I've been lurking here for a little while, and this is my first post here! Here's my story: I've been engaged for a little over 2 years, but we just recently chose a date for the wedding. I wore a large blue topaz e-ring (not sure of the size) until about a week ago when I got this ring. It's an heirloom - my mom wore it when she was married to my dad, who has been deceased for 2 years. She was planning to pass it on to me later, but she thought now would be a good time. I love the meaning behind it!

Anyway, since receiving this ring, I've gotten several positive comments on it, but one comment I'm receiving a lot is that it's "plain." It makes me feel a little self-conscious and reluctant to show off my ring. I feel that it's a good size and good fit for my hand, as I wear a size 3.75. What do you ladies think?

definitely not! It is gorgeous and timeless! I'm personally not a fan of the super blinged out rings.

No it's not too boring! It's classic and beautiful! Solitaires really allow the stone to take center stage!

I think it is perfect. Simple can be elegant, and you are right, it is a good fit to your hand/finger size. :) don't let people's negativity get into your head.

Solitaires make their own statement...I was proposed to with  an emerald cut solitaire engagement ring, I loved it at first sight, I loved it with my wedding band and now, five years later I love it with two....if it works for you, it works!

I think it is gorgeous and classic.  If you really want to bling it up do so with a funky wedding band but the solitaire is so beautiful!!!

don't even listen to those negative comments.  if solitaires are "plain", they wouldn't be such a classic engagement ring style.  you're ring is lovely ^_^

I love your ring. I have a round solitaire myself.

It is plain, simple, timeless but NOT boring. Look at all that sparkle!

@LorensAngel:  How rude of people to say that!  I think it looks beautiful - classic and very sparkly.  I really like it :-)

How could anyone say that ring is plain?! It's gorgeous! Solitaires are always beautiful and classic, you can't go wrong with one! Plus the ring has sentimental meaning to you. I think it's absolutely gorgeous and looks perfect on you finger!

Thank you for the nice comments, everyone! It's good to know that there are still those who love solitaires and don't think loads of bling are absolutely necessary. I feel better about it.

@LorensAngel:  I personally love the classic look of solitaires. They aren't trendy and they go with everything. I think it looks great and the sentimental value of it is priceless.

Not boring at all, I love it. I'm very much a detail girl for my own, but solitaries are so classic and beautiful, and the fact that it was your mom's makes it very special. The people who are making negative comments are incredibly rude.

@LorensAngel:  Your ring is beautiful and timeless.  If you feel like you want to jazz it up a bit, you could get one of those wraps that changes the look of the band, but your ring is beautiful as is.

For the record, I have a solitaire in a pave band, and I'd eventually like to upgrade my setting one day to a plain shank.  I have a diamond wedding band, and I adore the look of plain shank against a diamond band.

    @LorensAngel:  It's a classic solitaire. You can't go wrong.

Hopefully the person didn't mean anything bad by 'plain' (not the nicest word, but maybe they were trying to say 'simple and elegant'? lol).

    It's lovely.

    I think its beautiful!

My ring was my moms, it is a solitaire and 40 years old.  The diamond is not very big, and the people who do ask to see it literally say nothing! lol I dont try to show it off though... I feel like people think FI is cheap or something because I wear my moms ring.  But it has alot more meaning than ANY diamond ring he could have bought from a jewler.  The band is whats most important for me.

When I am speaking of a solitaire like yours I would call it a "plain" solitaire, only meaning that the shank has no stones on it. I by no means think the ring is boring, I think the solitaire it absolutely gorgeous and timeless, I actually got a plain shank at first but ultimately decided to return it (for other reasons) and ended up with small stones on mine. Maybe the people referring to your ring as "plain" are only referring to the shank being plain as well? And of course maybe they are not and are just being rude. I think sometimes people make comments such as that out of jealousy, try to ignore them, your ring is gorgeous!!!!

Pfft, who cares what other's think. I have a "plain" solitaire too and I have no problems proudly displaying it if someone asks. Everyone's taste is different. If YOU love it, that's all that matters.

Oh and another thing, the plain shank is the easiest to pair a wedding band with. If you want more stones you can opt to get a totally blingy wedding band!

No way! There is nothing plain or boring about a sparkly diamond. I have I round solitaire as well and I just cannot imagine a more classically beautiful ring. You can pair it with a unique wedding band if you're looking for something a little different.

I think it's beautiful and classic, and I love that it's an heirloom.  Plus, you can wear pretty much any wedding band with it, so you could "sparkle" it up a little with a diamond band.

I like it because it is timeless!  Actually, I am going to be the recipient of a "plain" engagement ring as well, because that is what I chose.

I originally wanted a halo, but then thought I might want my ring to be simpler 10 years from now.

And there is so much you can do with choosing your wedding band!

@LorensAngel:  Oh my gosh honey! if that ring could talk it would NOT say plain!

I think its lovely and timeless and you should be LOUD AND PROUD of the story and treasure of it!  Perhaps if you lead with your story people would be more WOW'ed but honestly, at the end of the day, you should know that its a one of a kind piece that has been in your family for decades and it is an HONOR to have it on your finger!

I'm jealous... and I think when you tell other girls the story, they will be too! hehe

PS- keep in mind you can also add a sweet wedding band to round out the design as well.

You could always get a fancy/detailed wedding band, to balance it out. That's why I like plainer engagement rings - they go with so many things.

People are rude. You can have the most gorgeous ring on the planet, and someone, somewhere will have something negative to say.

I think it's great. And even more special that it was your mom's.

Solitaires are my favorite, actually! Side stones and halos feel "fussy" to me, and take away from the center stone - you have my dream ring!

It is beautiful and no, it is definitely not boring. The history behind the ring alone makes it even more so.

I can't wait to see what kind of wedding band you'll chose. With a solitaire you can bling it out, or pair it with a plain gold band.

    You just can't miss. Smile
