We are going to have a DOC because its required by my venue. It will just ensure that our day runs smoothly (and that our venue has a designated "go-to" person)!
If it's not in the budget to have a DOC, I would suggest putting an extremely organized family member or friend (you know the one who always makes lists & is always on time!) in charge for set-up, take down and some of the other details that a bride shouldn't have to worry about on her wedding day!
I really want a DOC but don't think we can afford one either, so I have designated a really good (and responsible) friend to be in charge of last-minute details and decisions.

Don't get me wrong- I have all sorts of love for the position a DOC plays in a wedding and by all means WANT one on our day- just not sure we'll be able to afford it!
We're on a really limited budget and springing big for the things that matter most to us- high end photography/food/music, and DIYing just about everything else.
It actually keeps me up at night though thinking about the logistics of it all (I work in the film industry and deal with logistics all the time, so I know it can be done, with the right people doing it)
So to those ladies that had DOC, was it worth it? And if you didn't/don't how are you handling it all?
