Is a one carat diamond still considered "big"?

@cwh:  It depends on where you are.  In a major city, no…they’re ‘average’ but I’m about two hours away from one and my 1ct gets quite a bit of attention.

It will also depend on your social circles as well.

Like PP said — totally depends on where you live and what in what social circles you run….it’s all a matter of perspective.  My 1ct is pretty standard size for my area / friends.

Yeah I remember when 1ct was considerd to be “big” in our area. It’s average around here now. I asked a few jewelers and they said they still sell alot of clusters though. I am in Texas BTW

Pretty average/standard here. Never really considered 1 carat big honestly.

I think its big, but then again I live in a smaller farming community. I feel it also depends on the size of your finger. The smaller the size, the bigger it will look.

@cwh:  Where I am it would be big! But I’m in the country.

@cwh:  When I got married (30 years ago), a half carat diamond was considered large, so I consider a one carat diamond to be extra large!

I live around DC and I’d say 1 carat is pretty standard. As times are changing 1 carat used to be the “ideal carat weight” but I think now it’s 1.5.

@cwh: I think they’re “normal” but I’m also in a big city. 2-3 ct rings are large but are also likely to be diamond sims or not the quality I prefer. I personally don’t care about big vs standard vs small because I’m happy with what I have.

I think a 1 carat single stone is a nice size, and it’s fairly common where I live.  However, I would consider a 1 TCW ring with a .5 carat center stone to be very small.  I guess when I talk about the number of carats in a ring, I measure size by the center stone, not the sum of a bunch of tiny stones.

Mine is 1.5 total with a .75 center stone. I have a small finger 5.5 and anything larger would be overwhelming.

This is mine with my wedding band. I get comments frequently about it. it gets in the way sometimes and I have scratched myself and my fiancé with it on more than one occasion

I think sometimes what you see on the bee is skewed from reality. The site is not an accurate representation of what is the norm. Not every bride with diamonds of all sizes are on this site – there’s only a fraction here hence the skewed representation. Most the rings I see here are huge so 1ct on this site is probably small to average. To me, a carat is big but I also feel like my own .5ct is big and I get a lot of comments on it being a “rock” – I never realized it was considered small til I found this site but in everyday life people are genuinely impressed and that’s not to say I haven’t seen anything bigger (my mum has over a carat). This is all just my opinion; I may be wrong 🙂

This is my ring set. It is 1 ct total. I still get many stares even though I live in a large city.

I’d say average around here.
