Have you thought of going on google and getting images - some swirls are known as flourishes.
There is a great site without any copy right issues that you can go to. http://www.graphicsfairy.blogspot.com your right click on what image you want, save as - it should save it as a picture. Go to your word doco and go insert picture.
I find microsoft publisher great for this. You could download a free trial if you dont have it!
For fonts go to www.dafont.com and follow the instructions. It just adds a bit of pizazz to the invitation rather than standard fonts.
Oh also there is a website thats free that has invitation templates in word. already with the flourishes and cool stuff. www.downloadandprint.com

I'm seeing all these beautiful DIY invites printed off home computers. I just have MS Word, and not very savy with it. How are you ladies getting all the pretty swirls and graphics on your invites? Duh, I know!
