@laurelewrigley:  I don’t really know what is standard, but I have my first appointment with a florist on wednesday. She didn’t act like I was crazy and planning too early when I called to make the appointment.

I think it’s fine to shop around and get some ideas for pricing, but I doubt many florists are booked now for Sept 2013 – they may not even take orders that far in advance. I learned from my florist that most florists do multiple weddings every weekend – so they’re not even as limited time-wise as venues and lots of other vendors are! But I totally understand wanting to figure out a floral budget, it doesn’t hurt to shop around. Just keep in mind that a LOT of bees have changed their mind about decor multiple times during wedding planning, so I wouldn’t pay a deposit and lock in on a particular floral scheme until a little closer to your wedding – I booked our florist 6 months in advance, and I haven’t changed my mind about any of the floral details.

I think you’re just fine to start looking now! Once your date & venue are locked in and you’re within a year, I think pretty much any vendor/item is good to start looking at.

I’ve found that the only way I can come up with any kind of budget is to “shop” for things.  I don’t think any florist would object to meeting with you to discuss what you’re looking for and to get ideas at this point.  I would maybe try to do it now as opposed to late-November and December when they’ll be swamped with christmas.

(Flowers aren’t a priority for me, so I haven’t consulted with a florist yet, but if they are important to you, then I would go. For me, I just want to have as much on my list crossed off before the end of the year.  I’m sure that next spring and summer will find me swamped with other details I don’t even realise I need to be thinking about and I’d regret not having things I could have done now out of the way)

You can never go wrong good you start looking now. You may change your mind 100 times so its good to start now, to give yourself the room to change your mind… You don’t want to be months away from your wedding change your mind and they can’t do it due to time
