So, DH has apparently decided that he wants to get me a huge b-day present this year. I had no idea! Usually, we exchange something small but I guess it's his way of saying "Thanks for popping out my kid" too.

DH was going to just order the computer but then rethought it and decided to ask me. He's giving me the choice.... iPad 2 or desktop. I'm torn... I really want a new desktop but I also really want an iPad.

I can't decide! Give me an opinion and why!

I love my iPad. You can take it everywhere, it's easy to take around the house, you can download movies for roadtrips, you can use it for ebooks, best for if you just like to play around on the internet (not for doing anything Word related).....I always take it when I travel instead of a laptop!

As long as you have a computer already, I'd get the iPad2. I use mine all the time. It does not replace a computer though.

I also love my iPad, but if you need a new computer I would get a MacBook pro or MacBook air. The iPad is awesome but it doesn't fully replace a computer.

Omg, I read that as "Thanks for POOPing out my kid" at first.  I need to go to bed.

My mom had an ipad2 and it's great!  I don't think I could live without my laptop, though....if you already have a laptop of some sort, maybe go for the ipad!

I completely refuse to own a Mac computer. I would be getting a new, custom PC. I am a gamer, so is DH, and that is an area where Mac definitely falls short.

The thing about my desktop is that it's a skeleton. I bought it my sophomore year of college. It's old, slow and getting outdated, It's to the point that upgrading it would no longer be feasible. It straight up needs to be replaced. I have a laptop, but there are things that are better done on a desktop. We were already planning to replace it this year, it's just a question of replacing it now or getting an iPad now and waiting until the holidays to replace the desktop.

if you already have a laptop and you feel that certain things are better done on a desktop then i think you should get a desktop instead of a ipad.

i have a macbook and it was a pain to do certain things on it.  i bought an imac (i know you said you don't want a mac).  i have windows 7 installed on it because not every program is available on mac and plus i use a windows comp at work and i sometimes connect to it from home.

i'm using the imac right now because i need to use indesign to do invitations but last night i was really cold and tired so i sat in bed with the laptop.

my laptop is small enough to take with me most places and i am able to do more on it than an ipad.  i also have an iphone so i can do a few things on it.

i didn't feel a need for an ipad.  my little sis carried a macbook, ipad, iphone, and blackberry when she travels for work.  it's just too much to keep track of.

I have a desktop, a laptop, an iPad2 and an iPhone. Can we say spoiled? I haven't touched my desktop in 3+ years. My laptop is on 24/7 I swear (it's an HP, a total workhorse and I don't think I could live without it). I use my iPad in the kitchen and to play games before bed. I use my iPhone constantly (not just as a phone, it's really a mini computer with a phone function that occasionally gets used). If I had to ditch one, it would be my desktop 100%. If I then had to get rid of another, it would be my iPad, I love it, but it's a frill. I couldn't live without my laptop or my iPhone.

I'm struggling with the same decision! My laptop is accent, I have PowerBook G4 from 2005.

While the iPad would be really nice, as I could keep my photography portfolio on it for client meetings, that's literally the only advantage I can find for getting it over a new iMac. Plus, I need a new iPhone and it won't sync with my accent computer, so if I get a new desktop, and new phone is right along with it!

DH has a Kindle Fire and I loaded some photos on it and it works like gem, so I will just use that for business purposes.

Now I just have to save for the iMac/iPhone!

EDIT: I saw that you're a gamer, think about how AMAZING your games would look on a new sweet desktop!

I'd get the computer because it sounds like you need one. To me, the iPad isn't as lucrative as a fully functioning computer. Then again, this is coming from someone who also needs a new computer and doesn't have an iPad (though my brother does, it's cool.) So take it for what it's worth. :)

I think that you should go with a laptop that has pad capability.  I just saw one on the HP site and I have been drooling over it.  That way you get the best of both worlds.  I personally think you would get more use out of a desk top or a lap top, then later get the ipad or iphone.  I think they are great additions, but not great substitutions.

Since you're a gamer, go with the desktop.  I think there are a lot of people whose computing needs are easily satisfied with an ipad.  It doesn't sound like you're one of them.  If you're doing powerful stuff the desktop is the better investment.

I have a desktop, laptop, ipad2 and smartphone.... I would totally give up my desktop in a hot second if I had to choose between the two. I love my iPad and am on it right now actually! Lol

@tksjewelry:  Haha. My laptop is brand new! We just bought it in Sept/Oct!

AH! I'm so torn. I have an iTouch and I play with that baby constantly but it's an older one (the last gen without a camera). I honestly have used my desktop maybe... 4 times in the last 6 months? I am on my laptop constantly.

I was also considering the fact that we live overseas (our family is all in St. Louis) and an iPad would come in super handy on long flights, especially with the kid. Every mom I know that has one says it's a godsend.

Honestly, I may be picking iPad. Even if I get it now, I'm still getting a new desktop this year. So.... yeah.

    I agree with @NYCcaliBRIDE:

Like I said, the ipad is great for playing around on the internet and taking around but it does not replace a computer.
