Can you really tell the clarity of someone else's diamond unless you ask? I'm feeling a little bad about my ring.
It is about the same colour and clarity as most certificated rings you could pick up in a high street jeweller here in the UK and certainly not F or IF, but I have to confess that I generally can't spot the clarity of a ring at a glance.
I see sparkle, and generally higher quality stones have more sparkle than lower quality ones. But no, I can't tell the difference between an SI1 and a VVSI at a glance. All I care is that my stone sparkles like crazy. It's perfect. :)
@SpecialSundae: Would you feel bad if you didn't know the clarity of your ring? We had mine appraised for insurance purposes. I never researched diamond specs because I wasn't involved in purchasing it & I could go dig out the appraisal now & google it, but I won't (because I don't want to think any less of my ring if any of the 4C's are on the lower end). I love the way mine sparkles & I know if I found out something negative about it, I'd be sad.
To answer your question, I can only tell a diamond's clarity if it is SUPER included (I wouldn't EVER be able to guess the clarity rating though). Maybe, if you're comfortable with it, post a pic. I'm sure it's beautiful.
@lovekiss: Peole are always telling me it's really sparkly but it gets smeary any time I touch it so I'm forever polishing it with a glasses cloth (nothing to do with clarity, I know, just more of an issue to its sparkle than anything else).
I completely agree with @rachgirl82. I don't think you can really tell unless there are so many inclusions that they are very visible to the naked eye. I could never ever determine the clarity rating though.
I am sure your ring is beautiful!
@rachgirl82: That's a really sensible way to look at it. I didn't even look at it as a negative thing until someone else said it was as it's the same quality as most jewellers here sell.
I don't have many pictures of it at the moment, just one from the day he proposed (with the bottle of bubbly the ring was tied to) and one where I was actually taking a shot of my nails.

@Sunshine1810: Thank you. I'm being totally daft. I must suffering from PMT. I only have my forum panics when I'm pre-menstrual.
@SpecialSundae: Your ring is very lovely. And i'm not saying that because mine is so similar or anything. LOL FWIW, my center stone is E, SI1, Excellent Cut, No flourescence
I have to admit total ignorance about diamonds, and gems in general. About a year ago when I visited my Aunt, I made a comment that I always thought her engagement ring was the prettiest one I ever saw, and I hoped that my then boyfriend would get me one that looked similar. She laughed, and said that it was a sterling silver, cubic zirconia and cost about $10.00 30 years ago. I had no idea. That's when I realized that it really is what the ring symbolizes, not what it costs, that matters. I can bet most everyone who saw my aunts ring in her lifetime thought it was a real diamond.
Yeah, I don't really think it's noticeable until you get to the point where you can spot a big black inclusion from a mile away. I've seen a couple of those, but no, for the most part I can't tell.
I never see clarity, cut or any of that. I see the general design of the ring. I don't know, maybe I am weird... I never pay attention to the stone, I like the details that make it unique.
@SpecialSundae: Ok, don't be crazy
That ring is BEAUTIFUL!! Are those emerald cut baguettes on the sides? The 2nd pic really shows how much it must shine in real life, no worries girl!! Be proud of that ring!
I know nothing about diamonds. I couldn't even tell you the size of mine so clarity, cut, or whatever else the Cs are - don't ask me.
I DO know that your ring is absolutely beautiful.
I think color and cut are generally easier to spot/make more impact than minor inclusions.
I think you have to be a professional to be able to tell at a glance, and even then they mostly look through their magnifier to be sure.
@lovekiss: Thank you. Mine is H, SI1 (I think), no fluorescence and I have no idea about cut as it's an antique cut. I was actually really pleased that it was a fairly decent quality because it's so old (at least 1940s and possibly earlier as it was my Grandma's and may have been a family diamond before that).
@rachgirl82: Thank you too. They're step-cut baguettes but they have sharp corners rather than the cut off ones that emerald cuts have. I'm not sure what they'd be called.
I actually had a funny moment in a jeweller when I went to see if I could get a silver and CZ replica made for when we travel and they actually took it through the back to make sure it was a real diamond because it looks a little unusual (I think due to the antique cut).
@rachgirl82: I'll ditto that. It's an amazing band!
Psh. Clarity is difficult to spot unless you have a stone that is visibly included without magnification. My stone is on the lower end of the spectrum in terms of clarity and it sparkles like nothing else I've ever seen!
Clarity is what makes it sparkle. If there is no clarity, then the diamond is dull. Cut and clarity go hand in hand since they both achieve the same goal (sparkle), so yes it is easy for most folks to spot right away, even if they don't know that's what it is.
I cant tell the difference between anything "eye clean", VS2 and up. I looked at some SI's and the inclusions were very noticible. But not all SI's are created equal, some were not noticible from the top and could only be seen from the side. In terms of telling from sparkle... i have no clue.
@SpecialSundae: You are welcome. It's truely a gorgeous stone. I have an 'old mine' cut & love it. Here's a pic cause I'm a ring porn whore...
Thanks. I lurve my band and I can't wait to wear it!
@SpecialSundae: I think it's so cool that you get to wear a piece of your family's history. <3
@lovekiss: I have my mum's engagement ring too, which I'm thinking of passing on to my brother if he ever gets engaged so we have more family rings moving on. I was meant to get some of the diamonds out of my granny's ring but it went missing after her death so the money from the insurance claim paid for our wedding rings.
We're big on family rings in our family. My aunt and cousins have pieces of my great aunt's ring (it was huge so it was split up).
@SpecialSundae: That's so sweet of you to want to give your mum's ring to your brother. Mr. LK's parents have passed, and I wear his Mom's engagement ring every day. His dad gave it to his Mom on the night of their senior prom. And it's the ring Mr. LK proposed to me with because he knew I wanted to choose my own ring. I love wearing a piece of her jewelry every day and knowing that, in doing so, I am helping to keep their memory alive.
Mine looks like theres a chip or bubble on the inside but you can't see it unless it's dark and it's not sparkly. I don't mind though =) it looks clean in pictures and such... I pulled out my card to check the info on it and it says I2 color G
@HappilyEverAfter54: That looks absolutely gorgeous.
Just like some of the other ladies have already said, I cannot tell unless it's super included. Half way to looking like a milk cloud. =P lol Here's a picture of mine. It's J color and SI2. Can you tell? =) You have a beautiful ring and I would never know the clarity or color.
@MandyCakes: Gosh, that's gorgeous. All of these rings are stunning. I feel so much better. I was starting to feel like everyone but me had perfect D/IF stones.
@SpecialSundae: Thank you. When I was looking for rings the jeweler said something that stuck with me. He said even though clarity and color are important, cut is the most important in his opinion. He said that you can have a stone that might be lower in clairty but if the diamond is cut properly you will never see it.
Your ring is gorgeous! Seriously doubt anyone can tell anything like that about your ring. I seen you delete a comment you wrote about your ring in another post & you said you deleted it because you was embarrassed. Dont be, at all. Your ring is GORGEOUS! My ring is also on the lower end of the clarity chart & boy its sparkles like the stars in the sky, no joke!

I have a visible inclusion that took me more than a year to notice. at first, I thought it was a pice of lint caught in my prong.
also, it's chipped around the girdle (it's very old) and it took several weeks before I noticed that. I can't see it w/o a loupe, I can only feel it with my fingernail.
I think it's most obvious if/when you have your ring next to someone else's ring that is a different clarity from your ring-- then it's way more obvious. Or, if there are Very large/obvious inclusions/aberrations in your stone.
I've wondered about this too, whether it would be better to get a VS2 or SI1 with good cut, or an I1 with ideal cut.
It depends... I ordered a wedding ring online and they said the clarity was SI2, but after looking at it, the ring was sooooooo cloudy. There is NO way it was SI2.
As far as peoples engagement rings go, I dont really notice the clarity of it. Only mine :D
I've never been able to tell, unless it was cloudy.
@AmuseMeMusically: Go with the best cut for sure! The sparkle will hide the flaws. My FI looked at a colorless "good" cut diamond next to my nearly colorless perfectly cut one and picked mine even though the other was much more expensive because of the color. Then you can go down a step or two and get an eye-clean stone with lower clarity.
No, I can't tell. I can see the flaw in my diamond at certain angles or if I look close (it's I-2 gasp!) but honestly I doubt anyone else can. I'd have to hold it really still in front of their face and really, when does that happen?
Your ring is beautiful by the way :) Here's mine with its big inclusion and all:
