I put on the bottom of mine "formal reception to follow".....so you could write something similar that describes yours....my FSIL also had to tell people to not wear heels for the same reason, and put it on her website. She had all kinds of details on there, about kids at the wedding, their honeymoon, and the shoes. They just wrote something like, the ceremony will be outside, so women should wear appropriate shoes....
I'm having a garden ceremony, similar to a backyard as there is a huge lawn that people will walk on. So my invites read "for the garden ceremony and celebration of their marriage" at the very bottom I have including "reception luncheon immediately following ceremony until 2 pm".
I hope that helps!

For mine, I put Oceanside- so I hope that would mean duh in the sand...
As long as you put something in there about garden ceremony, then you should be cool- make sure you pass the word via your parents as well to make sure everyone knows for sure.

Hi ladies!
We're having a backyard wedding, and I'm trying to spread the word about wearing grass-friendly shoes (it may get ugly with spike heels, you know?)... Do you think I should put a little blurb on the invitation? I was thinking about saying something like "dressy casual attire"...but I don't really want to have that extra wording on the invites if it's not necessary. I could also put a note on our website, but still need to come up with the best way to word it. Suggestions welcome!
Thanks :)
