@Maggie24: I would assume that there would be a ton of snow...is the park even open in winter?
The park is open in the winter by snowmobile or snowcoach with a guide. If you can deal with the cold and snow its a beautiful time to be there. :) Double check their winter openings too because they close once the snow starts so that they can groom the roads to be passable by snow vechicles and only open once the roads are safe.
I've no idea...
someone says it is different beauty in winter
someone says it is not good...
@lovemygsp: I see, I guess have to check the weather closely before I go Thank you!
I think only two of the gates are open in the winter to driving (maybe the North and one other gate?), but I know you can access the park via snowmobile through some of the gates, as well. Basically, access is much more limited, and I don't think any of the park lodging is open during winter. You have to stay somewhere nearby and access the park during the day. Usually you can only get in with certain vendors, and then it's like a day pass.
Fwiw, my husband and I drove to Jackson Hole for a weekend like 7 years ago and it was fun. We did a 4 hour snowmobile tour of the park which was fun but expensive.
@Mrs. Spring:I believe the old faithful snow lodge is open. Correction: it is in fact open.

@lovemygsp: Nice! I thought they closed it down during the winter!
I say go for it! It's open in the winter and I've heard it's beautiful, I've never been though. I live in the south of the state and the interstate between Laramie and Cheyenne (I-80) closes all the time during the winter. I'm not sure where you're coming from, but I would take 1-25 to 1-90 to get there-just don't take I-80.
I wouldn't go. I have camped the last day the park is open around Thanksgiving at it was -10 at night. The park is mostly closed during winter. Do you like winter? I have also done wolf tracking there with wildlife biologists in February. It is very beautiful. The main reason I said "don't go" at first is that the weather can be rough if you are driving. It really is beautiful though, and cool to see the steaming pools in winter.
It's a completely different park in the winter versus the summer, and if at all possible I'd recommend checking it out in both seasons. You can stay at Old Faithful Lodge in the winter after trekking in via snowcoach, which is lovely and quite fun (and better for the environment and the wildlife than taking a snowmobile). You can drive through the northeast portion of the park and observe moose, bison and wolves in the snow. It's really beautiful. Be sure to visit some of the many hot springs in the area around Yellowstone, they're amazing in the cold weather - we went to several, and one had a blue-grass band playing and beer available on tap. It was glorious.
@LittlestBirds: Hot springs are hands down one of the greatest things about the west!!!
