Since you don't have extra space for these people, don't send invitations. Wedding announcements are the perfect thing to send. I sent them after I eloped, since we wanted people to know that there was already a wedding (our engagement party turned into a mini reception for us two weeks after we got back) and not to get their feelings hurt when they didn't receive an invitation.

My fiance and I are not having a huge wedding but invited quite a few people (180 invites for a venue that holds 130, 110 coming, perfect). But I didn't send invites to a bunch of people who I knew would not be able to come, like friends out west who I am still in touch with but not close with anymore. I just got an email from such a friend in Alaska who knew we were engaged but shocked to hear that the wedding was so soon! Like I said, we're not so close.
So for these friends should I just send wedding announcements? Our Thank You cards will be a picture post-card with a nice photo of us from the wedding day. Reverse side will be blank or we could always just print something like "We're Married! 7.28.2008" and then personalize it for either Thank You or hey FYI. I am not fishing for gifts or anything, but just thought it would be a nice way to let people know. Maybe even former co-workers.
What do you all think? I feel a little bad not sending the invites to those friends now. :(
