So - I got my dress in this weekend, and I love it.. but let me tell you... I was feeling the heat! This thing must be 15 pounds of lace, crinoline and polyester! I don't remember it being so heavy in the store, and I'm starting to worry that my beautiful outdoor wedding is going to be like standing in a broiler! Please pray for me that it's 70 degrees that day, and not 95... My mom keeps telling me that all brides suffer in a hot dress... I guess I want to know if that's true! Anybody else got a toasty dress??
Yes my dress! its sooo heavy I better not get red in the cheeks haha. Oh and 70 degrees? in LA! in aug? I'll keep you in my prayers...
Yes my dress was super hot. Luckily my wedding was in October in MN. But I was still hot sometimes.
@Sep, no THANK GOD, I am getting married in Northern California off the coast, where it is always MUCH MUCH cooler.... But you never know, it could be a weird, hot day!!! I am glad I'm not gonna be the only sweatin' bride...!
My dress is not toooo bad---but I sure did try on a bunch that made me go "owww!". Super hot and heavy! I wish you girls luck! I HATE being too warm, I get uber cranky. ;)
Haha the title of this thread cracked me up. Yes, my dress weighs a TON. I am going to have the muscles of a weightlifter by the morning after my wedding jut because I'm going to get a workout dancing in that dress at my reception! One of the reasons I love my dress so much is that it's got such a complicated interior, but the boning, hoop, ten thousand crinolines, and eighteen million yards of silk make it HEEEEAAAAVY. Thank goodness we're having a January wedding in New York!
Oh so napa valley! love it there Im not sure how familiar you are with the weather there but heres a link just in case http://www.bestinsonoma.com/weather.html ...
to the OP, I still think you have a lot of courage to wear a heavy dress in mid-August! I was in Napa last year at the same time of your wedding this year (August 2-7) and was sweating my balls off constantly while outside. No, it wasn't as hot as anywhere further south, but I was still feeling the early onset of heatstroke every day in just shorts and a tank! I think it was a lot less humid than I'm used to, maybe?
@Vegan---Oh my! I had no idea you were rockin' a pair! You learn something new everyday here at the bee! ;)
Haha oh god. I'm tired and forgot to censor myself here on the bee. Fail.
Alas, you didn't learn something new today, I'm only sporting a pair when it's apt for me to say so in the context of a crude metaphor. Eep.
When we got our dresses, we initially worried that they wouldn't be warm enough for Massachusetts in October, since mine was strapless and NotFroofy's was sleeveless. We thought about looking for a wrap or something for warmth. However, a friend came by one day to take pictures of us in our dresses. We discovered that even without sleeves, we were both getting quite warm in all that fabric.
Thanks for the laughs Veganglam and VirginiaMarie! Please don't censor--It's much more entertaining this way.
And Sweatheartdealer, how about one of those misting fans, and some frozen margaritas? That might do the trick, or at least make it easier to ignore the non-sexy heat.
Well that's way less exciting than I originally thought....;) j/k. Side note: I say that all the time, and sometimes I wonder: how HOT is ball "hot"? Then I cringe and thank God that I'm a woman.
hahaha... you guys are too funny :P
my dress is uber heavy... but that aint going to stop me from hitting that dance floor (and most likely by hitting, I mean falling flat on my face from so much fabric)
@ccranetobe, I have two left feet--and a wife who was wearing her own uber-heavy dress. It is a miracle that neither of us ended up on the floor that night!
Too funny. And I'm happy to know that I won't be the only 2-left-footed one worried about hitting the floor, although I won't even have the heavy dress excuse.
VirginiaMarie, I would have asked on the other thread, but it closed--did the stage collapse as you were parting the sea? :)
I'm sorry, I'm no help on the original question. I hope the venue has air conditioning!
@Weebirdy-hahah no! I was the worst Moses ever and forgot most of my lines. But you would too if you were ELEVEN years old, starting puberty and got casted as Moses, a man, and had to wear a fake beard in front of your whole class. Let's hear it for the awkward years!
@SweetheartDealer--Have you considered having a small white fan near your head table? At least it would keep the air moving and if the day is that brutal, I'm sure it could take the edge off. No one would even notice it!
@VirginiaMarie Ahhh i wanted to say something too on that thread when i seen moses I literally laughed out loud i dont think i have ever done that about anything on the bee...I played baby jesus when i was....well a baby....good times!
@Virginia and Sep Queen--I got drafted as Mary in a Christmas pageant in my awkward tween years. But at least nothing collapsed on me.
@ Sweetheartdealer: Yes, a fan on the table! Also, if it gets super hot, do you have anything extra you can take off during the reception, especially if you'll be dancing a lot? Nothing scandalous, of course, but maybe a slip or extra petticoat or anything? I know that's grasping at straws, but it might help. And yikes, I'm so sorry, I just realized I misspelled "sweet" in my first post. I think it's a combination of my brain not working today and all this talk of hotness. And now it won't let me edit it. Sorry!
My dress is super hot as well. I actually thought that all the sweating that happened everytime I put it on was just because I was nervous but I guess it's just because it's so hot. I feel like I have to towel off after everytime I try it on. I actually felt bad for the woman who pinned me for my alterations because I was sweating like a pig and she practically had her head in my armpit. For my sister's late June outdoor wedding, I bought her a pair of moisture-wicking panties from VS to wear; as a gift I am looking for some for myself now, too. Might be a good idea so you don't have a sweaty butt.
I hadn't really thought of that, but I am having a July wedding and am finding myself drawn toward more a-line/ballgown dresses...so I will probably be waaay too warm as well. Maybe I need to have my bridemaids carry around little fans for me! Hehe. :)
My dress was really hot when I tried it on in the store, but I'm crossing my fingers that when it comes in in the correct size (the sample was small) it will have a little more breathing room, you know?
I wore a Sabelle for an outdoor wedding in Nor Cal in early October and it was very cool that day, which turned out good, I wasn't cold for sure in my dress!
haaaaahaaaaaa... best replies ever!!
To all who commented about a fan.. GOOD IDEA!!
And moisture wicking panties?! BRILLIANT! I'm definitely gonna be rockin' some sweaty arse crack. Ugh. So elegant and lady like!
I wish I had considered the dress/heat/weight issue more in the store, but when you find "the one", you find "the one!"!!
Yeah.... mine is kind of hot...
One of my friend's DOC's brought her one of those little battery operated fans for the reception. She was too cute, rocking out on the dance floor holding her little fan!
And does the phrase "moisture wicking panties" make anyone else cringe? :) :) :)
YES. I started to get sweaty during the fitting, and I was just standing there! I can't imagine how it's going to feel after dancing all night. What if the lining is stuck to me and I can't pull it up to use the bathroom?!
"Panties" in general makes me cringe! I say underwear. I will be wearing cotton ones for sure.
My friend had a heavy satin/beaded dress for her wedding in July. She took out a few layers of crinoline and wore a hoop skirt under her dress so that she could have a little ventilation under there. Seemed to work out pretty well.
ME - I didn't think it would be but my legs and back sweat like crazy in the store trying it on!
In August in Ontario when it is humid and over 30 degrees C I will be soooo hot!
I actually had one dress that I got off of e-bay that I really loved but when I wore it around the apartment I would get SWEATY gross, like dripping. I kept trying it on on different days in different temperatures, but no matter what I got sweaty even if I was just standing around. I am crazy sensitive to temperature so I decided that I had to find a different dress that wasn't so warm. The one I have now is chiffon, and even it was pretty warm when I had it on for alterations, so I can't imagine how bad the first one would have been.
Oh I agree, the phrase sounds nasty too, but that was exactly what they were called. Wanted to keep it real.
I'm always on the hotter side (heat wise)...I'm a sweaty person, always from my forehead...I'm so worried my hair is going to be stuck to my head!!! My dress isn't that hot...but I think it's the fact that there's no breathing room when your dress goes straight to the floor! Our wedding is outside in July...I'm praying for a sunny...yet breezy day!
Well ladies... I hope we all have a nice breeze on our wedding day!!
ouch. my final decision between 2 dresses that I loved loved LOVED came down to cancelling out the Pronovias dress because it was too heavy...As a matter of fact, I was told pretty bluntly that I might pass out during our 30 min outdoor ceremony if I do go with it... eee! I am hoping you have a beautiful 70 degree wedding day! :)
Oh my gosh!
My dress is so heavy and hot, I get sweaty just trying it on! Plus... my wedding is in WISCONSIN! In July! I swear it is the hottest place on earth come summer. AND humid. At least I get to cool off in the convertible on the way to the reception!
mine is too, and kind of itchy on the shoulders :(
i had some second thoughts since it is in July. i was hell-bent on NOT having strapless (mostly because almost everyone else has it) and i love the look of my cap-sleeve lace dress...BUT my dress almost looks and feels more like a fall or even winter dress than summer!
i figure by that time, who cares!
HAHA this post is awesome!!! I also have a very hot dress... and I found that wearing ahoop crinoline underneath it made a HUGE difference, since the air was able to get up and circulate a bit when I was walking or moving. I'm having an early October wedding, so I'm praying for sunny but cool :) I don't do well in heat AT ALL!!!! I either pass out, or become a super crank!!!
I remember my dress being kind of heavy also... which is the only reason why I'm excited about our November wedding date. I feel like I'm still going to be boiling at the reception though!
Yes, I have a large pick-up ballgown type dress from David's Bridal that I am going to be wearing in less than 2 weeks. While it is cooler on top--with a sweetheart-style strapless bodice, the bottom is like a heavy Cinderella-style tent! I definitely understand your fears as mine is an outdoor wedding also. I will keep my fingers crossed for a nice 70 degree day for you. Will you have any ice/coolers?
Mine is a fitted satin ballgown, so it's warm just having it on inside for like 10 minutes. Now we just have switched our plans to have a desination wedding in Puerto Rico, so now I am worrying about the same thing!!!
