There is a really good deal on a Keurig office coffee maker. I thought about getting one last year, but decided against it. I realized my body doesn't do well with caffeine, so begrudgingly gave up regular coffee. I still like decaf. I have been drinking mainly tea and occasionally hot chocolate (I have an automatic water boiler), but have been trying to avoid calories in beverages. So- is it really that great for someone like me? Would I get much use out of it?
That's a good question. I put one on the registry, and I have no idea, lol.
@guitargirl:I hope it is because I just found out I'm getting one for Christmas from my mom! She has one and whenever I go to visit I have a cup of coffee. It's sooo easy and fast. My mom only has tea and my dad only coffee. They also have hot chocolate and iced coffee, regular and decaf. I think there's something for everyone, actually.
We use it mostly for coffee and hot tea. The hot chocolate isn't very good, but that's mostly because I am used to making it with milk. We use ours daily though!
It is if you only make a small amount of coffee each day and if you can find the K cups for a reasonable price.
DH was so against it when we received one for a gift. Didn't understand why we'd use one when we have a great coffee maker. But we use it every single day! And he can make what he likes, I get what I like.
@BoiledPNut: Agreed. The K Cups can be expensive. They are always cheaper online, through Keurig's website, or Amazon. Every once in a while I will find them on sale at Macy's or Target though.
You could always buy the K Cup filter and fill it yourself too. We do that on occasion.
I never thought I would trade in my coffee maker but I my step-mom got me one, and I'm hooked. I don't buy the hot chocolate, or tea k cups though. Just buy hot chocolate packets, or tea bags and just make hot water. It's way cheaper, and still super convenient.
They are really making a big push for Christmas, aren't they? I see them everywhere!
I think they're great for households where people have different drink preferences. I haven't had coffee brewed in them myself, but I love the results from my Capresso machine and am happy with it (it has a "small batch" setting that adjusts the brewing cycle for the couple cups I drink).
We have one at work and I am completely hooked!!! I love that thing! Oh and I don't drink coffee. They have a large variety of black and herbal teas that I drink and then I occassionally have a cafe mocha or something. Love it!
Q: "is the keurig coffee maker really that great?"
A: YES.
Kidding aside, we LOVE ours. We were against it at first too but broke down and got one anyhow with the mindset of "we can return it if we don't like it". Obvoiusly that never happened. We love that you can make whatever you want, and it's especially good for company when each guest wants something different.
Or for days when I want a girly flavored decaf drink and my DH wants hot steaming road tar with no sugar.
my mom is obsessed!!!! she even does iced tea in hers!!! its pretty cool.
I have a Tassimo (similar, but less expensive with less coffee/cup options) and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I keep it at my shop and literally think about what coffee I'm going to make as I drive into work.
Yeah, it's that bad.
I find that my Mom's Keurig is one of the best reasons to drive 9 hours to visit her. It's amazing and we love it so much that we put it on our registry. We like the mix boxes of K-cups and the filter that we can fill with what we want.
I am curious....What is this Keurig machine, and what is so great about it? I LOVE COFFEE. A LOT! So if I am missing out on something fantastic here, I need to know!
Do you have to buy "keurig" coffee? Do you have to buy special teas ect?
@Candace From BC: It's a coffee maker that is set up to make small batches of tea, coffee and hot chocolate-think like one or two cup servings. There are special cups called K-Cups that you buy, typically in boxes bulk and they make one or two servings. We like it because we all drink different kind of coffees and different strengths, so it's conveneint because everyone gets something they like.
Ditto. The cups can get expensive unless you find a really good deal. This is the main reason I gave away the one I had. I absolutely love it because all you have to do is put the cup in and press a button when you are so groggy in the am. But, if you are not much of a coffee drinker, you could get one for teas, or hot chocolate, but I don't think you would get a ton of use out of it.
Anyway, I am pretty economical and and working on budgeting, so I said no to keurig even though it is awesome.
@JessicaVictoria814 Road tar... that's hilarious!!! My ex in-laws use to make that black thick tar stuff they called coffee. My ex FIL would tell people "It'll put hair on yer chest". Like that's what I need '_'
I love our Keurig! It works perfectly for us because my fiance doesn't drink coffee so it doesn't make sense to make a big pot when I don't drink more than 1 cup per day.
I absolutely LOVE our Keurig. At first I wanted nothing to do with it, it was a $130 coffee maker! But FI got a bonus at work and decided he wanted one, so he bought it. And I am soooo glad he did! I have a cup of coffee every day, sometimes I'll make tea (but w/ tea bag and hot water) or hot cocoa (sometimes I use the k-cups, sometimes I dump the little packs inside) it's just amazing. I've even used it for the hot water for oatmeal before, it's just so easy to use.
FI wants to put another one on the registry so he can bring one to work, but I veto'd that because it wasn't for 'us' LOL ;-)
I love mine. If you're going to use it for decaf, tea and other specialty drinks it's worth it. I personally love the Iced Tea.
FI bought me one for my birthday, and I LOVE it. He's a non-coffee drinker, and I always had a hard time figuring out how much coffee to brew for just one travel cup, and I always ended up dumping some. He also really likes the hot apple cider, and hot chocolate. We use it all the time. We did buy the refillable K-filter, so we can use our own coffee and not have to buy all the expensive K-cups, and it creates much less waste!
I love mine! I only drink a cup, MAYBE two when I get a coffee craving, and FI doesn't like coffee, so this works perfectly for me because I would never drink an entire pot of coffee. I agree that the K-Cups can be expensive, but I find them on sale at Bed Beth & Beyond all the time, and I don't go through them fast enough to be buying them all the time. But they usually have their holiday flavors on sale for half off after Christmas! :]
@Lindsay12.31.2010: Agree!! We use the filter and fill it with our own grinds to save on K-cups, but the K-cups are still way cheaper than going to a coffee shop on the way in to work etc.
We've had ours for over a week and love it, use it every morning. If I get a hold of some spreadsheet comparing all the K-Cup brands and flavors I'll post it here.
I just used it this morning for the hot water to make oatmeal.. worked very well :)
The only problems I've had with it:
1. It's easy to forget to take the K-cup or used grinds out because I'm not used to making coffee..DUH.
2. Finding a to-go mug that fits in the machine that I like ;)
3. Nothing really..it's just me.
I love my sister's Keurig, and we've registered for two (lake and home). I can't do caffine very much either (upset tummy) but I love it for half-caf brews, cafe-mocha (sorta coffee/hotchocolate) and the ciders and teas. I think it's so handy, only takes about a minute and a half and I'm good to go, and there's such a large variety that any guest will find something they like. I totally recommend one!
@Lindsay12.31.2010: I like the hot chocolate.
My sister really likes the iced tea/lemonaid one. But what sold me is the chai tea. I have never found one I could make at home that was yummy. This was it!
Bath , Bath, and Beyond has the largest selection of k-cups. I wait until I get a 20% off coupon in the mail and stock up.
My SIL has one (we're staying with her at the moment). At first I was kind of meh about it. It's super convenient for just one or two cups, but between me, DH and SIL, it was easier just to make a pot of coffee.
I'm loving it more since I got pregnant, though, because I've cut down my coffee to almost none. I think I had one cup on Saturday morning, and that was the first one I'd had in days. So now it's just DH and SIL, and they leave for work at different times. I'm up with SIL and my nieces making breakfast, and it's really easy to make SIL a to-go cup with the Keurig, and later making one for DH. Sometimes I use the cups, but usually I grind my own coffee beans and use the K cup filter. It's a lot more economical that way, and I prefer my coffee beans (as do DH and SIL). DH bought me a pack of tea K-cups, and lately I've been making myself an afternoon cup of tea.
We'll keep making full pots on the weekends, when everyone is home and drinking more coffee, but during the work week the Keurig is really convenient.
ETA: SIL buys an 80-pack of K-cups from Costco for like $36. I don't think there's a large variety of flavors, though.
We drink a huge pot of coffee in the morning before work, so for us it doesnt really make sense. I love waking up to a fresh pot of coffee :)
We do have one at the office though and I like it.
I LOVE MINE!! I usually only drink one, maybe two, cups of coffee a day. It's perfect for when I wake up in the morning, turn it on with the push of a button and by the time I'm done with my morning business it's ready to go. I especially love that it was a gift (graduation present from my folks) because they are kind of expensive for a coffee maker.
I agree, order the K-Cups online. I get mine on Amazon and it's much cheaper. My parents have a mini Keurig that is for traveling, and they also have the normal sized one in their house. My sister hates coffee but still wants a Keurig anyways (weirdo)
We just got one a few weeks ago. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but my husband uses it everyday. He loves it. I do think the k-cups are expensive, but he uses the filter and uses regular coffee for it.
I recently got mine as a shower gift.
I registered for it on the premise that I'm the only coffee drinker in the house, thus it will be economical and easy for me (making 1 precise single serving per day rather than brewing too many cups that end up going to waste).
The problem is it's so easy and fun to use that now I'm drinking MORE coffee. Like, a lot more than usual. So it's not so economical anymore (the k cups are pretty expensive when compared to a single regularly brewed cup of coffee).
We bought one for Christmas...so far, love it. DH and I have very different tastes, and we're looking forward to using it when we have company over. SIL bought me a refillable K-cup, so I'll probably use that quite a bit.
Mr. Mink's mother bought me one for Christmas. I'm a little worried...my Capresso makes amazing coffee. I understand the convenience of the Keurig, but I love really good coffee!
FI and I decided against a Tassimo or Keurig because when I want a specialty coffee, I go out with friends and it's a treat. If I can have one everyday at home, it's not so special anymore. The fake milk etc.. upsets my stomach anyways so it wouldn't be worth buying the cups. He got me a Black and Decker maker instead that makes a max of 12 cups, but you can program it to brew only 4 cups at a time. I just got some really great decaf out of it :)
Okay, I've now brewed 3-4 cups between last night and this morning.
The coffee from the Keurig tastes stale and harsh to me. I have to imagine that others who grind their own beans are experiencing the same? I'm so frustrated...I don't want to offend Mr. Mink or his mother, but invested some money in a top-of-the-line burr grinder and did research before settling on my Capresso machine. I want to put the Keurig on Craigslist already.
Can any other coffee enthusiasts help me get better quality coffee out of this thing? Maybe I need to use the little basket with my own grinds...
@mink: The refillable K-cup might help. Bed, Bath, and Beyond has one for under $20. I'd loan you mine if you were closer! ;-)
Here are a few choices:
THanks!!! The My K Cup came with the machine I got...it had 48 cups in it and the DIY basket.
Using my fresh grinds was better...but it's not the same as using my Capresso maker. I wish I had trusted my gut and not even opened the box.
At least using your own grinds is a little greener than using the plastic cups.
