    Because I just did, and I almost feel bad about it, except I don't. I didn't steal it first though - I stole it in the end. Have you ever stolen your own?

    Guess it depends on how bad the other gifts are.  I'm glad we got something nice from ours and not junk!

    Pssh, I've totally stolen my own!  If I spent good money on a present, I'm not going home with Bengay (seriously, Bengay?).

    phew, if all the other gifts were things you know you would never use and just throw away, I think it's ok! These type of gift swaps always make me nervous... lol.

    I think it's okay if you think that your gift is really what you would prefer to have. It's only bad if you expect to get it back, and then get ticked if you end up with something else. Example - FSIL was REALLY pissed at me when I took the present from her that she brought, at the last second of the gift exchange.

    If you want something that badly, just buy it for yourself, people!

    haha, I didn't want it that badly! I just wasn't wild about the other gifts and needed something portable to bring on my commuter train happy hour.  So I went through having an ice cream ball, and 2 different bottles of wine before I was finally stolen in the end.  So I stole my own gift back - glad to know I'm not alone!

    People get really attached to things, I mean, we had a $10 limit, so if you didn't get what you wanted...buy it yourself!

    @Appleblossom - uncool!

    Exactly, if you want one for yourself, you should be able to afford it!

    @dorsay I didn't mean to sound rude lol, that was directed at no one! Just exasperated ranting!

    Yeah the $10 limit makes you go, "Really? You couldn't just buy this for yourself and then bring a ridiculously crappy gift like everyone else brought?"

    I have a rule, that I buy myself nothing in the month of december. So if I see something I love, I buy it for a party (I usually end up at 3!) and then steal it! Mwahahaha!

    I would totally steal my own if it was the best gift and I had an opportunity!  don't feel bad (plus, does anyone even know it was yours?)

    I wish I would have stolen my own. I would have ended up with $3 cash and a box of sugar babies.

    All I got was a silly box of dollar store hawaiian shirt floating candles.

    yea...I would. The last exchange like that was with my fiance's side of the family were the guys and gals did their own. Well I brought a gift (something I liked), but his grandma didn't. His aunts kept telling her to just take one and someone would be sol which they all thought was soooo funny. Guess who that was...b******. I avoid white elephant/yankee swap when I can now! I was peeved I spent $20 bucks on a gift to be treated like that.

    HA--- at my office, white elephant is taken very seriously: whoever GIVES the best gift gets an extra day off :)

    That said, this year someone brought a terrible tie-dyed bag that was clearly picked out of her kid's closet.  In that kind of instance, I think you SHOULD take your own gift, and spare someone else who actually tried!
