I got up on the roof before to take the covers off the evaporate cooler, with the intention of cleaning out the inside. It appears it has never been cleaned before, sludgy water, parts covered in a white film (almost corroded looking!), not to mention the wires etc in there. Seems way out of my league, especially because it’s not a flat roof to work on to start with… Is it reasonable to ask our rental agency to organise for an air con tech to come and do it, or is this typically something renters should attempt themselves? Just worried about what might be brewing in there, and also slipping off the roof or electrocuting myself!

Hm, I don’t know if it’s different in the US, but I think that’s more than reasonable. That doesn’t seem like a function that the tenants should own to me.

@Deejayelle: I would definitely ask them to do it! I always went by anything that was there when I moved in is theirs and thus their responsibility, if I purchased it than it’s my responsibility.

Definitely not your responsibility, call your rental agency!

I’d assume that if there’s any sort of warranty on the unit it would be void if maintenance was carried our by anyone other than a licensed technician. I think they’d definitely prefer that you contacted them.
