Is anyone working a second job (part-time) for the wedding? Or planning to?

So, I am a poor grad student bride-to-be with champagne taste on a beer budget. Well, not even beer! Let's say it's a malt liquor budget! (lol) I have been applying to part-time jobs in retail so that I can bring in a little income for the wedding, but nothing's come up, yet.

Are any of you ladies working a part-time job (in addition to your main money making job) for the wedding? Where are you working? Are you getting any bonus perks (discounts, freebies, etc.) from your part-time job that you'll use for your wedding?

(ETA: I don't work full-time because I am full-time student and part-time teacher. My income comes from an assistantship).

(Not quite related, but filling out these online applications is kind of a pain in the a#*! lol)

I am working part-time right now, but it's not enough hours to pay bills and put money aside for the wedding.  If a full-time position doesn't open up in the next few months, I plan to work two jobs until I am offered or am able to work full-time.

I am a unit secretary at a psychiatric hospital.  It's very interesting.

My employee discounts includes a few awesome things I could use towards the wedding.  IE: shoes.com.   How awesome is that?! :)

I can also get up to 3 nights free stay at Disney World.

I actually got a part-time job and realized I was making nothing. Since I wasn't home to cook at night DH and I were both eating out so my $8.50 an hour pay before taxes went straight out the window. DH on the other hand did get a second job for a great pay and it worked out for us. Is there anything you or your FI have a skill in that you could use that to make a little extra money.

I'm working two part time jobs now (though I work about 50 hours a week total).  I picked up an extra 3 days a week at an organic food store with the thought of saving all of the money I made from the market for the wedding.

The other, and primary job, I have is at a flower shop.  So I'll definitely be getting perks out of working there.  :)  Not only do I get to buy all my flowers at cost, but I know how to do them myself so I don't have to pay labor.  Woot woot!

Mr. Tattoo is a programmer and graphic designer so he is picking up extra requests and I started selling Mary Kay again. FI also quit smoking so we are putting that $3000 towards the wedding.

@roxy821: FI's in school full time as well and wouldn't be able to start anything until the summer at the earliest. I'm hoping to get a head start. I'm not especially crafty or anything, so no on the skills front.

@DesireeAnne: Those are both awesome discounts! I went and clarified my post, but I meant to say women who are working a second job in addition to whatever their full-time/other position is. (I'm curious about balancing the two and if it's worth it).

Both my FI and I are teaching extra classes for more money to help pay for the wedding.

@LindsayB: Awww, man! I used to work at a flower shop in high school and it was such a great job! I'm also jealous that you get such a fab perk for your wedding!

@Miss Tattoo: Very cool! I also remember you saying you were doing some trades for vendors, which is a cool idea.

@Miichelle: Awesome! What do you teach?

I'm technically not supposed to be working another job, anyway, but hopefully if I don't find something too involved (retail) that would work.

Oh, our full time jobs are being professors, so in a kind of roundabout sort of way, the perk of teaching extra classes is that our work hours are still within the school calendar, and thus we have preserved our precious breaks! If we took some other part time job, we might be booked over the summer...and then when would we have time for our wedding and honeymoon! :-)

@RayRayFurious : I teach English (reading and writing and critical thinking - not literature) and my FI teaches math (mostly calculus). What are you studying in grad school?

In order of if it's worth it I think that's different in every situation, figure out how much you will make after taxes and what you will have to give up and if there will be additional expenses associated.

@DesireeAnne: Also, just noticed your Flyers jersey! Nice look. (I'm from PHiLTHadelphia). Where are you getting married?

@Miichelle: I'm an English student, too! I teach a couple of composition courses and take a full load of classes, so I don't want to do anything too stressful part-time. But beggars can't be choosers, so I'll pretty much do whatever.

It doesn't help that I live in a really, really small town and not much is available. Ugh! Why do weddings have to be so expensive?!?! *whines*

@roxy821: I guess I meant if it will be worth it mentally. I really like my main gig, even though it's exhausting. I just need to supplement it financially.

I know it will be worth it financially. I currently make under minimum wage, so it's been nearly impossible to save up any money for the wedding so far, so anything will help.

I work a second job PRN which is where almost our entire wedding budget is coming from.  In exchange for this, FI cooks dinner everynight, and does the laundry and stuff if I have to work on a weekend.  I try to only work one evening a week at most and one weekend day a month.  We are in the home stretch of a long engagement, so we have been diligently saving for over a year.  I definitely think it has been worth it to not use other savings/beg parents/go into debt.  And the check my Dad gave me was a great bonus since we werent even planning on that money.

@roxy821: we did some "cost benefit" calculating of whether or not it was worth it to pick up the extra classes--it comes out pretty beneficial...  Even though we get the part time rate for the extra classes (which is a fraction of our full time rate), it is still more than other part time jobs would pay. Also, there is no extra time/cost from driving since we are already on campus and just stick around to teach another few sections. Finally, the part time pay gets merged in with our full time pay all on one paycheck, one tax return, and even gets added in to our total yearly amount used to calculate retirement!

@RayRayFurious: Awesome! So, you know the thrill of grading papers. I have a stack of a few hundred beckoning me (lol!). Though, I do use turnitin.com more and more and am finding that grading in that online program moves quite smoothly.

@Miichelle: Yes! I'm actually grading now in the library! And have about 100 assignments waiting for me. Wait, why do I want this career again?! jk!

Lucky you! My department doesn't have a subscription for Turnitin! Don't get me started on my rant though. We could be here all night! lol

    Hey ladies!

I'm a teacher by day, babysitter by night and cake/crafter by weekend.  I picked up the babysitting because it's a cash flow job and I use the cash to buy wedding items, for example I purchased my shoes (YAY!) with money from last weekend.  My FH works a ton of OT at his job.  We're doing anything we can to skrimp and save for the big day.

We are full time students and we do "odd jobs" here and there all the time, sell on eBay sometimes, etc.  But, with all the wedding planning and the date coming up VERY SOON I haven't had time for anything but school. FI is not doing as much hands-on wedding stuff, so she is currently looking for a part time job.  Hopefully weekends only since she is the kind of student who needs to study a lot (moreso than me).

But yeah, we need a few hundred extra to relieve my anxiety!  Every little bit would help, we'll probably try for some temp assignments too in the next week or so.

I'm working at Target on the weekends while I'm also going to grad school, tutoring, being a graduate assistant and subbing...every little bit helps, though I am stressed to the max and considering counseling for anxiety now lol.

Yup, I've been babysitting, housesitting, looking after a teen with autism, anything I can do to make/save extra money on top of my full time job.

@karatechick27:  I hear ya and I'm not even doing half of what you are doing!  Funny because I actually just contacted someone through my school's counseling center to ask about seeing someone for anxiety, for real!   we figured we should get the wedding done now, while we're both still community college students, before we transfer and the real stress begins but yikes!  We decided to do this over spring break because we like the cooler months and since many we invited are either teachers or students, but I am starting to wish we'd held off until summer!

Babysitters:  how are you getting leads?   I used to babysit all the time, both in high school as well as after I had my own kids. I have tons of experience and also worked for years at a private school running the afterschool program and subbing in the pre-k room.  I'm also a mom of 3, but the problem is, I don't know anyone anymore with kids that age... I've moved on to a different social circle and all my friends have kids who are teens or pre-teens.

I have tried care.com  for sitter work, and I never ever get any referrals/jobs from that site, nor do I get any responses when I answer ads, and it's to the point where I think their system is broken because I know I'm qualified for sitter work!    sometimes the job is PERFECT for me and the location and hours and everything, and still, I never get any response.  it's weird.

Yeah I work PT as a tutor, and FT as well.  I also went to school last term to finish up my MS (which was really stressful).  The I think is to find something flexible and that you don't hate.  Well... that's what worked for me anyway.  I don't know if I'll bother to keep it after the wedding.

I actually just got a part time job at a bridal store in NYC. I start this weekend! I'm very excited about that. I also have a small ebay store where I sell dresses. Been doing the ebay thing on and off for about 2 years now, but I'm taking it up a notch so I can make some extra cash. I need to list new inventory this weekend actually :P
