We live in a very small 1 bedroom apt that is realy made for 1 person. I swear everytime I clean it still looks a mess because we have so much stuff. I just cleaned my bathroom and went to do the living room but got discourage. Anyone else have this issue.
Yup. Too much stuff, not enough space.
I had the same issue and it turned me into super-psycho-neat-freak-lady. I'm glad we moved. Lol.
We have more space now than at our apartment, but I think that I have a harder time keeping up with the bigger space. The boys seem to think that just because there is more space, that means there is more space to put stuff before all the space is taken and you HAVE to put it away. Just makes me crazy!!!
@sexxysheddy: I know exactly how you feel! DH had this place pretty full even before I moved in, and it seems like no matter how much stuff we sell in garage sales or give to goodwill, there is always so much stuff it is impossible to keep the house clean. It's especially bad because I'm a student, so I have papers and my laptop and books everywhere, and he is a musician so he has guitars and amps and pedal boards everywhere! We just started looking at houses and I'm so psyched we'll finally have space, because it's like no matter how much I clean it still looks messy.
Absolutely ! We live in a 2 bedroom apartment and have that problem ! Both of our stuff together in an apartment that lacks storage space... never a good idea ! hehe Its not that its messy, its just that if there is even just a couple of things out of place, it looks like a huge mess !
If your in it for the long run, I reccomend scaling back so you can feel refreshed and not closed in!
@tksjewelry: I keep telling the FI that once we moved it will be easier. He told me that when we get more space we will acquire more junk. I have sat in my apt crying becaus I feel like I belong on Hoarders. I have no issue of throwing stuff out but I just feel like I am getting consumed by cleaning. I keep telling myself when we get a bigger place I will make sure to keep it simple. FI suffer from realy bad astham so I dust every freaking weekend.
I find it hard because 1) we have a lot of stuff and not a lot of storage space 2) it's easy for a little mess to look really overwhelming because of the lack of space.
I love where we live, but it can get frustrating at times
@sugarpea: I love our apt 2 and I have been there for 3 years and FI moved in with me 2 years ago. I get all teary when I realize we need to leave it.
YESSSSSSSS oh gosh, I'm so glad I'm not in the minority. Our apt is a pig stye half the time because there is NO storage space. I swear, we need another bedroom just for our shoes alone! It's out of control. No matter what I do, I can't manage to keep it super tiday and crisp looking. This is a mixture of laziness/our bad habits buuuut we literally have no space lol. crap
@sexxysheddy: I totally understand that, when the time comes for us to leave it'll be really hard :(
It's definitely hard when there is too much stuff! I think getting rid of things might help a surprising amount
Ugh, yes. I feel like no matter how much I clean and organize it still looks like a mess. We have no space for anything.
We have a tiny 1-bedroom and they key for us is to keep the clutter under control.
The bed has to be made and everything has to be picked up - or else it looks like a small tornado blew through.
I try to straighten up before I leave for work in the morning. Doing a quick 5 minute sweep keeps things under control.
It's been a HUGE learning curve for me, though. I'm the messy one (take something off, throw it in a corner) and DH is the neat freak. Part of me getting into an intentional routine is because I know I'm loving him by keeping things tidy. Even on my best days, I think he still would like things more orderly... but, hey -I'm doing my best!!!!
ETA: we also purge a lot of stuff very frequently. If we aren't using it, it either gets stored in the garage or gets donated. We also don't buy in bulk (because there's no where to keep extra stuff).
I always have 'stuff' on surfaces. The problem is I don't have like, a space to put important stuff I need to work on. It all gets jumbled up. =(
YES! My place is too small for all my stuff and it always looks cluttered. The wedding stuff is not helping either I want my dinningroom back =/
yes, and we have a two bedroom. the second bedroom is our guest room but since we don't end up having lots of guests, it has become our clutter room.
We have the same problem--even though we live in a 3BR townhouse...I bought the house and lived here alone initially--and then my hubby moved in and we merged two homes together...furniture, kitchenware, etc! We are bursting at the seams because there is no storage in the house and I feel like there is crap everywhere! We are in the process of building a larger home now and just recently filled an entire 20x20 storage unit with excess furniture and other housewares--now the house seems clean! Thank goodness we are tripling our living space in the new house =)
Ugh, yes! With an 8 year old (and all the stuff that comes along with her!) in a 2 bedroom apartment, it's really difficult to keep things tidy. I'm not naturally a neat-freak so I do tend to let things get a bit cluttered, but it's SO frustrating.
My partner always gets annoyed when he comes home (we're in an LDR while he's away at school) but he has a 2 story, 2 bedroom townhouse to himself... totally different!
I think I need to more regularly purge things. It's definitely time to clear out my closet again!
Yes! We have one closet which is where all our clothes are. I joke that our vacuum cleaner is a great accent piece.
We will be upgrading to a 2 bedroom once I get a "real" job. I'm so excited.
No, for two reasons. Years ago my Gmom came up to visit me and created a lot of hidden storage solutions that instantly made the place look much nicer. The second is that my DH is a total neat freak and cannot stand anything out of place, so he's constantly putting things away. We have a decent amount of storage in our new place, but it's still easy for it to look messy in a small space.
It's all about buying furniture that has plenty of storage space and keeping things neat. I also hang my purses on the wall so they look like nice but aren't cluttering up a closet or the floor.
I have thrown away so much stuff and I still have more crap. We both play tennis so our tennis bags do not have a home. FI is a mechanic and he needs to store some tools here. I also have winter coats that take a huge space in our walk in closet. Did I also mention that FI skis so we have skis and other crap we need to store. The FI suffers from Asthma so I am in the mood of trying to keep our house clean and clutter free. I just got home from work 30 minutes ago and Now I plan to unglutter our living room. The bedroom will be my last battle because its the bigger problem. It also does not help that our bedroom is our office space 2. We have the computer and all my school crap.
Ugh, it's the WORST. We live in a one bedroom and it's so difficult to keep it clean, because we have no room for anything. We only have 2 small closets - one for my clothes, one for FI's. This means absolutely no other storage areas.
That said, I think we did a good job of making the place cute and liveable - to the point that I actually like it (aside from the fact that it gets SO cluttered pretty much the day after cleaning it).
ugh our place is always a mess. We live in an old place, so even when it is clean...it doesn't look that clean. Too bad I'm not a neat freak...
our place is getting renovated so everything I own is curently crammed in a small efficiancy appartment type bedroom... I feel like even when it is technically clean two socks on the floor makes it feel like a pigsty
My SO and I live in a unit that is just over 400 sq ft. It is horrible! I can't wait to move, but it's the only thing we can afford in our area. The house is always a mess because we have hardly any storage (no uppers in the kitchen, no dishwasher, no storage in the bathroom... ugh hate it). We have a fairly big yard which is nice May-October, but during winter everything just gets out of hand. Our kitchen is the worst. We have a 4x14" kitchen (only 2ft of walkway) and there is one wall that is 90% windows.. which means we couldn't put uppers in if we wanted) We have a cabinet where a dishwasher is supposed to be, but there isn't one and we can't find any hookups... so that's wasted space. Also the kitty litter box has nowhere to go but behind the couch, which also serves as our dining table. Waiting until September or so to move... ugh.. I can't live too much longer here. I'm even contemplating moving back into my mom's house (to save money and have a better kitchen, bathroom, backyard... if only I can get SO on board, but it's also about 30 minutes away...
yes! when i had an apartment, all the closets were like jigsaw puzzles. taking out one piece (like the vacuum) took forever!
@nineteen87: our kitchen is so small that when one of us is in there the other one must stay out. I want a cat so badly but so have no room for him/her to play so we are waiting. Also my bathroom is in my bedroom. I cannot wait for a bigger home,
@kerensa: When I take one thing out everything else falls on me..LOL
Yes, but only because I work nights and it's hard for me to find the energy and motivation to keep it tidy. FI doesn't help either. He can create such a damn mess. Ugh.
We have a hard time because there is NO storage space. We each have a closet and that's all there is. My clothes are crammed in my closet and FI's are crammed in his (along with some bins of stuff). It'll be better after the wedding, but even then we need some storage!
Small apartments are easier to keep CLEAN, but soooo much harder to keep tidy when you have nowhere to put stuff.
OMG! YES! I have a loft apartment, it is only about 750+ square feet and it looks like a warehouse downstairs. It is really a challenge! I feel like all I do is organize and clean. It sucks.
My condo is 785 square feet. I hate clutter and am constantly sending things to goodwill. Mr. Mink has o have a storage unit...he's sentimental and holds on to things a bit longer than I would.
I actually like living small. It makes me more careful with purchases. If I bring something home, it's because I really love it.
I will say that wedding DIY projects are everywhere and I wish I had a room for it all.
We have a small apartment but it suits us perfectly. Honestly, almost everything in it is mine anyways. FI's possessions could fit in th back of his car.
So no, I keep it pretty clean easily, but probably cause like I said, my fiance doesn't actually own a lot.
@MissPumpkinPie: Same here!!! I brought a dry erase calendar (did this in college living with 4 other girls).. Each week I assign both of us cleaning chores. It seems to really be working the apartment stays organized now..
Oh YEAH! Because in a small place, if you even have one sock out of place, the whole apartment looks a mess haha.
We fixed that problem by getting rid of all the extra "stuff". You'd be surprised how little you actually need/use. After 6 years in a one bedroom, it's still perfect for us!
