texaslemon:  It’s hard to compare, because anything related to weddings from a venue automatically quadruple the price, but I rented a tent for my rehearsal dinner, it came with tables and chairs for 50 people (which, if this is just for your ceremony you probably don’t need tables) and they set up and tore it down. They charged me $250. I think $100 is on the cheap end, but $1000 is ridiculous.

I would try to at least bargain with her. Bring up again that you realize she is new, and that $100 is on the cheap side, but that you really cannot afford $1000. Make a first offer and say, I can’t pay $1000 but I’d be willing to pay $____, and see what she says. Perhaps if you’re showing that you’re at least making an effort to meet her somewhere on this, she might not be so quick to blow you off. I don’t know, it just seems like a LOT to me.

If you were having the wedding( reception) under the tent, I would say that is reasonable, but it sounds like a lot for just a backup tent in case of rain. Can you wait until it gets closer and determine if you need it based on weather predictions? If not, I would seek quotes from other vendors about the tent and either ask to rent it from another vendor, or present those quotes to your coordinator and get her to negotiate.

Our 40 foot by 60 foot tent was $1680.  So a tent that is 8 feet by 13 feet should not be nearly $1000.  It’s also not going to be big enough for you and your friends/family to stand under in the event of rain…

Our tent was 30 x 90 and it was $1500 to rent. I can’t even imagine paying $1000 for an 8×13 tent, that’s so small!  You could buy a tent that size for wayyy cheaper than that aha. I would definitely see if it’s possible to rent a tent from another vendor.

It doesn’t matter if it’s reasonable or not, that’s what you were, in fact, promised.  I have no doubt that they know exactly what was promised by the fomer coordinator and that you are not the only one in that situation.  I would be polite but  no, I would not  back down.  If necessary, go over her head and ask to speak to her boss. This time around, everything should be in writing.

texaslemon:  $1000 is insane. I just had to research this one and you can buy a 20 x 20 tent (much larger than what you need) for $288. Tell this lady you refuse to pay $1000. You were quoted $100 and don’t you dare let her intimidate you into paying more.

I think your size is off – 8′ x 13′ is smaller than my living room. If this is for your ceremony, only you and the groom, the officient and your attendants would be under the tent and that would leave all your guests outside. So if you’re looking at prices for 8′ x 13′ that’s why you’re getting ridiculous cheap prices.

My experience are that tent rentals for weddings are very expensive. I was quoted $2000 for a rainy day tent to cover a fairly small courtyard at a hotel. Here’s an example of price lists for tent and canopy rentals in my city, which is by far one of the cheaper places to live in the US. It depends on the size too, I have no idea how big of a tent you would need.

I had a 40 x 80 foot tent that was $2400, fully installed with lighting for our reception. We also had a small 20 x 20 tent that was $375 fully installed. So $1500 for 8 x 13 foot seems insane. I would look for local rental companies and see what their prices are.

Check the size… that seems outrageous for a tiny tent, normal for a decent sized tent.

texaslemon:  $1500 is a joke. When the next month’s bills come in the mail do you want to be banging your head against the wall and asking yourself if you really just blew $1500 on a tent for a few hours? Fifteen. Hundred. Dollars. That’s more than some people pay for rent each month.

I would politely insist on them honoring the commitment made to you by the previous coordinator. If she won’t, I would set up a meeting with the General Manager.
