ours actually rounded out @ about $7K (inc, honeymoon) but with wedding gifts and security deposit being refunded, plus random things being sold, we will have spent about $2k.
yes, my wedding is pretty much 2K. it's a major challenge, but it forces me to find out what's the most important to me....it helps to have connections;)
ive got a few good connections, tux, cake, photographer, but still i think im gonna go over it. any suggestions?
I found super cheap things by RESEARCHING. Found my centerpieces in Weddingbee's Classifieds. Found and bought SUPER cheap chair covers through Craig's List. Found and bought vases and little stuff on dollartree.com. I am using the Michael's 40% off coupons to purchase invitations. I am also obsessed with origami and I am folding paper flowers for my entire reception for less than $20!
We spent around $2000 for our wedding. We had a very small wedding, with a small reception, no wedding party and then a reception in my parents' home town that we helped pay for. We started out planning a big wedding, but a lot of things changed and we ended up deciding we'd rather save the money, especially because my family couldn't come to the wedding anyway, so having a big to-do didn't make sense. It was nice to keep it small. It kept the focus on my husband and me. We had friends do the photography and women from the church made food. I wore my mother's dress and she altered it for me.
No. Originally we did want that but we are going to end at aboout 6K at the MOST. The only reason this went up is because of the guest list and the reception. Guest list: less than 75. Reception: lasting 4 hours. Chapel: 1 hour. It CAN be done, but honestly? look at no wedding party, a smaller guest list, CHEAP food, no alcohol, i pod music and the frivelous things like center pieces take a back seat. I know that im not doing a lot of floral so that cut my cost a LOT. good luck and i know you can have a gorgeous wedding for under 2k and the only reason i didnt is bc people offered to help but it sounds like you have connectiions so youre probably more set to go than a lot of people are.
I agree with the researching. I have been working on the reception side of things a lot lately and found a great website for catering stuff, such as places, napkins, and so forth. I have yet to find another place where I can get over 1000 napkins for less than $30. And they send free samples of anything that fits in a flat env. or saples of other stuff for a shipping fee.. the site is:

Good luck planning ladies!
i am hoping mine will be around 2k....my dress was only $278 and my BM dresses were only $35 total for all 3!! so i think i am on the right track so far? I am doing pretty much everything myself, and we are BBQing so that should be about 2-300 for 100+ people...my ceremony/reception is in my FI grandparents backyard so that was free, and we are having a girlfriend who was a photography major in college do our pictures for free too! Then we are doing a honeymoon registry and using whatever we get to plan our trip
Mine was! I came in at 1400 for my wedding. I had been shooting for $1000. My dress was about $200, and other things we either skimped on, got on sale, or skipped all together. I am very happy with choosing to spend this little. It's good to enter a marriage debt free (and with a little spending money!)
Check out my recaps and posts if you want details on my day.
Good posts- I wasn't sure where to start, either. We're trying to keep it on the low-low, too. Keep us updated!
I'm not but it can be done! Keep things simple, ask for friends help, do most things as DIY. My brother did it under 2k.
im about $2000 to 2500 and is really a challenge... but im sure it will be rewarding at the end all the work and headache... the worst is the im planning form Massachusetts to Puerto Rico. im doing a lot of stuff my self. i choose to do a fun and simple wedding... im not hiring a photographer, i will have friends taking pic for us. the music will be done by a friend and his ipod. the cake my mom will make it. im buying the flowers by bulk and making the centerpieces, bought the bases in the dollar store. renting the tablecloths and buying the runners because is cheaper. and if you need any other advice let me know
Oh my isn't is so painful having such a low-budget! I had originally hoped for 5k, but that's not happening.
If you included rings and honeymoon, it's over 2k...
But he bought my ring and put it on credit and it s $2700. But when I buy his wedding band, I don't plan on paying much.
honestly it comes down to not being able to ask people to help. My grandma is making my cake, my sis in law owns her own photography business, my mom's friend does hair, my brother offered to pay for our flowers, we might have the wedding in my sister's church (where her husband is the pastor!), and a family friend/pastor is doing the ceremony... Plus I have several friends willing to help with things like making invitations (store bought paper and making a date of making them with your bridesmaids is a special time together!), dress shopping, and basically anything I ask of them!
I couldn't ask for a better support system... my daddy, even though he just got a pay cut at work, also offered to pay for part of my dream dress so that it would fit my budget...aww!!
I too have a $2000 budget that I am probably going to go over a little. Good news is that the $2000 dollars is coming from my parents and doesn't include what I plan to spend myself. I plan on diy decor, borrowing things like clear christmas lights from family, having co-workers and friends help out with food, etc. I have bought a lot on Ebay also. The one thing I just can't seam to find as cheap as I want at this point is tablecloths, I absolutely refuse to do plastic. I am planning on buying the tablecloths, found white ones for $6 each but that still adds up when you have 18 tables to cover so I am going to try to negotiate that price, what's the worst they could say? BTW, the tablecloths are currently at Big Lots, they sometimes have good deals on things you wouldn't think about needing. Good luck on sticking to your budget.
@Anj, so you have a thrift store near you - like a salvation army or goodwill? I have found some awesome tablecloths and lace there. I plan to use bolts of lace for my tablecloths, sticking to my theme of vintage and DIY-inspired.
What DIY projects are you planning on doing?! I love sharing things like this!
My budget is like yours... but unfortunately my parents weren't able to contribute. Stupid economy :(
I know we are all thrifty wedding planners just wondering if anyone has purchased their wedding dress from bravobride?
My budget is around $8000, but I've really enjoyed reading this blog about a $2000 wedding: http://2000dollarwedding.com/ Her wedding was a while ago (though the post-wedding posts are still good!) so you may have to go into the archives to see more wedding related stuff... It's totally possible to pull of and still have a wonderful event!
@sept2610-I guess I should check out some of the smaller bridal stores around town. Everytime I think about dress shopping I get nervous though. :) Just nervous I will break under pressure and blow my budget that I set for my dress. I am hoping to stay under 150. Sometimes when people hear that they dont necessarily want to help you plus I have been thinking I want more of a knee length dress now.
@greenleafmountain- I definitely love the $2000 blog too. It was obvious they put a lot of work into it.
my budget is very close, its 3k, but i do agree that research is the way to go! there's this place in denver, called stonebrook manor, that's doing this thing called nearly free tuedays reception. all i had to pay was 750 for the non refundable deposit, which basically pays the people that work there for the night. yes, its on a tuesday, but that is worth 4k, can't turn down something that kickass. i did upgrades, like the cake, and tons of other stuff, which is costing me 2k, and then i have 1k left to pay for a photographer, flowers, anything that isn't included in the package at my location, but its still really hard to stay at this budget, especially when 99% of the money is coming from my pocket. the only thing that isn't is my dress, thank god, cause in the end, that dress is like 2500....which is most of my own budget, i would have ended up with something i settled for, but my mom bought my dress.
I'm trying to stay as close to $2K as I can as well. I have no money saved up and no family can contribute. I decided to have under 75 people, with no wedding party and only cake and non- alcoholic drinks! I hope I can do it! The only thing so far for me that is tough it the Photography, the ones I have come across so far are all about $1K. Ugh, my wedding won't even be that long, so I just need to keep searching. I hope you all keep updating here. I think it will help alot!
Yep, http://2000dollarwedding.com was the start of my obsession with wedding blogs. It's really great for inspiration! Check out her wedding dress, which was a plain white sundress she got a Target, I think, and embroidered the story of their relationship on.. So cute!!
I was trying for $2000, but I think it will be closer to $2300-2500. We're doing hors d'ourves, dessert, and drinks rather than a sit-down dinner, and will probably use small potted plants instead of floral arrangements at the reception. And we've limited the bridal party to my sister and his best friend, both of whom will just wear whatever they want to. It also helps that we're getting married on a Thursday! A friend has very nicely agreed to do the photography, and we're following the advice of many bees and going with an ipod instead of a DJ.
@sweetnote--I had the same problem dress shopping! At first my dress budget was $400, and I found a couple in that range that were nice, but not really me. So in the 2nd store I went to, I told the owner (who was the only person there that day) that I was looking for something relatively simple and asked if they had any bridesmaid dresses in white. She looked horrified. I was pointing to the giant rack of cute looking (to me, at least) bridesmaid dresses, and she said, "OH NO!!! You know who wears those dresses? Girls graduating from private high schools!" I did not go to a private high school, so I'm not sure what she meant by that, but I thought it was a snooty comment either way. So I tried on a bunch of others she made me try on, and didn't like any, and was about to leave when she brought out 2 last dresses, which she called "destination wedding dresses." I liked one of them a lot, and by this point I had decided that I really wanted a tea length dress (I have never, ever, looked good in long dresses, so it finally occurred to me that I should probably not feel obligated to wear one to my wedding). She said it could be altered to tea length. And it turns out it was only $164! Before agreeing to buy it, I went home and looked up the maker online, and guess what? It was a bridesmaid dress! (That line doesn't even include wedding dresses.) I felt totally vindicated :) The best part is that when I went in the next day, I pretended not to realize it was a bridemaid dress, and she still acted like it was a "real" wedding gown (not a private-high-school-esque dress), so she only charged a 50% deposit (I would have had to pay for a "bridesmaid" dress in full). Hooray!!
One option you might consider is getting married at a scenic B&B (this is what we are doing). If you have family members who are willing to rent out a room, you can have the whole place to yourself--You have the ceremony outside and have a picnic catered and then spend the evening visiting with everyone and eat breakfast together the next morning. It's a nice inexpensive way to extend your wedding without having to have a reception.
$2,000 is hard and you're going to have to be really creative to make it happen.
@weebirdy- What a great save! I am also wanting to get a tea-length wedding dress. I have really been focusing on researching and have found 5 dresses that I love but they are all online. :) My FI doesnt think that we will be able to stay at the budget that I set. However, I am one of those brides that just cant see herself spending a large amount of money when we have a child. I am still researching like crazy right now. I have an idea on everything I want to do the only thing I am worried about right now is the caterer. I know the reception is a big chunk of the finances. :(
We're spending around $4000. It's still going to be a pretty large wedding (at least by my standards!): five groomsmen, five bridesmaids, around 130 guests. We've definitely been able to cut corners by using the talents of people we know. My best friend's dad is roasting a pig for the reception and we will provide all of the side dishes, we're doing a pie buffet instead of a cake (with pies baked by our lovely family and friends!), our ceremony music will be provided by a motley crew of musician friends, and we have friends who are into screenprinting who will be doing our invitations.
I also am letting the ladies in the bridal party pick their own dresses, or wear one that they already own. This has the double bonus of everyone looking awesome and not trying to cram their many body types into one style of over priced dress.
$2000 seems tough, even for the most budget concious. Sara and Matt over at 2000dollarwedding.com pulled it off beautifully, though. If you're super committed to $2000, I firmly feel it can be done!
I've definitely honed my bargaining skills for the areas of the wedding where connections don't help. :)
Oh wow! Here's what i get for not being around lately! I bought my dress...$184 on davidsbridal.com and i absolutly adore it! FIs suit was 70ish bucks and we bought 7 packs of 72 foot christmas lights for 12 bucks to decorate my deck! i'm diying a lot, like our arch and stuff, and Im buying gerbera daisies off of fiftyflowers and thats the only flowers im using. We found a bunch of old mason jars for free and our local high school is letting us use their really nice chairs! Score! We are borrowing tables from family. It's coming together..slowly but surely and i think we will be under budget!
Oh i have another update! I bought our rings for 176! Titanium bands with blue or green on the inside(his blue, mine green) I wanted a cheapy band for mine cause I have a set already and he wanted a cheapy to because he will hardly get to wear it because of work! so yay!
mine is!! and im having a hard time with flowers and centerpieces, and table and chairs!!!!! i have everything else so far!!! my dress was 199, my FI and his GM are wearing dark jeans and a button up and their cowboy hats and boots, my BM wanted to get their own dreeses and they picked ones that were 115 so thats not my expense. Im paying for it by myself with my FI helping of course but my parents arent able to help any. Does anyone know where to get cheap rentals on chairs or tables. Im looking at about 800 just for that!!!!
@kb112022- how did you manage the bridesmaid dresses for only $35?!?!
i also want to know how you got the bm dresses for so cheap! I paid 50 for each of my girls dresses (they can't get off their asses to get their own dresses, so i went and bought them myself. so i know they are what i want and they are paying me back for the dresses)
I have found my place on the board!
You ladies have some great ideas and inspire me that yes IT CAN BE DONE :)
I agree with research, research, research.
There is the 2,000 dollar wedding and a practical wedding.
love, love both of these!
The most favorite of my ideas to save a ton is to GROW MY OWN FLOWERS!
I am lucky, my FMIL has a beautiful perennial garden already and I am growing many easy-cut annuals including zinnias and sunflowers.
I'm getting a moissanite ring and his is titanium (etsy, $12.99!)
I have been LUCKY with our venue... $350 from 8 am to 10 pm at a restored barn in a county park.
also buying a huge roll of kraft paper instead of linens to cover the tables. will have crayons in glass jars on the tables to write on!
mason jars and candles.
we are also roasting a whole hog and our aunts are doing all the side dishes.

Oh My Gosh! That idea with the kraft paper and crayons is awesome! It reminded me of the Italian restaurant Tomato Street! I absolutely love going there to color on the tables! haha It's a brilliant idea! I think I will end up doing that. So much more fun then linens! and much cheaper. :)
@stbMohror
Thank you!!! It was like a revelation when I thought of it, haha!
eBay has cheap "lot" crayons, too! Keep an eye out and I'm sure you will find a good deal.
@gocubbies
The kraft paper is such a great idea! I bet people will leave awesome messages/art with the crayons. Fantastic!
Also, what side dishes are you doing to go with the hog? We're having a hog roast, and I can't decide what to do for sides to save my life.
Our budget is close to 2000 - It will probably end up more like 2500-2700. I think it is totally doable - I haven't started looking for a dress yet - but I just want something super simple. That is what I am most nervous about..
My FMIL's dad is a pastor - so we have a free church site as well as a free officiant as he will me marrying us.
We plan to use tealights and mason jars -
I am making all the decor from folded paper of vintage books and rolled up paper(think anthropologie window)..
We are also exploring the idea of having a baked potato bar for our 175 to 200 person reception - it is easy and cheap.
Then just have some family members make a few cakes and have a cake bar instead of one huge wedding cake.
Of course - we will have an ipod reception - No DJ
And we dont drink - so no $ for alcohol.
I think our largest cost will be our attire and postage.
I am so excited - It will be so unique.
Yes! 2k or less. Haven't started spending yet...have to see what is really important. I know that what really matters is our venue, having a nice family dinner at one big table for our reception and the wedding license. Plus I would like an opal ring. Best of luck to you! I plan to send save the dates only with our website address for RSVP, directions, accomodations, addresses, etc. I love paper goods but also love our planet...and know we will be able to have money for more important things if we don't do three or four pieces of stationary.

Im just wondering if anyone was trying to pull their wedding off for this cheap or already have done it for this cheap..anybody?
