So I’m having a bridesmaid who is a screenprint artist, do my invitations. It really hasn’t been working out to well. It is a “gift” so I really want to try to make this work, but I’m really frustrated and I’m supposed to have the finished products in two weeks. Here are the details: When she offered to do it, I enthusiastically agreed and then told her that I would pay for all of the supplies because that was just too much to ask of her. So far I’ve sunk in about $400 in supplies for about 160 invitations. I have put in a huge amount of work designing the shape of the invitation, cutting the paper and designing every aspect of the words on the invitations because she says she won’t do that part. So essentially, she is only designing the background. I’m honestly ok with all that. Its been a bit annoying but I got it all done and now its time to do the design.
My problem starts here- We’ve had 3 different meetings about the design where i described my likes and dislikes and what was important to be included in the design. We came to this conclusion- I’m whimsical- I love flowing swirl designs with accents of flowers- simple clean lines and nothing to compete with the wording. She said she could do flowers but i needed to have a cloud of flowers or something like a tree to put them on to so that they could show up better. The cloud of flowers didn’t work because i’d have to add another color (literally a circle of color behind the flowers) to my invitation and i really didn’t like that idea, so we compromised and i said, have a small simple branch coming out from the side of the invite with flowers growing all over it.
We had a meeting where she showed me a design like described and it it was more of a large branch with lots of little branches coming out of the sides. I thought looked ok, but i asked her to erase many of the empty branches because it was too busy and they didn’t have flowers anyway.
On the enclosures we agreed to just do a swirl design around the headings and then have a few flower clusters on the bottom of the paper.
So skip forward to last night. Two weeks overdue and a few weeks before I need the finished product, I saw the final idea. It was NOTHING like we described or the previous proof. There was a HUGE tree coming up the side of the invite that was all goth/comicbook style looking with almost no flowers. The enclosure cards had no flowers at all… just a big dead tree going right up the middle through the wording.
I was floored and had no idea how to deal with this since she is my friend and I didn’t hire her. I voiced my complaints and asked what happened to the original design, and she said- “i thought this is what you wanted for the invite, and then once i finished that, the enclosures didn’t have enough going on so i adjusted it a bit”.
I did my best to keep my cool while she was there and discussed the flowers (she said they still had a problem showing up) and tried to make adjustments to what she had done to get it more in line with what i was picturing. But it was hard- how do you turn a goth dead tree into whimsical swirls and flowers without making her redo it? I actually kept the tree on all the enclosure cards and had them become more whimsical and curvy… and just did without the flowers all together
Since I started working with her, she complains about all these brides that change their minds 6 times. She considers the basic changes I asked for last night as me “completely changing my design”. I know she’s put in hours of work on this and don’t want to waste her time with more adjustments, but she isn’t listening to my requests either and I’m coming out with really weird invitations. I’m not loving how things left off last night but I’m still hoping this is salvagable.
What should i do? 1) Just take what she gives me and assume everyone will just throw the invititations away anyway, 2) push for even more changes (which she’ll get ticked about) and delay things another week or two or 3) ask for everything back and just do the design process myself… possibly losing a bridesmaid. I’ve got lots of international guests and we are already behind schedule, so i need to make a decision soon, but I’m freezing up trying to make a decision. Help!!
