My dress was heavy and long as well. I opted for a sheath wedding gown (no train) as my 2nd dress though.
I got one! My wedding dress is HUGE and I don't want to destroy it on the dance floor.
I thought about it but changed my mind. The dress I bought isn't super heavy, but at the end of the day I figured I could wear a short white dress any other day in my life - this was the one time I'd be wearing a wedding dress, and by god, I'm going to milk this opportunity as much as possible.
I really considered and and I still am.. mmm, I dunno!!
I cant justify spending more money.. I went over budget on my gown.. sometimes I think i should suck it up and wear it all night, even though its super heavy. Im never going to wear it again and i think its beautiful so I may as well.
I will only be wearing my wedding dress but I have to change before I leave otherwise my ball gown will be travelling with us on a cruise ship... So I do have a 2nd dress but it's a grand exit short white dress...
Here it is:
to dress it up I added a little jacket that matches my wedding shoes so perfectly!
I just cannot bring myself to spend the extra money on it. It will be hard enough for me to spend 1K or more on a dress so you better believe I will be wearing it for as long as I possibly can! :)
I found a dress that is grey on the bottom (fitted) with a flowy top that is white. I will most likely change for the last hour of the reception, and to leave the venue in. My FI wil be wearing gray slacks with a white shirt and I think it will be cute to have pics of us in matching clothes that isn't so "bridal"
I only spent $50 on it!
@HappilyEverAfter54: That ensemble you've put together is beautiful! Love the shrug, shoes and necklace and the neckline of your getaway dress!
I'm not going to change for the reception but I will for the send off since I dont' want to take my dress to the hotel. Here it is from American Eagle
For me, I want to wear my wedding dress as long as possible and that includes wearing it to our afterparty at the bar....milk it for all it's worth!
@Brielle: thank you! The necklace part is actually part of the dress... it's a halter top. I figured that would be nice so I could avoid having to change jewlery (because I want photos as we exit) this way I can take the jewelry off and have a more relaxed but still elegant look.
I couldn't decide which dress to pick so I bought both a long and a short one figuring I could use the short one as a reception dress.. :) here's a pic of the short one:
I did. Actually my reception just is a wedding dress but more flowy,
This is my ceremony dress:
and this is my reception dress:

Thinking of it bc my dress is lace but I doubt I will. I want to be a beaming bride in that gown all night! I am wearing Allure 8764:)
I didn't vote, but I am wearing my dress for the whole reception. However, we are also throwing an after party (not at the reception site), and I will have a cute, short, cocktail dress for that!
I am thinking about wearing a reception dress after the first dances, but it is another wedding dress.
My mother said she thinks I should change into a 2nd dress but I barely have enough money to afford all these other dresses (wedding dress, rehearsal dinner dress, bridal shower dress, bachelorette party dress). Ive bought my wedding dress and another white cocktail dress (dont know if Im wearing that one to my bridal shower or rehearsal dinner). My train is VERY long but I didnt buy that dress to wear for an hr. I want to feel like a bride for as long as I can. I only have 4 hours-- thats it!!!!!
Yup, I'm doing this dress with this sash for the last 2 hours of our 6 hours reception. I love it because i can wear both things later and they are combined under $200. The dress is from J.crew on sale and the sash is from etsy.

It's definitely not something I would do. Since my ceremony is only about 15 minutes, I made sure to choose a dress that would be appropriate to wear for the entire evening. What gets me is that it seems like the people who kind of need a separate dress because their wedding dress is so elaborate and heavy are the very people who--because their dresses are elaborate and heavy--spent a LOT of money on their wedding dress, and I can't imagine spending many thousands on a dress I won't wear the entire evening. But, hey, if you chose one of those dresses and also want to be able to move around a lot, then a second dress could be right for you; I just prefer to make sure such a thing is not necessary.
im not planning on it because my dress isnt going to be very big/heavy/dramatic so i'll be fine to wear it all night long. BUT if its in budget and your first dress is not something you'd feel comfortable in for hours (which it sounds like its not), then id get a second dress!
I've gone back and forth on this one. I absolutely LOVE my dress, but it's crazy heavy and I'm not sure even with a bustle that I'll be able to carry it around all night. Right now I'm in the "only wearing one dress" camp, but we'll see if that changes haha.

By second dress, I mean a white, short, cocktail/party dress for after dinner and the first dance etc, for when the party really gets going and all the dancing starts. My dress is really heavy and hot and I am considering getting a second dress which is short, fun, flirty and what I would typically wear out clubbing. Is anyone else doing this? Do you think its a good idea or no? My fi and I might actually hit the clubs afterwards with our friends because a lot of them are from out of town so I think it would tie in well!
