I wouldn't call it an engagement party per say but I think hosting a big party for your friends to tell them that you've set a date for XYZ would be totally fine! But then again, I'm all for hosting dinner parties and things so maybe that's just me! :)
My fiance and I were engaged last May and our families are just now asking about throwing us an engagement party for our July 2010 wedding. They're thinking May. So that'll be a year from our engagement; it felt weird to call it that, so we're calling it a couple's shower. I think you could get away with that maybe?
P and I had a three-year engagement...we had a party last year that halfway celebrated our engagement and halfway celebrated the one-year-left mark. It was super low key, but a lot of fun!

Feb 27 my fiance and I will have been engaged 3 yrs. We FINALLY set a date recently for next Jan. We're social people.... well I'm a social person as long as I'm with him. LOL. We own a DJ business so in some way I feel like it's expected of us. We'd hold it during the summer if we were to have one... but everyone knows we're engaged. Isn't an engagment party sorta like a "coming out" about being engaged? I feel like after a yr is fine, maybe even after two, but 3 seems down right ridiculous in a lot of ways. We're not rich people by any means and we'll already be throwing a party for my dad in Aug. Then of course the wedding in Jan and somewhere in between now and then we'll have to come up with a home (no renting for the JB's hopefully). Oh and did I mention that I'm a college student. LOTS of things going on, but some how all this planning for everything makes me happy and full of purpose. I like playing hostess regardless of the event.
