Is it normal not to have your references called?

@regit45:  Some companies do, others don’t.  I think the companies that don’t check references figure you wouldn’t put anyone as a reference who is going to say anything negative about you.

@regit45:  I am curious about this also. TBH I have no idea if they do or don’t call, or what their criteria is for doing so.

I don’t know which one of my references have/have not been called, so I can’t really say from experience.

I know none of my references were called getting this job, so yeah, I think it may be common.

Two of my references have always let me know when they got a call about me. Some jobs called one reference, some called all of my references, and some didn’t call any.

I put in over 100 applications during my last job search. When I talked to one of my references about it she told me she hadn’t been called even once. It seems in my field that they don’t really call your references.

I think it’s pretty common not to call references.

My first couple of years out of college they called. Since I’ve gotten established in my career, they never do anymore.

Very common. I think calling references is rare in this day and age and is a sign of a place that takes hiring very seriously. I think most places realize that if you list someone as a reference, they are going to say good things about you, so maybe they just want to make sure you CAN list someone.

I too think it is pretty common not to call. References are great when they are debating between two candidates- that can help them to make the final decision.

For example, the job I was interviewing for just before I got the job I have now, they did call my references. The potential supervisor told me that they loved me but also had an internal candidate (who got the job). With this situation they may have called references to make it fair and leagal, or because they like to take the hiring very serious.

The job I have now, however didn’t call my references- they met me, loved me, hired me.

My place of work always calls a person’s references. Well, we do now after we hired a dud a few years ago. My boss failed to call this person’s references or former bosses. We don’t make that mistake anymore.

I’m 37 and never had my references called or contacted.  They were all people I worked with and were close enough to to ask.  I was made a low level store manager when I was younger and my boss had two things to say “Anyone can come up with two or three people to swear how awesome they are, so it’s pointless to check.” and “If you call me you better have called 911 already, anything else I made you a manager for a reason.”.

I don’t personally know if any of the references were ever called or not, but a friend (and at one point co-worker) listed me as a reference on his Wal-Mart application about five years ago, and they did call. The lady kept me on the phone for around fifteen minutes asking me different things about his work ethic, and it was kind of weird, because I just kept repeating the same thing – I’m not good on the spot.

Probably varies between workplaces.
