Are you thinking of styling your hair like the model? I think that's an informal enough updo :)
@daydreamwanderer: I tend to avoid hairstyles like that because they make me look like a librarian (I have glasses). I was considering her hairstyle, but that's very similar to what I'm already doing for our ceremony and I wanted something a bit different.
Do whatever makes you feel best. You're the bride, it's your day, do what you want. No one is going to judge you for having a too "formal" hairdo on your big day.
@PinkPinstripes: It's more or less my own level of comfort; I wouldn't be bothered by what others think if I weren't already second-guessing an updo for the level of formality, if that makes sense.
I voted yes, don't wear your hair up by accident. I read it as "Yes, wear your hair up". I think its your wedding and you're supposed to be formal!! I don't think it would look out of place at all. So I meant to vote "Not at all, it's your wedding..."
@Krises: I'm trying to gauge how to do it based on the level of formality, though. It's a very, very casual affair, start to finish (nice casual dresses or blouse/pants combos for ladies, just a nice shirt and slacks for men but nothing too fancy), so I don't want to look over-the-top by comparison. :)
I think since you're the bride that you should be the one element that is not too casual. Your dress is beautiful, and it will showcase a lot of your upper chest and shoulders, but if you wear your hair long it will hide all that. My first reaction would be, "Look how gorgeous and elegant she is" and not "Her hairstyle is way too formal for this event." Go for it!
Ok, the hunt is now on for some pretty updo hairstyles.....I'll be back!
@daydreamwanderer: That's very cute...I wonder if it might be a little too much hair around the face, though. Is there a photo of the back?
And yes, my hair is fairly long (about 3-4 inches below the shoulder) and curly/wavy. :)

I really love the look of one side or partial up styles :) but that's just me!
You could always do bow-hair ;)

I am really trying to avoid half-up/half-down styles, but I love that bow hair, no lie. ;P
No, I didn't see a picture of the back, sorry :/
I just googled "long wavy hairstyle updo" and that was one that I liked.
It's from here: http://www.celebrity-hair-styles-magazine.com/celebrity-updo-hairstyles-2-14.html
Are you getting your hair done professionally? By a friend? or DIYing? You could very easily modify how much is up or down - I just love the blown out look with all that volume!
I think something like this could work rather well:
EDIT: I'm having my hair done at a salon (ouch, my wallet!).
Have you picked a salon? See if they'll do a trial run for free/discounted! I didn't really know what I wanted until I talked with my stylist, she started to put it up, and I could be like, "Okay, this what I like, this is what I don't" and she was able to help me define what I really wanted. :)
@daydreamwanderer: They told me it'd be $85-90 for the hair and makeup...not sure if that's the trial run plus the day-of or not. I hope it covers both, because that is crazy-expensive!
I'm really loving the chignon hairstyles because they look more retro and glamorous, more fitting with your dress and theme. They aren't as severe as most of the wedding updos I found (which kind of scream prom to me).
I'm not that computer savvy, so a bunch of the pics that I downloaded to put on here aren't working now
, but hopefully these will show up. Just google "chignon" and you'll be amazed at all the gorgeous looks that will work beautifully with your thick, wavy hair. I really like that last pic you posted!
@AudzinLuv: I really like that one, too! I'm sure the stylist could loosen it up a little to work with my hair's texture.
Just an open question to anyone who knows the answer...was your hair/makeup trial included in your day-of price, or was it a totally separate charge?
I really like this one but maybe without the tropical flower if it doesn't fit with theme/colors
.

@Statutory Grape: Sorry for the double post but to answer your second question - most places I have priced out do not include trial price. Sometimes they charge you the same as the wedding updo sometimes they make it half - it depends.
@afuturemrsl: Holy shit, man. I'm going to have to call them tomorrow and see...all I wanted for a makeup trial was to see if they could cover my tattoo with airbrush, and they're charging $25 extra just for airbrushing. Eek. I can't afford to drop more than I spent on my dress on hair and makeup.
@afuturemrsl: I think that might work better for a beach wedding or something, but it's still a lovely style!
I think it would be hard for your hair to make you look rediculous, especially in that dress! I've heard that it's best to just go with what you're comfortable with. I like the idea of that. I don't want to be pulling and picking at a possibly uncomfortable hair style that I'm not used to, so I'll be going with a slightly dressed-up version of the way I just normally wear my hair most of the time. I think, with that dress, just about any hairstyle (other than maybe a mohawk) would look great.
Did I mention I absolutely love your dress?!? :D
@ScooterBride: Thanks for the reassurance. :) And thanks--I love it, too! I haven't seen the actual dress yet (it ships on November 10th) but I am hoping it looks good in green. :)

I'm wondering if an updo is too formal for our early afternoon, VERY casual lunch reception. I'm still having my hair and makeup done and am wearing the dress I ordered for our original date, but I don't want to look too overdone or anything like that. I'm dressing up my ceremony outfit (a nice sweater and skirt) with a loose updo, but was thinking of dressing my dress (hah, that sounds silly!) down by having my hair down but still styled nicely.
Here's a picture of the style my dress is based on; however, it will be quite a bit shorter (hitting the bottom of my knee) and dark green. I'm also looking for some less formal updos (avoiding the traditional half-up, half-down style as I am not a big fan).
We reserved a room in the restaurant but it's still a public space and I do not want to look ridiculous! FH is wearing a nice black suit and a tie. I don't want to look TOO formal.
