Is anybody doing an iPod wedding?

The FH and myself, are thinking of just crating a playlist and hooking up an iPod, his brother in-law would be the MC of sorts.

has anybody done this? is it a terrible idea?

While some people say they have had success doing this, I have been a guest at a few Ipod weddings and they have all been disasters. There are so many things that can go wrong with it that you can easily avoid with a dj. For example, music that is great to listen to isn't always danceable. If you have a preset list, you can't switch things around and add a completely different song if what has been playing already doesn't work with the guests. A dj has a plethora of music they can quickly switch to. Also, if you have someone be in charge of the ipod, they aren't able to enjoy the reception like everyone else, whereas a dj is hired for that reason alone, so the guests can enjoy themselves.

Hey Angeleri2bee :) There are tons of other threads covering this topic, so try doing a search for those as well, you may get lots more info that way.

I am doing an ipod wedding - and by that I mean I will have my own playlists via a laptop hooked up to a sound system with somone manning it. It has the potential to go badly - but dancing is not the focus of my wedding, and most of my friends and family would just "roll with the punches" as they say. I do agree with Ember79's point about having music be "danceable" - just because a song is nice to listen to doesn't mean it will get the crowd bumpin at your wedding. So just be aware of this when choosing music.

Good luck making a choice :)

While people will try to scare you off an iPod reception, there are just as many horror stories--probably more since they're so common--about bad DJs. A DJ does not guarantee good music or lots of dancing. For those of us who don't have a lot of money, DIYing the music is great because we don't have to deal with crappy cheapo DJs. Here's a great post from A Practical Wedding about DJing your own wedding.

    What I would suggest:

    • Use a computer rather than an iPod, but have an iPod or two, and a copy of the playlist, as a backup; that way there's more room for songs and you have a Plan B in case of any problems, if there are any (honestly, how many people really think that you're incapable of working an iPod or iTunes???).
    • Have several hours worth of music over what you actually need.
    • Look up DJ playlists online and steal from them.
    • Have a good sound system. Rent one if you need to. Test it beforehand. You'll be fine.
    • Think about the 'flow' of the music--play fast, upbeat songs together, then bring it down with some slower songs, then bring it up again, etc.
    • Make it a popular mix for dancing. Cocktail hour is a good time to indulge your musical tastes, but not when people are supposed to be rocking out on the dance floor.
    • That being said, make sure that your playlist is full of music that your guests can, you know, actually dance to!

It's more work, but I think it's worth it for those of us on a tight budget. :)

We are doing an IPOD as we are restricted from having a DJ or an amplified music.  I am starting to gather songs and am hoping someone can man it just through the First dance, father/daughter dance and mother/son dance...after that I will just put it on and let it play :)

we're doing an ipod, but we're just having dinner, not dancing, so i'm not worried.

We had an iPod wedding (and dancing was the focus of the reception) and it rocked.  We had absolutely no issues and the floor was packed from the time we opened the floor until we left at 12:30 am.  I think the secret is to have a good person manning the laptop (definitely preferable to having just an iPod) and to have LOTS of music.  We played mostly motown until it got later and the families headed out at which point it got a bit harder and faster.

We had an iTunes wedding (on the laptop) and a JukeBox. We have a friend who works for a vending company so he was able to bring us a really awesome TouchTunes jukebox for free. It had something ridiculous like 30,000 songs on it. It was really fun for people to be able to pick music to dance to, everyone really fed off eachother and we had a huge dance party going.

We used the laptop for the more scripted parts of the event, like the entrance, first dance, parents dance, cake cutting, and for while we were eating appetizers and dinner. More mellow music that we like. The Juke Box was for the dance floor and my friend, the MC, introduced people to it to get the dancing started.

We didn't stress ourselves about what people picked to play on the juke box, and there was a whole variety of stuff going on. Dorky oldies like Sweet Caroline, hip hop classics like Snoop and Dr Dre, popular stuff from now like Beyonce etc. Its not really stuff we listen to on our own, but it was very fun to dance to.

It's a great idea.  Just make sure you have at least 2 back-ups!!
