The ring I am concidering getting is 3.4 carats in a yellow sapphire stone. I have no concept of this size, but it sounds really big... It's a oval cut, does anyone have any pictures or a way that I could get a better concept of this size?
Thanks!
Can you get on a jewelers site and look?. My engagement ring is .75 carats and is a pretty good size for me! lol
Yes, it's far too big... you should send it to me. ;)
I'm sure you know this already, but as a reminder, diamonds and sapphires have different densities and a 3.4 carat diamond will not be the same size as a 3.4 carat sapphire. You should ask the jeweler for the measurements of the surface to get an idea of how big it will be!
Also, I have a .91 carat oval (diamond)... it actually seems quite large; I think I would find 3.4 carats too large on my finger, but it depends on the setting and your tastes, of course. :)
Geeze louise! My SO's diamond he is planning to use is a little over 3 carats (it's his grandmothers diamond) And it is huge!!! I'm pretty sure with a sapphire it's going to be even BIGGER!
haha well thankyou! The jewler i'm dealing with has actually given me an option between the 3.4 and a 1.2! Do any of you have pictures of a 1.2 carat sized ring?
I have a total of .84 and I think it is a perfect size. I thought a 1 carat was too big for me. I think 3.4 carats is a lot of stone! But it depends on what you like!
I just googled this. This one is at 3 carats. Not sure if it helps you get an idea since it's not next to anything for comparison.

i second spaniel's comment - sapphires are different than diamonds.
but honestly thats huge - iwould have to see it on your finger to determine though since different stone sizes and different finger sizes make a difference if something is big or not.
if you like it go for it because its YOUR ring and you have to like it, but i dunno how much i would wear a stone like that - i live in a big city and that just screams "mug me"! in some of the places i have to go!
My diamond is 1.77....maybe that will help give you an idea! Sorry the pic stinks...it was taken on my blackberry and I was wearing black so everything looks dark!
to be honest a carat was far too large for my hand, i have a .8 diamond (a little under a carat) 3.4 is enormous, but if thats what u want, go for it, girl!
Oh, and I don't think a stone can be too big! I LOVE "jewels" and would wear 3.4 carat in a heartbeat if we could afford it! :)
This site has charts that describes the general size and weight of different gems in each cut. That may not do much to give you a visual, but it could point you in the direction of more reference pictures. :)
I have a 1.32 sapphire, and I think it is really big. If I had a 3, I don't think I would like it because it would be huge for my hand. I suggest you go to a jeweler and try different sizes and shapes on, so you know what you like.
You definitely need to try on comparable rings to see how it would look on your finger. I have a 3ct ring and was shocked at the fact that it doesn't look too big for my hand. So you don't know until you try :)
Okay, I have a 3.3 carat blue sapphire as an e-ring and while I loved it at first (and still do), it DEFINITELY screams "Mug me!" in the city (or alternatively, "I must be fake!
) It makes me really uncomfortable, and despite its beauty, this is one of the many reasons why I will be getting a totally different ring to replace it. I'd try it on and think long and hard about your comfort level with that big a stone! A big colored stone is even more eye-catching than a colorless stone, so it often makes me feel like even more of a target than if I had a similarly sized diamond (which would've definitely cost more).
You would certainly have to try it on and decide what is comfortable for you. I'm in nursing school and will be done in a few weeks - we tried stones ranging from 1-2.5 ct (diamonds, not sapphires) and I felt most comfortable with 1.5, it's large enough for my hands and my taste, but not too big. Although, even though I had a lower head put in, I think for work, depending on what unit I'm on, I may just wear my wedding band. So seriously consider when, where, and how often you will wear it and what it will come in contact with
My center stone is 2.5 cts and I love it! Looks great on and I love the symbolism of the 3 stone e ring he designed for me.
I say go for the 3.4 carat! I love sapphires!

And when I am walking to/from my car somewhere alone, I just flip it around and all anybody can see is the plain white gold band. Never worried about losing it..it's insured.
Something to also think about is getting a wedding band on the same finger if you plan to wear them both on the same hand when all is said and done. It really will depend on the design of the ring and your own comfort level though.
Something you might want to think about, depending on your lifestyle, is how HIGH the setting of a stone that large would be. I'm attaching a picture of my 2.2 carat oval cut stone, from the side. You can see that it's in a pretty simple setting that doesn't really intentionally lift it up, but the depth of the stone itself makes it a pretty 'high' ring--I take it off to sleep.

so this pic is pretty low quality, but it lets you see how big the ring's 3.3 carat is on my 6.25 size finger. Also, it's sitting a bit lopsided because it was before I got it sized, sorry. But you can tell what a beast it is. Just for reference.
@bellenga - i actually do that on the metro when i take it late at night (turning the stone around to the inside of my palm - great idea. my ring sparkles a ton and i cant go places without people commenting on it, and i dont like tempting fate! while its insured, i wanna make sure some scumbag doesnt get any ideas!
My ring is a 3.02. My ring size is 4.75. Here are some pics:

I turn my ring around too but it's pretty impossible to hide it completely. It's not like my palms are always placed flat against my chest or anything, and even then you can still see the stone sort of. I feel like whatever I do short of taking it off makes me a target.
@veganglam - wow
thats GORGEOUS!!! but i can see where you are coming from - theres no way i would wear that daily in the city. not to mention i would be worried i would hit it on stuff all the time. do sapphires scratch easily like emeralds? thats possibly a thought too if the stone is big....?
Thanks! I really do think it's gorgeous (picture does NOT do it justice), but it's just wrong for me in so many ways as an e-ring in addition to making me crime bait. I will, however, wear it often as a right-hand ring. Sapphires are a 9 in hardness and do not scratch very easily. I've worn mine for 4 months now with no problems so far (I mean, aside from intense paranoia on public transit/when I'm out and alone/etc.).
Dang Veganglam, that looks like the hope diamond (although it's a sapphire)! It's gorgeous! Mrs. Caniche, that ring is gorgeous too! Ostara, that setting is so unique! Love it!
What beautiful rings everybody has!
Mine is almost too big (in width) b/c my hand is a 5.5 ring size and when my fingers are all together, my ring spans a teeny bit wider than the width of my finger, thus it's kinda almost touching my 3rd and 5th finger, but I love it! The sides are 1.5 each.
it's so fun to have a sparkly ring! But even if all he gave me was a plain band, I'd love him still.
This might help:

however keep in mind that a one carat sapphire and a one carat diamond will not be the same size.
umm yeah its huge!!!! i have a 1.01 and it looks huge on my small fingers!!!!! if you get it lucky you!!!
3.5 carets IS BIG! What ring size are you (if you happen to know this)?
I have a 4.5 caret round cut pigeon red ruby and it is MASSIVE! It esp. looks big b/c I'm only a size 3.25 ring size (I got really slim fingers for some reason) and the diamonds around it really emphazies it's size. My girlfriends with bigger fingers have put it on and it looks very large on their fingers as well. I wish I kept the picture of it but I deleted it from my online album.
Not that I'm complaining b/c FI gave me something absolutely beautiful BUT I find it to be very impractical. I cook, clean and work out a lot so it's not really an option for me to wear my ring all of the time b/c it just gets in the way. Also find that the ring easily snags on my clothes and gets caught on things. I ride public transit to work b/c I live in the city and I feel self conscious and turn my ring the other way around so my ring doesn't catch anyone's atttention (esp since I work in a sketchy area).
Just something to think about.... you can't complain about a 3.5 caret ring though. Don't know any girl who would say no to it. :) But if you had an option to get like a 2.5 caret that would be a great size.
@veganglam--that is a lovely ring!
A few people have mentioned that a 3.4 ct sapphire and a 3.4 ct. diamond are not really the same size...does that mean that the sapphire looks bigger for its size than the diamond does?
Gorgeous rings, ladies!
@hilsy85 from what I understand carat is a measure of weight, not volume. Since a diamond is denser than a sapphire, they may weigh the same (ie be the same carat size) but the sapphire will be bigger in terms of volume. Kinda like that old brainteaser
-a pound of feathers will weigh the same as a pound of lead, but the pound of feathers will look much bigger.
Hope that convoluted explanation wasn't too confusing!
@hamster: gotcha! I think that's what I was trying to say...that a sapphire would take up more space than a diamond of the same carat weight. But your wording made a lot more sense! :)
Remember- it isn't carat size that matters- it is the millimeter size. A typical 1 carat diamond, if it is cut properly, will be 6 millimeters. 7 millimeters would be an ideal cut. (Even though they have the same weight)
However, I have come across diamonds that are over a carat in weight that are only 5 millimeters.
Good luck!
carat is weight, and as dif stones have dif weights...you should just go try on the ring!
Another difference between diamonds and sapphires are that they are cut much differently. If you want a round cut that's at the 3.5 caret size and larger the stone tends to be taller as they have larger height to width ratios than diamonds do. It's just the way the sapphire (and rubies for that matter) need to be cut in order to be sparkley and briliant.
Mmmmmm @msCaniche. I love that ring =].
Seriously, I don't think anything is "too big" unless it's just "not you". I have a 4 carat blue topaz i wear on my right hand all the time. I have 6.5 size fingers. I don't think it's too big. My left hand is almost 4 carats of diamonds...maybe too big for some, not too big for me.
Yellow sapphires are GORGEOUS by the way. I'd totally go with the 3.4 carat. I love big colorful stones.
Or, if you want a setting...i'd go with the smaller stone and flank the heck out of it with diamonds. I prefer non-solitaire diamonds personally.
@veganglam, If you are worried about drawing attention to your ring on the street and potentiall getting robbed, do what I do. When I get on the subway and walk around in the city, I turn my stone to the inside of my hand. It's a little tip my mom gave me.
