedding (our guest list would be 200+), we would take the trip we have dreamed of and have a private ceremony. For us, that trip is to Thailand! We will have a week to explore the country, before heading to Krabi, Thailand, where we will be getting married. Our second week will be spent in Krabi enjoying our honeymoon.
Well, that’s my story! Looking forward to (finally) participating in the boards!

Oh my gosh, Thailand is on my short list of places to travel to and a wedding there sounds amazing. What is the process like to get married there? We’ll be eloping next year but the red tape involved with getting married in another country, or at least Italy, was a big factor in the decision to stay stateside.

We just got back from our Hong Kong elopement, we wanted to get Thailand into our plans but it didn’t work out. It sounds like an amazing place to get married!
@Lauragirl: Did you look at other countries besides Italy? I heard France was a pain too, but Hong Kong was really easy we just had to send in some paperwork and then when we got into Hong Kong we had to verify all our info and we were set for the wedding day. I am not sure what to do know to file it with the US, but that shouldn’t add too much trouble. Anyway maybe if you keep looking you could find a place that’s simple too?

@Lauragirl: The legal process is acually quite involved: http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/service/marriage.html
You would need about a week in either Bangkok or Chang Mai to gather the necessary documents before you could legally marry. FI and I considered it, but we did not want to spend that long in Bangkok. We will be having a (secret) courthouse wedding before we leave, and have our ‘real’ ceremony on the beach in Krabi.
